What Is Cms? i need a more detailed description

Ye, i know that it is 'content management system' but my question would be:1) it must be installed on the server i upload my site to or it just generates the site i will upload myself to my host?2)what is the best open-source cms (in terms of friendly to non-technical guys, easy to change the design and as well easy to create my own theme and rearange the modules inside- news, pools, etc)for now that's it all.10x.

A typical CMS resided on your server and offers a fill in the blanks way of creating and managing your site.I don't use CMSs so I can't help you in choosing one, but there are a few in the cpanel for Xisto, so my advice would be to just try them.

10x, wondering if cms means for a normal site or portal what wordpress&co means for blogs...I mean if i want a blog i use some bloging system because it's optimised for writing/posts, if i want a portal i use a cms, if i want an image gallery use one. Does this work like yhis? -of course assuming i don't want to hard-code all that site, just a few adjustments...

I am actually starting a process in a search of a content management system. I really dont know too much about them but visit this site: http://www.opensourcecms.com/ This site has a listing of several content management systems and also allows you to demo them a little bit. They also have ratings for the systems. Thats really all the advice I can give, as I am really unfamiliar with them. Good luck

thank you for the advice, i've already went through that site and even tried a few of the cms' but as i am tottaly unfamiliar to cms' i don't know what to look for and what to evaluate. At most i could evaluate them by the look and feel of the sites being developed around them. And thus i liked mambo/ joomla, but i just don't know if i'd do for me more than wordpress for example would.

Heres what you should look for in a cms:Features - make sure it has the ones you wantHtml/Coding - Make sure it doesn't make you do more than you want with html or codingSupport - It needs to have good support or you are pretty much on your ownUser-friendly - Should be user friendly tooWould have edited that post but it won't let me so:Make sure its compatible with your hosting company (like it doesn't use the wrong type of scripting or anything and make sure that it's supported by your host) otherwise you might run into a few problems also read reviews that users of the cms you want have written and some tutorials before getting it if you do all of that you shouldn't have much problem with it once you decide on oneok that was strange but i just noticed something else that might helpfind out all the info about it that you can ... well anyway if that doesn't help ne ask a specific question i know enough about them (been using different cms stuff for 4 years) that i should have an answer but heres a warning i mostly use online ones (the ones that you use online then it tells u some info and you can make an html code from it)

Pk, here it goes what i want do get: -easy to change the overall design -very flexible templates- -able of setting up a photo gallery; -able to set up a blog based on text mostly; -able to get a log-in system; -eventually gat a shopping cart to work easily.Guess but the final one i could use wordpress and plug-ins as it-s fast and looks good.So i'll wait for your answers:)Thanks

Yea for what you want from it wordpress does sound like it would work for you.

Here are a few content management systems that I might recommend:

Opencms
Verge
Drupal
Typo3

Those seem to be pretty good and I did read some reviews of them.

Wow.. I forgot about this, I thought it was "Console Management System" also some of these cms are PHPNuke, Mambo, e107 .. which one do you think is the best?

ok,i guess i'll stick with Joomla. It looks fantastic to me and the sites i've seen made with it just liked. What do u think of it and are there any tutorials of how to build a simple site from scratch? -I'm so afraid to tackle smth like this as i'm not a programmer, just a little designer -

I tried out the demo site for Joomla, and it looks really organized. Plus it has features aplenty. If you're thinking of putting up a big site, this is a good one. On the other hand, if you're aiming more like a blog/small personal site, then either Nucleus or WordPress will do nicely.

9. Search results for "Joomla Tutorial" in: MSN Ask Jeeves/ Google/ Yahoo/ LookSmart (on the search engine i used it does those 4 in one just click on name of search engine for other results)

Those aren't in any particular order but they all have information about Joomla that could be useful to you. I couldn't find any tutorials for joomla that specifically said they were for building a site whether it was from scratch or not. Sorry.

Oh yeah key words : might and could... I don't know if you would think those are useful but they have alot of information and stuff. Sorry if none of it has anything of use. Good luck with finding a good tutorial. All that was only 88 minutes worth of research anyway.

Thanks man for that time u took. I really don't have all that time and furthermore that's why i love forums there are many other possible wise-enough guys to give u a hand without reinventing the weel as long as they already know the answers. Also when i know anything asked here i try to help cause it takes less to give an answer than doing research on a tottaly new topic, which i would if i only had time enough. Thanks again and keep up, u're doing great. I'd like forums have more people like yourself.
