  1. I saw many comics as a boy and some of them I have forgotten but there was one that sticks in my head. Now I would like to track down what that comic strip was so I'm asking if anyone recalls such a character as the one I remember. Please reply with any comics that fit the description. I don't think it was Beetle Bailey but I could be wrong. The character I am thinking of had a hug army helmet hanging over his face so you couldn't see any features just the big helmet. Maybe baggy clothes. Possibly the helmet was german because I remember the shape looked like a german helmet but I don't know if that was just the artists style. I remember thinking it was a boring comic strip back when I was a boy so I think it must have been in the newspaper as I would not have been buying boring comics. Likely the newspaper that would have carried the strip would be in Halifax if local and any other paper if not local. This is one of those things that can drive you nuts once it gets in your head so I have resorted to asking for help so I can sleep better at night. I hope someone has seen this character and recalls the name of the strip.
  2. Just keep going with the PHP tutorials and put the .php files in your Xisto webspace. There are plenty of things you can do right here without going through all that trouble. If you want database then find a host with database. (not sure if Xisto offers this or not)No need to download and install and configure... that's only if you want to learn howto administer a server.
  3. "C how to program" by Deitel and Deitel is one of the best books you can buy on learning C.This is what I used as a text book at the college where I got my Unix Application Developer Diploma.Next step after learning basic OOP concepts was to buy a compiler and I found Essential Visual C++ 4 by SAMS publishing. This wonderful book came with a compiler all for 40.00CA! Can't beat that with a stick. Well maybe now 10 years later you can find an even better deal.Hope this helps. Good luck learning C and C++.
  4. Well, you are not alone. I think it's good to have such emotions because it is a constant reminder that you must push on. I have started 2 businesses since adulthood (not counting lemonade stand and selling home made ordnance and sling shots to the local kids). Boy, there were plenty of broken windows in the neighborhood that summer! First thing, never quit your day job until you have a business plan or at least a nest egg to sit on while you plan. For some, trial by fire works best. Also known in corporate environments as being thrown to the sharks. Here's a work order now go to it and call if you need help. This, on the first day of work really sets the pace. For others there is a need to have maximum security blankets in place before starting a venture. This can include: having little or no overhead already having a client base (depending on what your business is - hair cutting vs. web design) having a backup plan in case plan A proves fruitless (brother in law promise to hire you part time if needed to pad the wallet) have agreements from prospective partners before starting business (watch e-Dreams released in 2001 about Kozmo) augment your income by having multiple revenue streams (this is my favorite and I allow this to make decisions for me) If I had to decide if something was good for the business or not I would consider the alternate revenue streams. If there were none then it was a bad idea. If there were 2 then I was interested but not convinced until I saw 3 then I was "in like flint". Multiple revenue streams is so important I feel the need to elaborate on this by stating an example. My first business was started with a partner and involved what we called "internet business developments". This was around 1999 when everyone was hot to get a website and many folks really didn't know why they needed one or what it could really do for them. This is where we would start educating clients to the point they started to understand the power of the internet and the many ways they could profit by introducing multiple revenue streams to their business. Now most of what I would call competition at the time was not really such in that the frenzy to create websites and grab money totally overlooked all chances of repeat business and alternate revenue streams not only for clients but also for the developers. One example of this is how your website can capitalize on traffic even if you are not selling anything. Search engines do not sell anything to users, they are free service providers who have such massive volumes of traffic they can sell ad space to just about anyone. Thinking about how Corel started as nothing more than a CD with loads of images on it... we had created a website which offered ready made "buttons" for use on websites so users who were graphically challenged could just download them and stick them on their site for free. It was the largest site "of it's kind" in the world - ButtonMe.com with over 100,000 images and growing at the rate of approximately 14,000 images every other day thanks to my developing a macro which automated production not only of the images but also the HTML and zip files sending them by ftp to the server overnight as we slept. It was a marvel to watch this thing go - 14 hours it took to complete running on a 486 or Pentium I don't remember. Had we not already rented office space I would have taken the company in this direction and forget about web consulting! (the buttonme project was started as a hobby only) We built it and they came. They came in droves! I was shocked at how well we did in the standings of Goolge and AltaVista and without even trying. I mean we didn't do anything aside from a few keywords and a robots tag and we were up to 10,000 unique visitors each month. So with some effort it could have been huge. So many places were linking to us that even today, almost 6 years after the domain name expired there are still sites out there that have a link to that name! Wow. Only so much time in a day though and we were spellbound by the money of online gaming. Our mistake was to put all our eggs in one basket. We took on a silent partner who funded an internet gambling project that was supposed to start with bingo and move on from there using modular development of a game engine. We had his word (this was a friend of my partner) that he would pay what it required to get the job done rather than work within the confines of a budget. We had put all our time and effort into this project and thus did not have any government contracts to fall back on. In Ottawa, most successful design firms have govt. contracts and once you're in you pretty much have it made. Anyway we had done our research and discovered that most internet gaming sites were running the same back end. Hmmm, a red flag went up in my head. Rather than buy or rent a license to use someone else's engine we decided to make our own. This would allow us to resell our engine once it was proven and we would have one alternate revenue stream which we would not have to share with the silent partner!!! Bonus. Well my partner interviewed several programmers and we picked one out of work immigrant from Poland with a pregnant wife who looked at our back end model and said he could do it in 6 months for 60,000. Sold! At the time game engines were being leased for 75,000 per year and up so it was an easy decision. We went to the money man to ask for salary and he proposed to give us 2 weeks of the programmers salary. I said no, we can't be coming to you every 2 weeks for a cheque for this guy! I wanted to secure the pay for the programmer and the partner started to balk at this and then he started with the legal fears saying it was illegal to have ANY part in online gambling in Canada. Even though we had planned to locate the servers in Antigua and Barbuda due to the favorable regulations and offshore policies the government had at that time. So he dropped the bomb and pulled out just like that and we were left holding a basket of eggs. Back into high tech I went but never was satisfied with the prospects though I was always in demand and earned good money. So I recently became fed up with the corporate rat race and started to work as a freelance graphic designer and web developer from the comfort of my own home (second business). I'm very happy now even though it's hard to make ends meet. Between small projects designing logos and such I am planning an online venture in which I will put to use some of my internet know how and that is where the real fruits are. If you want a bricks and mortar type business then figure out how to create alternate revenue streams using the internet. You may change your mind once you see the possibilities out there. good luck James Poirier
  5. Well stop the newbie bashing because I've been trying to find out if I can get notice when I am low on credits and guess what... I am tired of reading the same thing over and over about how many credits you need and how you can bank credits and how people don't read instructions. I still haven't found the answer if it is out there, I can't find it.Information is hard to find in a forum based site. It's like we all share the same office and thousands of us use yellow sticky notes all over the walls so you can't find anything anymore.
  6. Yes they are very bad. Just like putting your face up to the microwave oven watching those pizza pockets nuke.Even driving under power lines is bad for you. Then there are the cases like Nokia recalling ilke millions of batteries because they are exploding. Yikes. Got the hands free phone and keep it away from your head.
  7. I'm almost afraid to post here after some of the touchy people leaving terse comments. Anyway, what I got from the first line:"To whom would your flower-face have been lifted?"What would I, your mother have been like if you hadn't died during birth? Strong and supportive or would I have let you down in life.
  8. Ultraedit - the best darn almost free text editor there is. Photoshop CS2 and Xara X1 or Corel Draw 10 whatever the job requires. Recently I did a vector graphic from a scan of an old drawing done in like 1867. Corel Draw trace and some tweaking did the trick in really short time. I was going to do it all from scratch in Xara which might have taken me 8 hours and here it was done in like an hour. Bonus 'cause I charged the same price and the client was very happy.I do use Dreamweaver but only for managing the ftp of all my sites and when I need to make a Dream Weaver template for a website. Usually this is only needed on larger sites.Better to know what you're doing and use CSS styles and a good text editor.
  9. Of course scientists who understand physics and chemistry etc. will be the first to recognize what things are and with new discoveries of new technology it takes time to fully understand. Just because you can identify that a single dot represents hydrogen and one dot with two smaller dots represents water molecule doesn't mean that you can go and build a machine. To put it in perspective, look at how many people have trouble building a coat rack from IKEA with pictures and instructions. There are so many videos to see. When you have seen enough you start to realize that one scientist will agree with other scientists on principles that are based on fact, physics as we know it, chemistry, geometry, math and science in general. Each time someone solves a piece of the puzzle it becomes shared knowledge with the scientific community. Kind of like filling in all the easy words in a crossword puzzle. Sometimes you can get the hard ones without understanding what the word means. Someone did build a tripod structure that supposedly levitated but I don't think it is anything like a hydrogen generating thing. There have been many proven levitation devices built since John Hutchison revived interest in Teslas experiments with electromagnetism etc... besides the tetrahedron structure at the center of many of the crop drawings has long been understood to be only a part of the whole structure. Aside from these topics there are things going on now that can be replicated and proven on demand and yet scientists are still unable to explain. I'm thinking of the fact that capacitors are lighter when charged. Find the video that shows how to test this, it's really neat. Simple balance type scales are set up with a capacitor on one side and counter weight on the other. Charge is applied and the scales tip! Power shut off and the scales slowly balance again as the capacitor discharges! Still putting things in perspective: if no scientist can explain this then it should come as no surprise to people that scientists are still trying to make sense of crop drawings which detail technology and concepts of physics that are BY FAR more advanced than what is known today.
  10. Holy crap! I just saw the best compilation and explanations including decoding of symbols and a message! The crop formation with a picture of a beings head holding a circular thing full of dots. (that's the encoded message) The first time I saw this one it was during credits on another video and I thought it must be computer generated but NO it is real and already been scrutinized like the other authentic formations.Near this image around the same time is what looks like a giant replication (quite detailed) of the very same message that was sent into space back in the 70's by way of a giant radio telescope. Just realizing this alone is HUGE. Since we have already determined how to tell the hoaxes from the real thing it takes researchers and scientists little time to authenticate formations.Google "Maurice Earl Osborn explains the Crop Circles" and watch part one and two. The guy is kind of hard to listen to because he speaks with a droning monotone but the material is riveting to say the least. He must be into math heavily and he explains not only what certain features in formations mean but how it was determined what they mean and it is all science and bang on. Amazing, it's an answer to our radio broadcast. It's funny to see our own reactions to this. Think about it... we're alone, we look high and low all over the planet and we are alone. Then one day we take a deep breath and spew forth this really loud message into the void like we are shouting out loud in isolation somewhere. Then when someone answers we are all running around saying "did you hear that?" and "what the heck was that!?" "it must have been Bill he's such a practical joker". Maybe it took years for "them" to realize we were real and decode our message. Finally they come to answer in our face because we cannot find the transmitted answer that has probably been sent over and over. Or if we have, someone is not playing fair (Illuminati...) and not sharing. So realizing this, "they" are resorting to drawings on such a scale that even those of us not in the sciences will see them and realize they are authentic and maybe even figure them out. It's a good thing there are people among us who are intelligent and DON'T work for the government.Holy crap!
  11. It is becoming obvious there are communications going on using symbols and drawings in the form of crop circles. These communications seem to be plans of some sort involving water, hydrogen and the splitting and reassembling of molecules.Certainly this qualifies as some kind of new technology. I fear there are those who would try and build such a thing without first fully understanding the technology. (philadelphia experiment...)Has anyone seen these videos on google? Part one and part two are available for viewing by links found on cropcircleship.com check it out and reply here with your views on if this looks like a ship or a power plant or both. I would also be interested to hear opinions on possible connections to the pyramids, bermuda triangle, alien abductions, DNA tampering, the missing link, Atlantis, the arc of the Covenant, the Hutchison Effect, Myan calendar and any other seemingly related material. What do you think it is? Anyone feel up to the task of proving what it is? Post here what do you think it is?teleportertime machineshippower plantcommunication devicecrystal ball (...see the future/past)Imagine that a crashed UFO in the 1940's led to first contact with EI and that over a certain time period mankind has been observed to see how new technologies taken from recovered craft would be used. Imagine the US would immediately cover such sensitive details in the interest of national security and start develping new technologies for military use. Imagine the dissapointment of any EI who may be observing this and maybe they are now convinced the US has Imperialism on the mind rather than information sharing and saving the planet. Fed up with waiting on the US and maybe being lied to they are now showing the technical details to the masses by way of crop circles on such a grand scale as to be impossible for any one countries government to cover it up. Far fetched you say? Well, just watch the videos and remember this is just the tip of the iceberg and a SMALL piece of the big picture. Sends shivers down my spine. ...WOWWhat ever happened to the ship that was used in the Philadelphia Experiment anyway? Is it still around to be examined or was it destroyed?
  12. Free energy is not created, it simply exists. Don't need to be a genius to know that no matter how much math you do it's impossible to prove that every molecule, every ion, every prticle in the universe has or ever will stand still at the same time. So as long as there is motion you will have all the free energy you want. Just put up a solar panel or windmill or water wheel. Google "John Hutchison" or go here for starters http://www.hutchisoneffect.com/ you will be amazed at what you learn is going on around us as we speak. One thing he has invented is a simple way to create a battery with an extremely long life by crushing some quartz rocks and mixing in something else, maybe an acid or something, then shake it up and it lights a little bulb. He did this on TV real time and it worked! Rocks that he found at the edge of some downtown buildings flowerbeds for crying out loud. Here we have multiple sources of new technology for energy and instead of taking an interest in that to help save the planet we have some people going to war to steal oil from other countries instead.
  13. So maybe it is no longer useful to use meta tag keywords. Style sheets are quite popular and there are places to put keywords when naming elements etc. so I was just wondering if search engines condsider the name of an element or look at the words in a class added to a div.If every single page or publication of any kind on the net were the same size using roughly the same number of keywords then yeah content is where search engines should be ranking but I am thinking about how SEO and or CSS can be used to allow a smaller quality article or web page on a certain topic to rise above the larger and quite often spam oriented page or site. It really bugs me when I am looking for something and even though I use the advanced search methods with quotes and plus or minus I still see results on the first page of Google that are nothing more than stupid sites using some trickery to create a dynamic page based on your search terms that just link to other top level domains that look like other search engines or directories. Now this is the worst form of spam I can think of.
  14. Anyone who thinks Xisto is bad should go get hosted by atspace. Man I am convinced they have some kind of cron job or something running that keeps booting the server. I signed up with SiteUptime for kicks and giggles only to be shocked at how often the site went down. Really really bad, but on the other hand maybe they have this set up on purpose to help move people over to their paid hosting. Just not very good business practice if you ask me. Not allowing certain keywords so you can't get a paypal button to work? Just stupid, and so I came to Xisto. Much much better and loads of perks like PHP etc. Asking for regular posting is a good idea and I can see this evolving into a quality article writing business. Hmmmm could a member run such a business using the Xisto free hosting? I think so but sooner or later either a partnership or your own server would be required to be able to provide the free hosting model to others in return for the article writing.
  15. I imagine it's kind of like MLM schemes. May work for some people in the chain but not for others. Or maybe for a while the plan will work but sooner or later the ever evolving nature of the internet beast will change and this won't work anymore. Think of all those little classified ads you see in every newspaper and magazine asking for $2 plus SASE to get the worlds hottest chili recipe. Now some of those really are by some little old lady somewhere down south but some are just people looking to get you involved in a MLM plan. The worst of these is an ad asking for nothing but maybe a SASE for more information then you get a flyer type direct marketing piece explaining how to start your own small business using small classified ads like the one you answered. "Only 19.95 for the kit" and the kit is nothing more than examples of other classified ads you can run to make money. The old pyramid MLM scam can take many forms so beware because it can look like something online such as a traffic generating site. Notice from Plenoptic: I deleted the double post. It was 7 minutes apart so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and saying that Trap must have gone down so the first time it was submitted it went to a Error Page. If this ever happens check your post to make sure double posting doesn't happen and if it does please report it.
  16. Sounds like a dish my Grandmother showed me how to make. Real easy and fast to make. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Phillipino Chicken 5-10 chicken pieces skin removed 1 small onion chopped 1 lemon (or lime or realemon juice) 1/2 cup vinegar 1/2 cup soya sauce pinch of pepper to taste throw it all in a pot with lid and simmer on low on the stove top for 15 to 25 minutes depending on the size of the cicken pieces (I like to cut breasts in half and if I have time I stick a fork in the meat to allow penetration of the sauce) when this is cooking the smell will make you drool serve with rice and vegetables or salad and you can spoon the juice over the rice MMMMM good
  17. So what about DSL? Is there a reason why in your case you went with the satellite instead of DSL? I suppose if you are really out in the sticks then there may not be a DSL hub close enough. I have a DSL connection and I'm so happy with it I can't think about the money wasted on Bell and Videotron because it makes me mad to know how badly they are ripping people off. A lot of folks are probably laughing at Bell now saying "serves you right". So now I get a full 5Mb/s with no caps or limits of any kind. My DSL modem is nice with wireless ability, ethernet hub, USB connection, DHCP server, firewall, 2 VOIP ports and one POTS in case you want to keep your regular land line. Some people keep the land line just so they can call 911 in time of power outs. Once I got it up I was off and running around the net finding free movie sites to get my fix of TV and movies. Man, Bill Gates was right when he said "we will laugh at what we had" (talking about broadcast media). Can't understand until you actually experience streaming media in high quality with no DOGS or branding in the corners of your screen, no commercials, pause anytime... Now sure there are some websites that you need to be careful what you allow on your computer. For example stage6 divx allows you to create a custom version of the player so you can embed your branding, (knobs - everyone should boycott DIVX period and send a message loud and clear, ADVERTISERS STAY AWAY FROM INTERNET MEDIA). So, anyway for those of you still reading, beware of any TV or movie or video of any kind that asks you to install something in order to play the media. Malware is being compiled into these viewers and because it is built into the website as an active X object it is not scanned for trojans and as soon as you click OK or INSTALL you are asking for trouble. Firewalls don't help either because you have invited the trojan to live in your PC by asking for the player to install. I pass this warning to the sites I use so that maybe someday someone will create some kind of buffer system where posted links and movies etc. can be fully checked for trojans. Users should have to be screened somehow before being allowed to post in a streaming media site or any video, TV or movie site.
  18. Reminds me of a show I saw once on TV where a guy (Hollywood actor - can't remember his name) built his house from used tires. He would pack them with dirt so full he had to cram it in with a sledge hammer. By the time he was done the tire sidewalls were starting to bulge. These would be stacked and staggered like bricks and the gaps packed with more dirt. I guess since the walls were so thick and packed with dirt the place was always nice and cool even in the summer sun. He built another one from beer and pop cans using the same method. Pack with dirt, stack and fill the gaps. There was no mention of building permits or code or anything so I'm wondering if he had his house inspected. Hey, that would probably be fire proof also. Bonus. Wouldn't want to clean the place though, might be sweeping the floor for a while. Actually I think he had tile floors or something like that. It's been a while since I saw that so it's a little foggy.
  19. BIOS settings were changed so there was no way to access without first clearing CMOS. CRAP. Never allowing DIV-X to install from anywhere but the makers. I suggest you all do the same.
  20. This trojan is affecting the boot sector or is located in the boot sector. It is also apparent that the buggar encrypts the master boot record. Since the only action I took was to remove the keys in the registry and delete the files this must be the case explaining why it is so difficult to remove. Can't boot without it, use it and it respawns. Very nice, I just hope there is no way it could be hiding something in my bios. Time will tell, I'm about to start reinstalling right now.
  21. Very true about the paralysis. This happened to me once while in a lucid dream and I could not wake up and started to panic. I was so freaked out that when I woke up my pillow was soaking wet with sweat and I was still not sure if I was awake and so I had to wake up my room mate to make sure I was awake. This is the only time I ever had what I consider to be a nightmare. So, if you plan to practice lucid dreaming be warned about not being able to wake yourself. Just let your dream play out I guess. I recall trying to call out and not hearing anything, but sensing that maybe I was moaning loudly in my sleep. Man that was really scary.
  22. If you think that's sick then what do you think about shrunken heads?orDried up petrified monkey paws or rabbit foot...I just don't believe it's true in the first place. Simply because it would cost too much to do it. More likely the company is selling cheap, second rate or flawed diamonds at inflated costs and telling people they cost more because it costs so much to do this squishing of ashes into diamonds. Come on, do you know how much ashes are required to have enough carbon to create even the smallest diamond? Neither do I, but you can bet it's more than one bodys worth. To prey on people like this in their time of mourning is really sad regardless of how cool it is.I want to be turned into chum and dumped off the side of a tuna boat in the Atlantic so all the Mackerel will eat me and then I'll be on dinner plates all over the world! You can have my body but I'm keeping my mind forever.
  23. Oh, one more thing. I suspect in my case the trojan was downloaded in disguise as DIVx browser viewer from one of those sites that hosts movies and TV programs. This is the only reason I use my server for surfing the net while allowing JavaScript and Active X. Any other time I severely limit what my browser can do by disabling active x and javascript completely. That's how I know it must have been piggy backed with the DIVx installation.
  24. Beware, if a trojan is not completely removed it may have self replicated with new file names as one user has suggested already. Once you have some clue as to the file name or suspect files search the net for a while and eventually you will find a way to remove it. AVG and other anti virus programs as good as they may be, are not always the first to fix a problem. Great to detect, but try not to use the infected computer at all until you find out how to remove the trojan. Just look at my post in the computer security section to see how you too can be messed up by trojans if you don't follow through with removal right away. If the PC is on, leave it on but unplug the ethernet cable or whatever you use to connect to the internet because sometimes changes are made to system files and that requires a reboot to affect the cahnges. Get another PC from a friend and use that one to surf the net for tools and instructions etc... That one more boot just might mean the difference between non-destructive recovery and wiping everything out.Backup any important files by networking to another PC or putting on external storage before you start messing with removal.
