  1. My computer iz Pentium IV, with 2,4 GH power, with 80 Gb memory and DVD writer. Is it good or little? My internet operater have cabal internet line, and I am so satisfive (Is godd that word?). Please, if something to tell me what can I doing with my computer the best. Now I wach movies, listen sam music, write letter, make a site personal....

    Hi, ljiljana
I was used to own a Pentium 4 2.4GHz PC, and it was fairly good. ;)

Your "80 Gb memory" should be 80GB Hard disk instead, and the memory size of your computer is one of the critical measurement for us to judge your computer performance. You may see it from Control Panel->System Properties at Windows 2000 or newer.

In my opinion, your PC is acceptable to view modern websites, especially heavy multimedia-driven ones, and its speed will be acceptable if you are using Windows XP or Windows 7, and never open more than 5 applications at the same time, never more than 10 when counting icons at notification area (lower right hand corner of the bar below your desktop.

  2. If you really run Vista with Aero ONLY, and do not running another monster software like MS Office, I found it runs fairly smooth at Intel Core Duo T2050 (1.6GHz) and 1GB RAM.

In addition, a standard 32-bit (XP/Vista) PC supports 4GB RAM in spec, about 3GB RAM in practice, and may support 4GB RAM when PAE is enabled (but actually not in 32-bit Vista). Geoff Chappell stated that 32bit Vista would fully support 4GB RAM after modding the OS kernel. (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, but I and the author are NOT responsible for ANY POTENTIAL DAMAGE caused if you dare to do so).

On other hand, 64bit Windows supports up to 8GB (Vista Home Basic) to 128GB (Vista Business/Enterpise/Ultimate) installed RAM.

  3. I'm a linux fan too but I'm not very impressed with the range of games offered on Linux. They're good but not enough to quench my thirst for quality gaming ;) that's why I use Windows along with Linux in order to play the latest games.
But I also use Wine with Linux and it runs some of my favourite games such as Unreal Tournament without any bother. So the experience isn't all that bad under Linux. It just needs to improve, that's all.

Right, Wine (and its offsprings) has done a good job to emulate Win32 APIs, including the "close-standard" DirectX APIs. In addition, it will be great if display chip vendor put more efforts on the Linux driver of their products. :P

  4. I have a forum and content management system which both use the same database. A module on my forum runs an automated task to backup this database to my email address and also in a directory locally.
A couple of weeks ago I stopped getting backup emails, and when i run the ask manually I get the following error:

I need to get this working again reasonably quickly as I dont want to have to lose weeks of posts, members and content because my backing-up system isnt working. I've had to restore the database before, and luckily I had the days before backup.

Is this something to do with .htaccess? Can I "increase" my allowed memory size? What can I do here?

    Thanks in advance.

Do you run your stuff on a web hosting service or on a server?

If you are able to modify PHP settings, which is prohibited or limited on most web hosting service, seek a line like "memory_limit = 16M" to the desired size. Do not forget to reload the HTTP service if you own the server.

  5. In my opinion, you should consider using Windows hosting if you want to host .NET web projects/applications/services and/or use MS SQL as the backend, and it guarantees greatest compatibility. Otherwise you are recommended to use Linux hosting. In general, for paid hosting, Linux-based hosting is usually cheaper than Windows-based one.

  6. Well, Simpleton have given some good points. However, in practice, antivirus programs may not able to kill those scums when they are executed. One of the possible way is using any antivirus software which supports scan drives before initalizing Windows GUI. I know Avast! can do this. The point to stop harmful things in removable devices to be executed automatically is to disable AutoPlay for removable devices. You may use system tweaking tools like MS Power Toys, TweakVista to do so. After that, do not forget to scan the devices by any updated AntiVirus program.

  7. For me, qov.tw, which is also powered by byethost, is better than almost free web hosting services. Fairly low latency, and support most PHP functions. But I have something to say. Absence of socket and cURL functions support makes me uncomfortable; its database capacity is limited to 50mb; and its VistaPanel always halts my IE8. So I want to try Xisto.

  8. Although 000webhost provides a lot of features including 1500 MB disk space and 100 GB bandwidth but, still it is not a good host. Well I am saying this because I tried to join them three times using my two gmail ids
and one yahoo id but never succeeded.
Each time when I try to login in their members area they say our administrator will set
up this account within 24 hours and I signed up there about two weeks ago.
So now you can imagine what kind of webhost it is.

I tried to register 000webhost for testing, but I found I am unable to complete its IP activation even I have tried different PCs.
I managed to complete its registration via a web proxy.

Each time I logged in 000, she just says "your account will be activated within 24 hours", but I have waited for at least 7 times of 24 hours. (Yeah, activate by their admin, not mine)

Therefore I gave up this web hosting service.

  9. HI there Alex!
Wow Hong Kong is a very interesting country - it's one of my dream holiday spots :P So you made it to Xisto - congrats! Now all you have to do is to make some good posts which are also meaningful at the same time, and you'll be awarded virtual money for the effort. You can exchange this virtual money for buying domains/hosting which are really awesome packages.

You'll find a lot of friendly members down the forum so I'm sure you'll have no problem fitting in. Should you have any query you can open a thread in the relevant section and someone will get to it soon. This document should help you get started. so see you around soon :P

Ya, Hong Kong is a good place for tour, drinks, and snacks. ;)

  10. Hi Alex!
How are you doing? Welcome to Trap 17!!!

You'll find a lot of people here with interests that match yours. I spend quite a bit of time programming and, in fact, even do some programming for a living. I like cycling too, but had to give it up as it is illegal in this part of the world. I spend quite a bit of time doing some reading though it's mostly work related. I surf the 'net occasionally, often hoping to find something new in technological development or just something fun and amusing.

I'm guessing you are here for the free web hosting. The free web hosting is earned by posting to the forums and accumulating credits. To be able to determine how many credits you have and to be able to use them for ordering web hosting packages, you have to sign up on the Xistro Support and Billing website with the same email address and password that you have used to sign up on the Trap 17 forums.

If you have any questions, feel free to post to the forums.

Anyway, you have a good day.

You are right, I come here to test the pay-by-post web hosting. But I don't understand why you say cycling is "illegal" in the part of the world. Do you mean you are too busy to cycle?

  11. Hello everyone,

I have a laptop on which Windows XP was installed over here in Germany (German license, German program). Now I installed my (bought in America-) Guild Wars game on it, connected to the offered server to finish the installation and found that my Guild Wars game 'speaks' German to me now (for example, where it should say 'log in', it says 'einloggen', where the game prompt for me to use would be 'talk', it says 'sprechen' etc. etc.). I contacted support and after a long few emails going back and forth, the reply for fixing this issue was The only way to correct this is to set the Windows Default Language to English U.S.

Now .. I would LOVE for my whole interface (desktop, start menu, program folders etc. etc.) to be English rather than German (I just didn't pay attention when I had someone 'downgrade' my laptop from Vista to XP and they legally acquired a used German license rather than an American one - meh). So .. is there a way to set my whole computer to English, thus fixing not only my annoyance with my start menu, desktop labeling etc. but also, in one sweep, apparently fixing my Guild Wars problem?

I am a big time scaredy cat when it comes to altering anything in my computer's settings so .. a very detailed, complete run-down would be highly appreciated, folks - otherwise I know I'll mess it up ;)

Thanks already for everyones' help and effort,

    silky cat

You may solve the problem in two ways:

    1. Enter Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Advanced (the third tab)

    2. Choose "English" from the drop-down list of "non-Unicode Language" panel

    3. Restart your computer and verify by your Guild war

The alternative way takes advantages of an tool called AppLoc.

    1. Download Microsoft AppLoc install package from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download

    2. Install, and open it from Start Menu -> Microsoft AppLoc-> AppLoc

    3. In the AppLoc wizard, choose your Guild War launcher program as the executable, English as the desired language.

    4. (OPTIONAL) Still, you may choose creating an shortcut at the final step of the wizard for furthur usage.

    5. The launcher program is usually be executed after the wizard. Check if your guild war speaks English.

    I hope my methods help.

  12. Please Help... USB Flash Problem

Virus On Your Flash Disk? (usb Devices)

I have this USB flash that every time I connect it in my Computer (OS-Vista Starter Ed), it said the Drive is installed and ready to use.

I already tried all possible solutions like downloading recovery softwares for flash drives, also, changed my Folder Options, but none has helped.

It still said that the USB Flash is not formatted. Yet every time I tried to format it, the computer said It cannot be formatted.

Please help. I badly need my files in this flash. =)

    Thank you very much.

    -question by chyngky

I have not used Vista Starter edition yet, but I believe SpiderVV's point.

First, you may insert your thumb drive to another PC.

If the drive is still reported as unformated, you may try using some data recovery programs like Recover Data (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/).

    Hope it works.
