I've only used Windows Media Player and VLC so far... On my Win XP I use WMP but in my Ubuntu partition I use VLC... I'm the kind of person who thinks that media players are the same. As long as it plays the CD/ DVD, any media player will do. haha.

try using GCC. (GNU Compiler Collection). I believe this is the best C/C++ compiler available since the entire open source world uses and develop this compiler. GCC is ANSI/ISO compliant so you are sure that it recognizes standard stuff like string, etc... When compiling C++ source code from the command line using GCC type: g++ fileName.cpp -o outputName Note that you should be in the same directory as the source code when executing this. If you're compiling C progs, replace 'g++' with 'gcc' Hope this helps.

You can answer easy ACM- ICPC problems at uva.onlinejudge.org . The site provides all kinds of programming exercises from newbie to professional levels. Just create an account -> pick a problem -> write & submit your source code -> if the judge accepts then GOOD, else repeat step 3. Also, Google is free... you should squeeze the most out it.

I find C/C++ annoying too especially when time is premium (eg ACM-ICPC). I spend a considerable amount of time deciphering its compilation/ error messages. (Back then, I thought they were alien language). However after building your program, the headache pays off because of C/C++'s efficiency. Unlike Java, w/c is easy to code but lots of overhead at runtime. Just like time-space, there is always a tradeoff.
