helix1405241470 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 I have the MS media keyboard where you have volume controls, calculator, etc buttons on it. This new version also has secondary controls for the function keys. That's fine by the function keys are ALWAYS off by default which is an annoyance for me. It only requires me to press one key to turn it on but if I forget to do that and start pressing buttons, all sorts of programs start running and bad things start happening. How can I make them ON by default (like I have Num Lock on by default)?
iGuest 3 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 NUMLOCK ON, on power up is handled by the BIOS. Because there are standard AT keyboard commands to turn on and off Numlock, Caplock and ScrollLock LEDs. While Microsoft's F lock is MS proprierity key with no standard AT keyboard command. I myselft have the same keyboard and have the same problem.
helix1405241470 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 You would think that MS's driver would give you that capability. But then again, I'm not surprised. I had an older version of that keyboard with the sleep button on the right corner. My computer will not recover from sleep so that was basically a deathwish to press it. Their driver allowed me to customize all buttons EXCEPT for the sleep button. Why in the world would they overlook something like that? I tried to solve matters myself at 3am once after my cat stepped on the button and lost a few hours of work by drilling out the button. I had to buy a new keyboard after that haha. Although my computer does recovers fine from sleep, But its just my kid who loves to press that button (to get my attention) . I would like that button to be programable. iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Short cut keys on toshiba laptop stuck "on"Microsoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default? My 2 yr old grandson had a field-day with my Toshiba laptop today and I cannot get it back to normal. I believe he pressed just the right combination of keys to turn-on the short cut options on keyboard. Whenever I open a web browser, I cannot type in the address bar. I believe it the short-cut keys are in stuck in "on" mode. If I go to press letter "o" then things open. if I press "p" then printer menu appears, etc. I also opened Note Pad just to see if I could type any letters or numbers and I could not. How do I fix this? How do I disable this so key board is back to normal. I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Intel Pentium 4and operating system is Windows XP. Please, please, if anyone knows how to help me undo this, I would surely appreciate it. P.S. I haven't turned off the laptop b'cause I am afraid of what will happen when I try to power back up. thanks-question by Puzzled Granny
iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 21, 2009 Toshiba key mapMicrosoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default?I recommend you look at the last function keys. F10 F11 or F12. They typically activate your 'number' pad for use. You'll need to depress the Fn key along with one of these other keys to activate or deactivate the combo; otherwise, ensure that no keys are stuck. While this doesn't usually happen I guess anything is possible.
iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 How do you turn the F key functions off?Microsoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default?Ok I am an avid gamer on my laptop but its a Dell Inspiron 1525 and all the F keys are used for different functions. Like F1 is for external displays, F2 is for WI FI, F3 is for battery and so on and so on. But I need some of these keys for gaming but when I press them it takes me out of the game to whatever F function I have brought up how do you disable those functions? I am running 64 bit vista and I would please like a reply. Thanks Derick-reply by Derick

iGuest 3 Report post Posted November 20, 2009 Ever figure this out?Microsoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default?Derik- Ever figure this out? These volume, contrast, and playback controls have taken over my F-keys and now I can't do things like F2/Rename with a single finger. If you found out how to do this, let me know, would you? iGuest 3 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 the solutionMicrosoft media keyboard -- F keys on by default?Go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and follow the instructions to get the function keys to work as they should at boot, without the F Lock nonsense. It worked for my Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard. Good bye and good riddance to the F Lock key! Cheers.-reply by Bungee
