Linux? Trademark?

Recommended Posts

What's going on here? It seems that Linus Torvalds (the creator of Linux) realised that he can make some cash with his creation - actually, it's NAME! Linux is now a registered trademark, and you must pay  in order to use it in your distribution name!

The registered trademark Linuxďż˝ is used pursuant to a license from Linus Torvalds, owner of the mark in the U.S. and other countries.

As stated in our articles of incorporation, The Linux Mark Institute ("LMI") is an organization established "to protect the public and Linuxďż˝ users of the world from unauthorized and confusing use of the Linux mark and to issue proper licenses to authorized users of the Linux mark."  LMI is not designed to generate profits for anyone, which is why Linus Torvalds has given LMI primary sub-license rights for the mark. We work to protect legitimate uses of the LINUX trademark without burdening Linus Torvalds or any one entity with the financial responsibility of protecting the LINUX community's use of the mark.

If you are panicing, don't! Linux is still free, but it's name isn't! I think that that's not such a big problem, is it? SUSE linux will simply be called e.g. "SUSE", RedHat Linux will simply be called e.g. "RedHat OS"... Remember: This does not affect Linux users in any way! However, it's a bit confusing to see that Linus Torvalds decided to take this step...

well i think its good that Linus Torvalds has taken this step...because one can imagine the hardwork he had put in to make the linux and his greatness to keep it open source...and if he asking some share of that from the corporates then its fine!!!at least END USER is not getting effected with that!

Have you people no knowledge of history?

Here goes, you can use your favorite search engine to fill in the blanks, names, dates, etc to your heart's content.

Linus Torvolds did not take this step. He came up with the name, built the initial community, got the whole thing going, but failed to copywrite the name Linux. Some slimeball in the US did, and the powers that be allowed him to. This guy was never part of the community, contributed nothing, and when he felt the time was right, started to try to cash in by threatening various distributions, demanding $$$$$ from them because he "owned" the name, at least according to the US government. His ploy never made him any money. The community got together and threatened legal action (mail fraud, etc) against both said slimeball & lawyer. He was given the option of making all the legal problems just go away by simply relinquishing his claim. Seems he was a bit hard to get ahold of for a while, eventually caving and the name was yet again free.
