  1. Thanks both for your input!

    I'll clarify some things...

Yes, i do realize that it is practically an exact copy of Stack Overflow (do to the system being used).

Correct. More exactly, it is based on the Stack Exchange platform, which is also the basis for Stack Overflow. We did, though, what customizations we thought were necessary. However, the platform is really good, so mainly we concentrate in getting it in the right direction - as our hardware topic is vastly different than the programming world.

Work a little bit on the colors, too. Consider more warmer colors, colors that contrast better with the background. Clicking on a "question" reveals that the question and the responses are in pink, a bright pink. I'm not against pink, but it's too bright to be with that background color (white) and it is slightly inconsistent following from the topic title.

The pink invasion was an April 1st joke ;) ... We had a message warning new users of it, you must have missed it.
Now we are back to our normal colors - you can check the site again, I think you'll find them rather pleasant.

If i wanted to help provide hardware information to others, what would i be interested in? Obviously the topics, but what about the topics? Wouldn't i be interested more in the ones that have the less responses (preferably 0 responses)?

Well, the questions with 0 answers do have that 0 in red - it should be more noticeable now, without the pink invasion.
Also, there is an "Unanswered" tab, where you can see all the unanswered questions.

What if i am someone who wants to ask a question? Why is "Ask Question" far off in the corner? And if i require to log in or register in order to ask a question, why not place the log in link next to "Ask Question"?

First of all, the beauty of the system is that you don't have to log in or register to ask or answer questions, you can post them as simply as you'd post comments on a blog.
Next, the button is deliberately far off in the corner. We'd want users first to get used with the system, see what kind of questions they can ask, and only then ask questions of their own.
Of course, this is a subjective topic. You could argue both ways. We talked about it and decided it was better for the site to have the button in a bit more subtle position.

And again, thanks a lot for the feedback.
Although I seem to dismiss most of it, we gather different opinions and then we do changes on the site - things that make sense for most of the guys that give us feedback.

  2. Hey!

You've probably seen a lot of discussion forums, some worse, some better.

I invite to take a look at my website: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Although I can't find a better way to quickly describe it than a "hardware forum", it's actually much more that a forum. And you'll feel this right after you see it. It's a very user-friendly system, based on questions and answers. The best answers get voted by other users, so you'll surely find the best answers always on top, when you are curious about a question. And the system has many other interesting aspects.

The underlying platform is a brand new one, developed two years ago, and already used on the biggest programming website.

I'm actually quite curious what do you think about this type of system. Do you like it better than the omnipresent phpBB forums?
Also, I'm curious if you like the design. I and my friends spent quite some time tweeking it.

  3. Today I mad a Patition for something [...]. I urge everyone in the USA to please sign this patition [...]. This Patition will end on 12/31/09

Ok, no offense intended, but it's petition.

  4. I think they are only do main countries that are not to big like China for one would be way to big to do.
Most tourist place's like: UK, US, France & some others :D

They may do one with all the countries on but I am sure you would have to pay for that.

No, most likely you won't have to pay for anything.

Also, Google is not the only one doing street-views.
There is a website http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ that has streetviews for major cities in Romania, and this company also does it for other central/eastern european countries ( Poland |Czech Republic |Slovakia |Austria |Russia).
    All for free, of course.

It's only a matter of time until we'll be able to see street views from every major road in the world.
And that's definetely a good thing. The 'against' reasons are kind of... (how sould I say this)... a bit dumb.

  5. Could it be that you mistyped a password. I spent typing raging at the WP devs until I realizedthat I typed the wrong password.

No, I tried at least 20 times, with exactly the same password that works in CPanel and FileZilla. I even wrote it once in clear text and then pasted it and it didn't work. The problem is not with the password.

Another reason could be that (although unlikely here) FTP may not be installed, or fsockopen disabled.

Yes, absolutely unlikely, as FileZilla works :D

Or, if WP doesn't display errors well, then it could be a permission error. CHMOD your plugins dir (probablyin wp-content dir) to 777.

I had already did the permission change to 777 for the wp_content dir. I even tried it now for the other folders related to Wordpress, still it didn't work.

My best bet is there is something wrong with Wordpress, a small glitch that in connection with it being hosted here on trap makes it impossible to use the automatically install plugins (and upgrades).

Has anybody here with a 2.7 Wordpress blog hosted on trap managed to use the automatic install?

If your still having problems your best bet is to do it the manually way by uploading the plugins into the folder and then activating them that way.

And yes, I already did this for a plugin. I just wish I could do it easier. And also I have a doubt with the upgrade to 2.7.1. If the automatic upgrade would work I would have no worry, but if I download the new files and replace the existing ones, I'm worried I might lose some of my WP settings, or my theme's settings (which are quite a lot).

  6. I installed Wordpress 2.7 on my site, hosted by Xisto, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Everything went ok and smooth, I installed a theme, some plugin (manually), but I saw that I can also install plugins automatically (from the Wordpress administration panel).

The problem I have when I try to do this is my Connection Information. I use the same credentials as I use with FileZilla to upload things to my website, but it doesn't seem to work.
So, maybe somebody here on trap has already did this and can point me to what I do wrong.

    The Connection Settings I use:

Hostname: riotingbits.creativeriots.com (I also tried with http and with no protocol)
Username: riotingb (the same as the one I log on to CPanel)
Password: ****** (the same as the one I log on to CPanel)
Connection Type: FTP (also tried FTPS)

I also attached a print-screen with the error.

    Any idea? Anyone?

  7. It's kind of funny how the votes are still very tight, 60 to 61 in this moment. And no wonder there are already 30 pages with comments to this topic, after all, this is a per-se religious debate (you know, that kind of debate that never ends and no-one can convince others of anything, as the basis of the discussion - if the beligerents believe in God or not - is already set and cannot be changed). Now, to put my opinion so I can be hated, I voted for Yes, the world would be better without a religion.I'm not going to talk to much, because I know I'd be wasting my breath on people who already have strong opinions about their faith. I think mostly coward people, and people who are very conformist and afraid to question their ancestors' decisions get to be religious. And a world without religion would be better in the first place because you wouldn't have religious fanatism, like muslim fanatism, but also like groups who fight against abortion and science researches in the West. You can kill me now :D

  8. :P And I'm going to teach you how to multiply in binary. It's actually pretty simple, if you know how to do it normally (in decimal) :DSo, in decimal it would be, let's say 105 * 23:--105 *----23_____--315210_____2415If you are used to that, in binary it's the same idea:----1011 *------101_______----10111011_______1101111011 is 8 + 2 + 1 = 11 in decimal.101 is 4 + 1 = 5 in decimal. Now, if we multiply in decimal, 11 * 5 = 55, which is exactly our result in binary, 110111.(I used the "-" signs to align the numbers right, as spaces aren't rendered correctly)

  9. We already have a topic with more than 1000 replies debating the best anti-virus.
Unfortunately, though, I think that tone of dicussions is pretty useless.

I mean, no-one will go now over 100 pages of talking to see different opinions from different people and decide what anti-virus they should get.
So I decided to create a poll. I've put here the most talked-about anti-viruses.
People will see which are the most popular and appreciated choices.

Of course, you're also free to discuss and argument your decision.
    VOTE OR DIE!

    Links to the choices:
    Avast
    AVG
    Avira
    BitDefender
    Kaspersky
    McAfee
    Nod32
    Norton AntiVirus

  10. I have the best protection for my computer, Windows Firewall :P I've never gotten any virus or spam-ware.

Well, you're either very lucky, either you don't extensively install programs, browse the internet or use programs from torrents :P
I use Avast. I find it small and good, and if you register on their website you can use it for free, get updates and so.
I tried most of the freeware antiviruses, and I found Avast to be the best.

  11. My favourite is mountain climbing.

It's a great sport, it uses all your muscles, and it's nice that you have goals (reach the top :P), and can try different tracks, more easy or more hard.

And you can also do it during the winter, in special halls, like this one that I'm going to from my home-town (it's called Natural High :P)

  12. GMail (Google Mail in UK and Germany) - GoogleŽ Webmail/POP/IMAP/Chat service - https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1

The only cons that I could find are:

Rich HTML formatting does not offer inline pics and HTML signatures. // fine for me because I hate HTML mails :P

Not offering unlimited space (like Y! Mail does)

E-mail attachments are limited to 20MBs per message

Weak IMAP implementation Full IMAP controls now available.

I can add a con for Gmail: It doesn't let you send .exe files as attachements in your email.

I couldn't believed it when I saw it. I got an error, something like "this is for security reasons, because executable files can be malicious". And finally I sent it with Yahoo, which doesn't have this stupid rule.

(ok, maybe I wasn't exactly no topic, but it might be a bit relevant for your comparison)

  13. Quite surprising. In November, when the service was launched, I saw a lot of people here on trap discussing and being excited about the Gmail themes. And also, I always had the impression that a lot of trapsters are using Gmail. But now it looks like the Themes aren't really used by the community (and it's a shame, because they are really nice and non-bloaty).So far we have:1. The "Desk" theme, used only by me (!?) - first attachement2. The "Mountains" theme, used by 2 people - second attachementAnything else? Anyone?

  14. I hate the concept of themes in Gmail , it will have a definitive adverse effect on the mail experience with the loading gettig more slower than the normal time taken nnow.

Actually, I think the themes were designed to have the minimum overload possible.

I don't see any problems with the one I'm using now, it's still a fast load.

I agree with you on products that trade speed for good looks, that sucks, but it's not the case here.

  15. GMail launched the custom Themes a few months ago.

It was a long-expected feature, as the Yahoo Mail interface looked nicer, and the GMail one just old and boring.

It was just a few weeks ago that I got to change my theme, and I can say that, since then, I simply enjoy logging into my GMail.

My theme is called 'Desk', and as you can see in the attached picture, it's quite nice :P

So.. What's your favourite GMail theme?

[for those who don't know, themes are under Settings -> Themes]

  16. A user logon and tracking script, which language to use?

    User Login And Tracking

I would like to learn a language for creating or using scripts to allow users to be able to logon to their own personal account to use my site and allow me to view the date/time of which links are clicked so I can keep track of which user joined which sponser so I can reward them for doing so. Is this possible?

    Thanks in advance :P

    -question by David Almond

    Hi, David!

It's been awhile since your post here, but maybe you still track it somehow and you'll see my piece of advice.

Since you posted in the .NET forums, I'm going to give you some ASP.net suggestions. The big idea is: yes, it is possible what you have in mind, and actually it's not so hard.

    1. For the user login, the easiest way to do it is by using a Login Control, like described here in the MSDN documentation: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178329.aspx

You don't need to write any code, you just add this control from the toolbar in Visual Studio to your website's masterpage, and it will automatically take care of your users' logon, authentication, etc.

    2. About seeing the date/time and what links your clients clicked, you will need a bit of code (C# in my suggestions, but you can use VB.net also). You can make all the links on your website to be at design time LinkButton controls, not simple links. LinkButtons look exactly as normal links to the end-user, but the beauty is that you can attach events to them, and make some code execute on those events.

In your example, you can use the OnClicked event. When the user clicks a link, you'll add code that sees who it is (you will find information on how to do it in the link I provided above), you can use the event arguments to see what link he clicked on, and finally you can get the date/time they clicked with DateTime.Now(). After you'll get these 3 pieces of information (all you wanted) you store them in a database, and then you can check there your users' activity.

If you need more details, or help with some part of this process, post here and I'll gladly help you.

  17. Hi! I'm working as a .NET developer, so I couldn't stay away from this discussion :P

Does anyone who uses ASP know what makes it better than PHP then? I'm just thinking if there's a free format that works just as good as the paid, why would anyone want to use the paid?
    Unless it's speed-related or something.

First of all, it's not necessarily paid, the .NET option. You can get the Express edition of Web Developer, which is free, and is as good as the paid one. Just that you can't sell what you create with it, but it's ok for learning or designing your site.

Secondly. What makes .NET better. It's definetely the increase speed with which you can develop your web application. There are a lot of web-controls that make things easier for you.
For example, user input validation is just adding a control, with no code added (and you can validate for correct Date format, or correct e-mail format, with no extra code at all).
Or, if you want to implement something like the management of users (list / edit / insert / delete, with sorting by columns and paging), it's very easy to do with data-bound controls, such as GridView, ListView or Repeater.

ASP.net is really great when the site you are making is a bit more complicated and it's not a forum or blog platform (where already made PHP solutions exist, and you just have to customize them). And it is quite easy to use in the beginning. However, to truly see the benefits of the language, you need some time with learning it. It's quite vast.

    - It's a Microsoft product, which by definition is great.
Notice the sarcasm in the last sentence.

Actually, I think it's quite beneficial for .NET that it is a Microsoft product. Skipping the prejudice, Microsoft invested a lot in the language, and you can feel that. The IDE is really great, there are a lot of support forums, and the languages (C#, ASP.net) are very well designed to make your code writing efficient and most of all pleasant.

  18. Hi, all. i'm newbie here. I'm still in collee. and i'm not toog good with anything.

i hope i can learn something from this forum plus i can host my website too. :P

    thats why i choose trapt17.

thanks for the time to read this intro.

    Hi, mas_fey!

You're not so good at typing neither :P

    Plus, that's trap 17, not trapt17 :P

But, skipping my evil sarcasm, welcome to Xisto!

And you could tell us how you came up with that nickname....

1st guess: you love the song Un Ano Mas, by Fey: http://www.lyricskeeper.com/fey-lyrics/227_mas-lyrics.htm
