Add-on / Parked / Subdomains?

Recommended Posts

what's the difference between Add-on / Parked / Subdomains? :P

Is parked just where the website isn't being made yet and subdomain is with the subdomainurl.mainsite.extension

Add-on domains are where i'm confused

I tried adding http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ to my domain but it says they got added as add-on domains but the urls are gnarfard.metaknight.com, vitachoconutriment.metaknight.com and ekaiyo.metaknight.com...

Are the subdomains the same thing as the regular URL domain??

So if I went to my cPanel where would I go to edit http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ seperately from http://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=metaknight&e=com because that's where i'm stuck :P

Do I go to file manager -> public_html or www -> then to ekaiyo folder?

in ekaiyo folder there's a file called .ftpquota is that where I set bandwidth limits on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/? And I made index.html in the ekaiyo folder that's where I do it, right?

Hold on, I tried to make a file in public html -> ekaiyo but it doesn't work.

I headed to www folder -> ekaiyo -> create file -> index.html

But instead of saying http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ the URL is http://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=metaknight&e=com???

YES IT WORKS! ekaiyo.com is up in action

How come ekaiyo.com is up and running but http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ takes me to a parked page by namecheap?? D:

That posting is a bit confusing. Can you describe the situation as it is, again, please, for clarification.

To answer this part:

what's the difference between Add-on / Parked / Subdomains?

Parked Domains are attached to your Hosting Account main public_html folder. You then have the option of browsing to your main account using the parked domain name or the Hosting sub-domain name.
Example: parkedDomain.com shows the files as if you had used subDomain.trap17.com
Parked Domains are only there to allow users to find you using the different domain names.

Add-on Domains are a folder under your public_html. They hav their own ftp accounts and the way to get to them is by using the folder.trap17.com. Add-on Domains exist inside their own folder, which will be created for each Add-on Domain you create.

Another difference is that Parked Domains retain the Domain name in the user's address bar if you use relative addressing in your links. Add-on Domains change the Domain name to read as per the folder.domain.com, I think.

The difference between an add on domain and parked domain is that when you add on another domain your basically doing a redirect to the original site with more then one domain. As with a parked domain your changing your old domain or in this case a sub domain into a full top level domain, and it usually is permanent.

As for the add-on domain problem don't fill out the username/sub domain folder text box and then set up them up to redirect once the domain has been accepted. However, if it creates the add-on domain like that automatically then I believe you have to do a redirect on the domains admin panel as well, but not to sure on that.

All sub-domains are is a folder within the main domain and so in order to connect to them you just type out the sub domain.TLD. and com or .net or .org.

As for editing your sub-domain you just go into your file manager and then locate the folder within the public_html folder and then edit from there. FTPquota is use to limit how much a person can upload through an FTP, but could be used to limit bandwidth to an extent, but to limit bw you would have to set up a htaccess file I believe, but again not to sure how to limit bw usage through a sub-domain hosting account.

And yes you would create an index file in that folder as well/

You can add additional domains to your account using either :-

1. Addon Domain

2. Parked domain

Option in Cpanel. Both work differently and are used depending on the requirement of the user. I will try my best to explain the difference and implementation of the two :-)

Parked Domain

===========

1. You have two domains mysite.com and my-other-site.com. mysite.com is the domain of your website and you want to add my-other-site.com.

2. You want them both to go to the same place. In other words, when someone types either http://www.mysite.com/ or http://my-other-site.com/ they will go to the same page(s) on your website.

3. In order to have additional parked domains you need to point those domains to OUR nameservers (ns.computinghost.com and ns2.computinghost.com)

4. In Cpanel, Go to PARKED DOMAINS. And enter your domain name and press submit:)

Add-On Domains

============

1. You have two domains mysite.com and my-other-site.com.

2. You want the two domains to be totally separate/independent websites.

3. In order to have additional addon domains you need to point those domains to OUR nameservers (ns.computinghost.com and ns2.computinghost.com)

4. In Cpanel, Go to addon DOMAINS. And enter your domain name and press Submit:)

5. A Folder will be created and you will have to place the files of that site in that Folder.
