Back Up And Restore In Linux back up and restore in linux

I have been given a task to restore and back up files but the user has to chose whether they want to back up or restore a file and there are 3 types of file text, excel and picture. I don't have a clue how to start it or how to go about doing it?any help would be much appreciated
