Here's a better option:

1. download this to your home folder: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
2. open up terminal and paste this command: ./name-of-the-file
3. wait for the wizard to come up and follow the directions
4. that's it!


Now whenever you want to start using it, you must do the following beforehand to get it up and running:

in the terminal:

cd name-of-the-folder-you-saved-it-in && ./ctlscript.sh start && rubyconsole

once you've entered Ruby Console:

cd projects

and this is where you do all your rails stuff and this is the workspace.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. It's a really cool OS, much better than 7.04 because it already comes with Compiz Fusion unlike having to install it manually in the previous version. This OS beats Vista and OSX in my opinion. I can't fully put down MS and Apple's OS cuz I use Vista-theme windows and AWN to mimic OSX.Despite the troubles I went through and incompatibilities I'm having with this linux distro, I am contented with its ease of use, low memory-consuming user interfaces (compared to Vista). I only have 512mb of RAM but I can still run all activities very smoothly. I don't think I would receive the same results with Vista (which needs 2Gigs ..so I've heard).I support Ubuntu all the way. It's just a matter of time when virtually every hardware would be compatible with this linux distro as well as alternative programs for ex-windows users such as myself.I still have a dual-boot system set up because unfortunately my printer (Lexmark 5400) is still not compatible by linux, i am hoping these types of problems will soon be overcome by the Ubuntu developers

why don't just use both OS. i use double OS in my PC and it works fine. the things that make me hard to leave windows os are games and softwares.. if only linux can provide emulator, a perfect emulator which can run windows program perfectly..

In his case, I believe you can completely transfer 100% to linux! Here's your solutions:

Alright. I finally took it to one of the computer shops and found out that I fried both the Hard Drive and the Optical Drive (DVD-ROM). So I took it home and just and for now we're using an external CD-RW drive to load a Live CD for Ubuntu. It's running fine except things are pretty slow because of the Live CD. Right now we don't have any hard drive so we'll be sure to get those two replaced soon.I'm thinking of buying some at newegg but I'll go check out the parts at china town. They're usually cheaper there.

I've also read about the technology, "TurboCache". What does that mean? And if I upgrade my System RAM from a 512mb to a 1gig, would that make my video card go up to 512mb RAM (my current video card supports up to 512 with the TC technology).

I'm interested in upgrading my graphic card (only months old) because it's too slow when I play BF2. Currently I have a 256mb 64-bit GeForce 7100 GS. I want to get a 512mb GeForce card but there's a 256mb card with a higher bit-count. I don't know the difference between RAM and Bit. i want to be able to set all the graphic settings to high and still be able to play the game smoothly. Which should I get, the one with higher bit or ram?And please tell me what each spec does to the video card.

If you would like to build your own (which is fairly easy but you must be careful) and buy all the parts in newegg for a total of maybe under 300. I recommend buying AMD dual core cpus and motherboard because they are much cheaper than Intel. You can get a good cpu for less than a 100.

Oooh.. Well, I just decided to drop it off my local computer shop and have them take a look at it. School is starting this week and I just don't want another thing to worry about. I'll get back on this thread and we'll see how it goes

really? The last time I checked I heard only one beep when I boot it up. I don't have the bracelet but I've never felt the static shock. So would bad memory result in my 2 drives not being detected? And if it is, would I have to change the RAM or the whole motherboard AGAIN... :XD:

2.) One beep - board is working fine

3.) One long beep then machine shuts down - faulty, improperly installed or missing CPU

4.) 1 short(Beep) System booting is normally

5.) 2 short(Beep) CMOS setting error

6.) 1 long - 1 short(Beep) DRAM ERROR

7.) 1 long - 2 short(Beep) Display card or monitor connected error

8.) 1 long - 3 short(Beep) Keyboard Error

9.) 1 long - 9 short(Beep) ROM Error

10.) Long(Beep) continuous DRAM isn't inserted correctly

11.) Short(Beep) continuous POWER supply has a problem

12.) A two-tone siren, generally caused by overheating or out of specification voltages

13.) Four beeps then machine shuts down. This is because this version of the BIOS will shut down your machine if no fan tachometer signal is detected on the fan header. Make sure you attach a fan to the FAN1 or FAN4 header or clear CMOS to reset to default (no checking).

Now I'm pretty pissed. So I replaced the power supply and now I can turn it on finally. But when I booted it up it says that my hard drive and my optical drive (DVD-ROM) cannot be found.

I went to the same local store but couldn't bring the tower so he briefly just said that it might be just the cable. Now I'm worried that the PSU might've blew out both these drives on the very first boot attempt (when the original PSU broke). I hope not and that it's just the cable.

what? Considering it is only 2.6ghz... but is rated up to over 5ghz. Plus its a dual core. With 2 GB of ram, and a downgrade to XP ... add a new video card and that thing is ready to game. Plus I plan to upgrade to 4GB eventually.. even though this will handle most games at 2GB

Thank you all for the help and suggestions. It turns out that the PSU was the one that got burnt. I took it to a local computer shop and they tested it and they told me it was dead. So I just got a new one (450w) for only $25 at the same store.

I'm playing games on this tower. I just had to add an extra video card (GeForce 7100 256mb 128-bit) right about $60 and I play a lot of MMORPG games like Scions of Fate, Sword of the New World, FlyFF, and Battlefield 2. I can play at high quality and it's very smooth. I COULD use a little more RAM and some more HD space but with my tight budget, it's a good deal. Next time I earn me some money I'm going to go for a 2-gig RAM or maybe even 4gb! I'm not really used to having a big hard drive and I tend to use up only 40gigs or less. Right now I'm only using up 20-gigs and it's got more than what I need.

Suppose I burnt the processor, I should see a burnt spot on it right? I'd hate to find out it's the chip. So is there a chance it might be the power supply? I haven't taken it out yet but tonight I will with my uncle cuz he knows all that hardware stuff cuz he used to build them. Okay, this is the second time building a computer on my own. The motherboard had a 24-pin socket but I didn't notice that the power supply had a 20-pin connector with an extra 4-pin to go with the 20-pin one. So what I did without knowing the proper connection, I connected the 20-pin to the 240pin socket on the motherboard and the extra 4-pin to the 4-pin socket across from the motherboard. The correct 4-pin was left hanging and wasn't used.So after all these things were done and I connected the power cable to the PSU and switched it on, I heard some popping sounds and then the computer shut down and I smelled something got burnt. At first I thought it was the motherboard but it turned out it was still working. Now I'm thinking that it might be the power supply that might be broke. I haven't taken it out yet from the computer tower so I'll go to a local computer shop to get this checked out.If you guys know what happened can you guys tell me?NOTE: I checked the CPU also but there seems to be nothing burnt there.

Hmm... if you've already got a keyboard and mouse and a Monitor, then you should opt for just a new tower. You can build one for yourself and buy the parts from newegg. It's sooo much cheaper than getting an already built computer. I got my own computer (good for gaming) and it only cost me $280! Now with 400 dollars to spend on a tower that would be one heck of a gaming pc! or anything you want it to be.The con about building it yourself is that you gotta be careful as to not break anything because it's a little bit fragile. Make sure you connect everything right before you turn it on. It's gonna be a bit annoying building it and a little time consuming, but for the price I paid for it was worth every penny.If you have a friend who knows how to build computers then that'd be a great help. I suggest you try it out cuz once you build a computer you'll love it.

OOOkaay, Thank you Saint Michael for helping me out. My computer is running fine now thanks to the enw motherboard. But now I have a different problem ( My brother's computer came at the same time my motherboard did and we still had to build his. Now, the problem with his computer is that we accidentally fried the motherboard because we didn't plug in the required 4-pin power cable to the motherboard's 24-pin socket. So what happened was that when we first tried to boot it up, we heard sparks and smelled something burned after and now the pc won't turn on.My question is: is it just the motherboard that's the problem here? Or even the CPU?My uncle used to build motherboards from scratch (sodering each circuits and resistors and wahtnot) and he told me that everything should be fine including the CPU. i just have to replace the motherboard. Is this true?

i don't think they'd find Vista easy to use. I recommend you just install XP cuz it's less confusing.

I was concerned with joule rating because my computer was already plugged into a surge protector (which now I know doesn't work). But I went ahead and bought me a surge protector from NewEgg that has 1000 joule rating. Hope this works..

My motherboard doesn't beep at all and I can't boot it up. I already tried using another monitor but still no signal. I'm getting a new motherboard with onboard video so hopefully that would fix the issue, but if that doesn't work then should I replace the power supply?Oh yeah one more thing: What joule rating should I look for in a surge protector?
