Hurricane Issac - A Strike 7 Years After Katrina

Recommended Posts

This tuesday witnessed a second devastating hurricane attack after katrina. This huricane attack will actually be testing how foolproof were the flood defences already built. Although not as powerful as that of Katrina but Issac accompanied along with it a 80 mph or 120 kph winds following a heavy rainfall that is expected to flood the entire area. Katrina attack was considered as the costliest natural disaster that took in its lap the lives of nearly 1800 people. The Issac attack marking the 7 anniversaryof Katrina will be an acid test to prove how tight the disaster management system is working out there.Various preventive measures like walls, floodgates, levees and pumps built using $14.5 billion has already been implemented. The massive new floodgate at Lake Borgne which is the world's largest storm surge barrier has already been closed. The lower 9th ward of most of the cities scarred by Katrina memories has already been evacuted. This huricane is not only putting a halt in the lives of common mass but also shuttering the oil production at the US Gulf of Mexico.

I certainly hope all the new measures worked like they were supposed to. Katrina was such a horrible disaster, surely we can learn from past mistakes. Of course, when you live in an area that is actually below sea level, it shouldn't come as such a surprise when something like this hits. There has been very little news coverage about Issac, quick blurps about the number of people that are without electric power is about all I've seen. Seems the media is too busy covering political campaignes and conventions. Which quite frankly, I'm getting rather sick of. Another jump in the price of gasoline though, effects everyone, not just those actually facing the storm. We sure didn't need any more financial challenges the way the economy is now.
