Most people would use Photoshop. Some use Paint Shop Pro.

It really depends on what gfx app you feel most comfortable with.I just to use Jasc's Paint Shop Pro and swore by itbut not I use Adobe's Pgotoshop and love it more hehehe

i'm in the same ship as Amras, i swore by Paint Shop Pro, until i started to get a feel for Photoshop. No turning back

In my opinion, Photoshop is by far the best software for graphics. I havent experimented with many others though. Photoshop can be tricky to use since its such a powerfull program, but once you get the hang of it there is no limit to what you can do. Some good tutorials can be found here http://www.good-tutorials.com/ ,,it has tuts for all level users of photoshop.

I use The Gimp, its free but I don't think it is as powerful as PhotoShop

You could get it free if your university had it and you said you need to take it home to use for some work. lol it may work

photoshop is one of the best, fireworks is also good, so is paintshop, and for making gif's, i use adobe imageready, then a program i made in visual basic, to optimize it and make it smaller
