  1. Portugal: 6/10Positive: weather, beaches, friendly people (used to be more friendly), we eat boiled snails (disgusts every tourist, eheheh), you really can do what you want if you don't mess with others (i think THIS is called freedom); oh, yeah... we don't have Bush! :)Negative: politics, politicians (read CORRUPTION), taxes money just disappears, hospitals are being shut down (they want you to get medical insurance, but still pay more and more taxes), education is the worst i've ever seen; oh, yeah... we have Socrates! :)

  2. the strap is called the leash. and you're right, jlhaslip: it is very useful. surely you don't want to lose your board when you are a hundred meters from the shore. could (and will eventually) happen, sooner or later, because the material has a lifetime, like everything else in this life. that's why you pay more or less for it. i have a Dakine and, until this day, i'm happy with it. there are people who break their leashes once a year or so. anyway, many years ago, people didn't use it because it simply hadn't been invented. if you're interested in surf, i recommend a great movie about its history and spirit: Riding Giants.

hey, SNiped! UK is so close and you've got low cost flights now. why don't you plan some sort of a surf trip to Portugal? there's Algarve and Alentejo (the Costa Vicentina is beautiful - my favourite). and the water's fine. on the summer a 3/2 wetsuit is more than enough, problably too hot for you :)

  3. Hi!I would appreciate some enlightenment about this topic. I have a very rough idea about what a web service is but my experience is null. I supose it works something like this:- the web service (a program written in any(?) language) is waiting/listening for a request;- a request is made (by a client) via a browser (for example);- the web service treats the request and, when he's done, sends back the answer.Am I close...? :) Thanks!

  4. Hi!

I live in Lisboa (Lisbon, if you prefer) and I started surfing last summer. From the first time I tried that I got immediately addicted. I surf mostly on Carcavelos beach, between Lisboa and Cascais. If you want to "take a look" just follow these links:

    Carcavelos (on a huge day)

    Carcavelos (perfect day)

    Carcavelos (all pics)

The only problem is that it's too crowded. But hey... there are always more waves than surfers :)

    Good waves for everyone!

  5. hi there!this might look like a "unanswerable" question but... here it goes:i'm working in a financial institution for about 7 years, now. i'm a programmer and i use mostly Cobol and some RPG (AS/400 platform, today known as iSeries or i5). i also have some SQL knowledge.what i would like to know is: having concepts of this languages, how hard is it to jump to the "net languages"? i'm pretty sure there are loads of differences, like, for instance, Java is a object oriented language. this is rather confusing for me because it "destroys" the "well behaved" top-down style that i've got so used to :) my intention is, firstly, to gain some experience here, developing a site and then improve my wife's site (which is pretty awful, by the way).and if, some (very distant) day, i turn myself into a guru, i hope i can live from developing sites and leave the bank (pretty boring) and get myself time to SURF! :) thanks in advance!
