whois ip address

Hi, how can i whois an ip address?

I want to get an idea of who is visiting my site, which at the moment just records as an IP address, but i want to know how i can change an ip address into a whois address so that it is more readable.

My pages are in php.

I want something that does the same as the functions here:
http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ though i dont need the form input, as the IP's ill use are in the table.
