That is comforting since I am not too familiar with laptop 2.5inch drive tech. I know for 3.5drives, a large capacity 7200rpm for everyday usage feels virtually the same as a raptor or other 10k enterprise level drive. When I had the twin 36.4GB raptors, it felt just as speedy as my 200GB WD drive but with 1/3 the space and 2x the cost. The main advantage with stuff like the 10k raptors is since they are enterprise level, they come with a 5yr warranty, and the accompanying assumption that they are much more reliable. I doubt that same is true for 5.4k vs 72k notebook drives. Rather spend that extra $ on other useful stuff. It sounds like the 7.2k like you guys said is more for bragging rights for most people. Isn't it also true the 5.4ks also use less wattage? Thus extending the battery life a little bit?kservice

how much of a difference does a 7200rpm harddrive make compared with the 5400rpm ones in the laptops? I am wondering because I ordered a M170 with the free upgraded 100GB 5400. Couldn't justify paying $100 more for a smaller 60GB 7200. Last year, when I had my computer, I spent a ton of money upgrading my Western Digital Caviar SE 200GB 7200rpm harddrive to Raid 0 2 X 36GB raptors. Didn't feel that much of a difference, ended up selling the raptors again. kservice

I found om the web that The M70 is built to a far higher degree of durability and stability than the i9300. That's not to say that the i9300 is poorly built; it certainly isn't. However, the quality of the Precision line is far beyond what you will find in the Inspiron line. If your only concern is gaming, though, I would go with the i9300. It will get better performance, and it will cost far less than the M70. The Precisions are designed for workstation class CAD/3D work, so unless that type of usage is in your future, I think the M70 will be overkill. The only benefit to the M70 is that it has a smaller form factor (15.4" screen) and weighs a little less, while still offering a top of the line gpu. Hope this helps.kservice

I haven't seen enough Dell laptops to know for sure on the quality differences. In the desktop series, it usually has more to do with how the system is optimized. We had tons of troubles getting Dimensions to behave in a business network, but there's also no way an Optiplex could handle the games that a Dimension can. I've only ever worked on one Precision desktop, and it was so old by the time I got to it that I can't say a great deal about it. The Optiplex series is no less likely to fall over dead than a Dimension, so I don't see any real differences in the overall physical quality of the two separate lines. The Optiplex is definitely engineered more toward the "stability" end of the spectrum than the "performance" end.kservice

I am thinking about purchasing Thinkpad T41 (or a Dell D600). It's a great machine on paper (1.6GHz Pentium-M, 768MB RAM, 40GB 5400RPM HD). The only "problem" is that is has teh 32MB Radeon Mobility 9000, and I understand that unlike the 64MB version, the 32MB card only has a 64-bit memory bus. What I don't understand is what this means to me in terms of gmaing.First off, gaming is not a priority on this machine, since I plan on using it more for website development and such. But I would like to be able to play some games. I am not planning on playing any of the cutting edge stuff, like DOOM 3, Half-Life 2, Painkiller, etc...I have a powerful desktop for that.But I would like to be able to play Warcraft 3, SimCity4, Freedom Force, and Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations. I'd also like to be able to play these games at a decent framerate (25-30fps), and with details turned up for the most part.Will the 64-bit memory bus cripple the laptop that much? Or will the Mobility 9000 coupled with a good chunk of system RAM and a fast CPU make it so I cam play these games and enjoy them?Anybody else play games with a "crippled" 32MB Radeon Mobility 9000?Thanks in advance.kservice

BF2, HL2 etc...And I do want this laptop to last for a while... Is the ATI Mobility the card that came with your computer, or is it a replacement? If it came with your computer, I strongly suggest using the Dell provided drivers- Dell does a pretty good job of being sure their drivers work with their components. They also include a serial # tag on the case for you to use on their website to get a component listing with links to the drivers if you need an update.If it is a replacement, things can quickly get more complicated. You might want to let us know how you came across the card, and what's happened so far.Have you tried installing the drivers already? If so, were there problems, and if so to that, what were the error messages?Knowing that would greatly help us help you. Please let us know, and we'll do what we can for you.kservice

It IS partitioned and formatted - I did that on a Win2k box with USB2 ports.BUT - There is NO WAY for me to actually partition/format it on the USB 1.1 system because the DRIVE does not appear in Disk Manager (although it DOES appear in Device Manager)THAT'S the crux of the problem - PHYSICALLY, it seems to work - Windows is able to identify the drive (it gets the "Fujitsu MHT2030AT" id from the DISK itself) - which implies to me that it is actually capable of 'talking' to the disk itself.Logically, there's something stopping Windows from treating the disk as a disk - BUT, it does this WITHOUT issuing an ERROR or WARNING.kservice

I have a USB 2.0 'enclosure' for 2.5" HDD with a 30GB Fujitsu MHT2030AT HDD. When I plug it into a system with USB 1.1 ports only, although the Mass Storage Device and the Fujitsu MHT2030AT USB Device appears in Device Manager, there is no extra Disk added to Disk Manager (so I can't partition/format it). The same arrangement on the same PC running Linux works fine (though, as expected, it runs at USB 1.1 speed)I am running Windows XP (SP1+) with ALL of the latest patches.I have also tested this on 2 other XP (fully up to date) and 2 Win2k (also fully up to date) systems with USB 1.1 ports and found the same problem in all cases.I'm leaning towards blaming the Updated USB 2.0 Windows drivers at the moment.Microsoft 'Knowledge' Base is of no assistance. I am rapidly running out of ideas. Apparently, this unit has been tested and works on USB 1.1 systems, BUT I'm not sure if it has been tested on XP with ALL patches.Has anyone else experienced this sort of problem? what they are talking about is WEP key. There is not an easy way 'round this. It has been reported that a good schema of WEP implementation could take more than a lifetime of years to break with the current technology. Not saying that there is no work around....but you get the drift.I have all of my wireless access points here using WEP as well as MAC address authentication. So if the WEP key was compromised...then the MAC addy authentication will not allow any machine other than the ones in the MAC table to access the network anyway.The simple solution would be for you to "buddy" up to an IT person and have them give you the WEP key.....then you would be in like flynn!kservice

You won't have any downsides with going to a domain, other than the two facts that you have to make sure a DC is up always, and that migration is a b.*.t.*.h. Administration will be a lot easier (maybe).PC's will have separate IP's on the LAN. The DC will show the IP of each box. You can control the IPs directly or just let the DHCP service on the server control it for you. Outside of the LAN, you will see one IP, they will all show up as the same IP on the WAN (internet et al), but that will be the same whether it's a workgroup or a domain and is controlled by the router, not the type of configuration. The router to the WAN will be the outbound connection, so you shouldn't have trouble with your UNIX box as long as it's in the LAN. Unix actually works better with Windows than Windows does. Sounds stupid, but it's true.Again, if I were building a system of 130 users from the ground up, I'd go domain in a heartbeat. If I had a solid network of 130 users on a workgroup, and my administration headaches weren't too bad... I'd scratch my head and wait to see if the amount of administrative work warranted conversion. Your administation solutions will be easier with a domain if the number of user groups is small, but the conversion is going to be a b.i.t.c.h. Pay the piper in full now, or keep paying him over time.A good question to ask yourself is how many different user groups are you going to end up with. If you have 130 users that are all going to end up in just a handfull of groups, then it's a no brainer. Spend the weekend converting the system to a domain and then take a vacation. If you're going to end up with 130 users in 129 separate groups... Just leave it alone.kservice

You're already above the decision threshold with that many users. As I'm sure you're well aware, with 130 users, you have to manipulate every user's permissions individually in a workgroup environment. That can be tedious, however, converting all of those users to a domain environment is going to be a chore.With a domain, you'll have a magic wand that can sweep across the network and take care of everything with a couple of keystrokes... implementing changes in a domain can be done in five minutes whereas it might take days in a workgroup environment, however migrating can be a huge PITA.I normally recommend anything over 25 networked computers to go the domain route, but that is when building the network from the ground up. I've never tried to convert a 130 user system from a workgroup to a domain. Prepare for a weekend with little or no sleep.Setting up a PDC (primary domain controller) and SDC (secondary domain controller) is going to be the critical link. Those boxes will have to be fireproof, because without your domain controllers you have no connection between your users. In the workgroup atmosphere, if one box goes down, every other box can still communicate with each other. Without your DCs, your network is down.In the long run your work will be less in the domain environment... as long as you can keep the domain controllers up, your good.kservice

Hi all,I am relatively new to the wireless world, but not to the networking world.We have some major issues at work inregards to our wireless. We are going from XP to 98. Now the internet is on the XP system, but I cannot access it off the 98. I do know that the wireless is working because I can access all the shared folders on both units.Today I looked at the utility folder for the wireless and we are only operating at 48% for a signal. Would this have something to do with not being able to access the internet? Hello i had a similar problem, but i have more information, my wifi card is a DLINK G650, mi lapptop a ZE4145 a fresh installation of xp sp2, when i open internet explorer and surf a pair of minutes my system hang up.Fisrt i disabled the NIC card (when i use the wifi is useless for my)then i saw that the wi fi card is sharing the same IRQ with the sound card (IRQ 5), now i disabled it and i am testing if this solve the problem....If i not wrong the should'n be shared by two devices, but the xp said that there isn't conflicts.......Kservice
