iGuest 3 Report post Posted August 9, 2012 Hi tawacom,You raised a really valid question and deserve a "+1" for that. Now coming back to the topic, when the business of web hosting is talked about , a lot of factors have to be discussed about as well. One of the prime reasons that you may be charged for the hosting services is the Quality of the hosting that they offer, if the hosting provided is really good then why not pay for it, next in line would be the management and the maintenance of the hosting services that might make you pay a price, the managing the server and maintenance of good quality requires a good amount of effort, like having backups for electricity and the data that is stored, the cooling process, and really sound amount of effort has to be put in cases of emergency that could be due to natural or any other factors. Also when the hosting company provides you with the best in hardware and software, then it is fair on their part to charge some fair bugs for that.It is absolutely possible to set up server systems at your home and that would be known as a home server, but there are some steps that need to be taken if you want real hosting from your home server. Moreover, the user computers are created and designed to be generic machines, not for being used as a web server. You may have to monitor the server constantly, and take efforts to look after the cooling processes, the backups and every other thing that is essential for a server to work. In addition you would also have to pay a good amount for getting your personal computer adapted into a web server. The selling price of a hosting service is mostly dependent on the policy of the company that is providing the services, and the company has to be chosen wisely as all of them are not equally honest, another factor that can make the prices vary is the requirement of strength in hosting, i.e., what capacity of hosting you are looking for. After all when a company puts in so much of effort to carry out the functions of something it does not own, they can be allowed to charge fairly as well.
