  1. Done. Now I'm back to work on the dollar signs. Thanks for the code. I couldn't figure out how to keep the background from repeating.Suz
  2. Thank you both. I've been working on it all day. Please have another look, now, and let me know if I'm there, yet. Fun4TheMoney I'm especially concerned about the background. I had to cheat to get it to work. I want to be sure it lines up right in all browsers. I'll try it without the dollar signs, too, and see how it looks. Suz
  3. Thank you. I don't have time to redesign it if it isn't too gawdawful, but I did get rid of the red 4. That might relieve a little of the stress. Since my theme is "fun" I wanted happy "confetti" colors. Maybe I overdid it. My role model was the wahm site. Work At Home Moms I really like their exuberance and they're very successful, but maybe that has nothing to do with design. Content is still king, so I think it's time to concentrate on that. Thanks again. Suz
  4. Thank you. All I wanted was one vote of confidence so I can copy this to the other pages and start marketing. I can always upgrade the design, later, as long as I know it's adequate for now. Okay, now I'm ready to swap links. I'll start another thread for that. Suz
  5. Okay, this is the last time. I've changed this @#!& thing a dozen times. I have to pick something, stick with it, and move on. Please let me know if this home page layout will do or if it's still too cluttered, confusing, or whatever. Fun4TheMoney Should I stick the links down the left side, under the buttons, leave them where they are, or get rid of them and figure people will find that stuff when they click the buttons? (The other pages work, but they still have the old design.) TIA for taking the time to critique this page. Design is definitely not my best thing. Suz
  6. Great idea. I'm going to try it right now. Thanks.Suz
  7. I get about 65, but they aren't all from here. My screen name, here, is also my domain name, and I have 6 web sites, all linked, so Fun4TheMoney shows up for all of those, too. I was really impressed by how fast all of these things turned up on Google. I used to use a Yahoo-based search engine--not anymore. Google is the best. I'm also in love with Google Adsense. Their customer service is awesome. I haven't been with them long enough to make any money, but so far I'm impressed, anyway. Suz
  8. I get a "page cannot be displayed" error on my antique laptop (a Pentium with no numbers after it--LOL!). If the site is only for high-tech folks, it won't matter, but if he wants the rest of us to visit, he'll have to change something.Posting to lots of forums is a good way to get more traffic, but it is very time-consuming.Suz
  9. I'm working on a whole family of sites, for freebies, marketing articles, rural living, Christmas, writing, shopping, games, crafts, gardening, and anything else that catches my mood. They're all listed at the bottom of my Fun4TheMoney home page. If you visit, please let me know if the new home page design is okay. I'm experiementing before copying it to all the other pages (which means the rest of the site looks different right now). Design is my worst thing--I'm much better at content. Fun4TheMoney I've started 2 new sites that will be strictly link directories. If anybody wants to swap links, let me know. Suz
  10. Okay, Im ready for a 2nd try. First, let me thank everyone who thought it was fine the way it was. I thought so, too. LOL! But when I started reading what the others had to say, I had to agree with them, too. I think that your color selection is average and that those blue buttons dont really go with the white background. Your web site definitely needs more style!!! So try to make it more stylish!!! Okay, I got rid of the blue buttons. Maybe when you become big, u can add a better css(which i could make).... I struggled with CSS for a day or two and decided it would have to wait until I can give it my full attention. I do agree that it needs it, however. To make your website much more attractive, you should consider the use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheet). Thank you for this. I didnt have a clue what CSS meant when I posted this topic. And lastly, you should change the default "Times New Roman" font to something else. Oops! I missed this. Ill change it next time around. Your websute has far to much buttons in my taste. Youre right. I got rid of almost half of them. Also, notice that the cell in which tha main banner is has white bakground... and the bannerĀ“s background is pale blue. . . . better without borders I never saw that blue background. The backgrounds were all supposed to be white. My monitor isnt working right, so they looked white to me. All fixed now. Thanks. (I also got rid of the table borders.) I think you should add some style to the page, you need some layout, some thought about the colour scheme. There's no structure there, there is navigation and "content" all over the page. I'm sorry, but I don't think you page is ready. I agree, but I am also uninspired right now. Well, not exactly uninspired, but my creative juices are flowing in the writing and marketing areasnot in design. I tried to make some improvements. Hopefully I succeeded enough to move on for now. <fingers crossed.> Okay, please check again and let me know if this design will fly, temporarily. Only the first page has the new design. I didnt want to copy it to all the other pages if it still isnt ready. Fun4TheMoney Were having company for the weekend, so I may not get back here until Sunday afternoon. Then I'll check your responses and get back to work. Thanks in advance for giving my page another look. Suz
  11. Thanks to both of you for checking the sites and for the tip on logs. I'll check and see if I can find out that way where the thing came from.Suz
  12. Okay, here's the whole story: I went online to research game sites for my husband to evaluate. I loaded Galaxy Casino, Dragon Court, and Barponline. They all sat there for about an hour, then I got Bob to check them out. I had already registered our email address with Galaxy, about an hour before, and we hung out there for about another half hour, so I don't think there was a problem with that one. Next, we tried Dragon Court. They also wanted an email address, so we gave it to them and got this back: Hi There, This is an automated message from Dragon Court with your newly created character and password: Hero = [FarBarger] Pass = [denihuj] Later Dates, -AI Fred- Bob didn't like that one so he went on to Barponline, after only about 5 minutes. When he got to Barp, he started to create a character, but then it asked for his email address. When he tried to type it in, he made a typo and got an error message. He didn't want to lose his character, so he tried to back up and fix it. That's when the McAfee box came up. Does any of this help? Suz
  13. The site I was on was barponline.com. I lost all the other info when McAfee took over and scanned my whole system (basically because I didn't know what I was doing). It takes about an hour to do a complete scan on my system after McAfee traps a virus, and I'm too nervous to NOT to a complete scan, since McAfee recommends it. I'll let you try it, first. If you don't find anything, I'll try again. If you do get a virus off that site I'll start shouting it from the rafters. Thanks for the quick response.Suz
  14. I was evaluating games sites for my "Play" page, when a message came up that McAfee had trapped a Trojan Horse virus. I want to warn my visitors to stay away from that site, but McAfee didn't say where the virus came from. My question is:Could that virus have come from some other site, but took McAfee a few minutes to find it or is it an instantaneous thing, so I know that the site I was on was the culprit? Is there a Virus Buster in our midst who'd like to track this down and nail the bleep or should I just forget about it and move on? As you've probably guessed, I've never had a virus before. I'm on AOL, with the new security features, but that exhausts my knowledge of the subject.TIA for your help.Suz
  15. Ya got me there, Sparky. On my real computer I use Dreamweaver, but when I'm stuck on the toy laptop, I use IE/Notepad. I think I'll follow you around for a while and see if you come up with something I can use, too. Suz
  16. Mine is Fun4TheMoney I also have Country Naturals and ePennyPress and The 12 Months of Christmas They all need work. I'm updating them as fast as I can, but I keep changing my mind about what to put where and how to do it. Please don't hollar about the tables. I'm learning CSS and will upgrade them all as soon as I can. Suz
  17. Hey, you're super-dude. I'm just a noob. Besides, I don't have any friends. If you want to contact Xisto and see if they want to run this like they do the tutorials, it's fine with me. In fact, anything's fine with me. You can be the head if you think we need one. A proposal coming from you would be a whole lot more impressive than coming from me. I do think we need to get it all better organized and re-post under a better subject, like "Syndicate Your Web Content" or something more appropriate than my dorky Dmoz title. All I did was confuse people with that one. Suz
  18. The websites wouldn't have to be hosted, here, but the content would be posted here. We could use the existing forum categories, and sprinkle our content around, or start our own thread, somewhere, and post it all there--or both. I've posted an example in the Creativity Forum, titled "The Perfect Garden" so you can see what I mean. That example is way longer than it has to be for web content (it was originally written for a print publication) but it should give you an idea of what I mean. (A website review might only be one paragraph long.) Okay, everyone--feedback, please. Suz
  19. Attention Webmasters: The following free article is yours to copy and paste on your website. Please leave the authors link in placeits the only payment shell get for her efforts. If you use this piece, please email the author (suzmolthop@aol.com) for a link back to your site, or just so shell know where her words have landed. Thank you. ~*~ The Perfect Garden: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue By Susan Molthop, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The concept of old, new, borrowed, and blue applies just as well to gardening as it does to that other tradition. Heres what the Internet has to offer for creating the perfect garden: Something Old Old Roses Why would anyone want old roses instead of new ones? The two main reasons are durability and fragrancethe new hybrids offer too little of each. Old roses are strong, hardy, require very little care, and really smell like, well, roses. Other considerations are versatility and muted colors. Old roses dont have to hog the spotlight. They can blend in and be perfectly happy in the background (where they can concentrate on smelling like, you know, roses). Vintage Gardens has a great online catalog of antique rosesalmost 2000 varieties to choose from. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. Old Veggies Why would anyone want old-fashioned vegetables instead of the newer, stronger, hybrid varieties? Theres only one reasonflavor. The hybrids look better, grow faster, produce more, and are more resistant to weather, pests, and disease, but the ornery, sometimes ugly old heirlooms have the three most important qualitiesin my mouth, at leasttaste, Taste, and TASTE. Heirloom Seeds offers an excellent variety of backyard-garden-tested old-fashioned vegetable seeds. http://www.heirloomseeds.com/index.html Old Flowers Again, the question, Why bother? The answer, this time, is variety. Most garden centers offer the same old stuff, year after year after year. That means your yard will look pretty much like your neighbors, no matter how hard you work, unless you get creative. This year, why not plant some antiques? Select Seeds specializes in these open-pollinated varieties. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Old Herbs Is there any other kind? One reason to grow herbs is that they dont need a lot of space. Apartment-dwellers with a sunny windowsill can grow a terrific herb garden. Herbs thrive on neglect and tight spaces. If you dont have a green thumb, start with herbs. Richters has a huge Website, with seminars, free catalogues, and a great selection of seeds to order online. https://www.richters.com/ Something New New Flowers The word new answers its own why questionyou need them just because theyre new! Most new varieties have something really great going for themotherwise thered be no point in bringing them to market. If youre looking for something spectacular, either in size, color, or just being able to grow something that couldnt be grown before in your hardiness zone, look for the new stuff. You can count on Burpee to come up with something new every year. http://www.burpee.com/ New Veggies The first reason for trying new vegetables is that theyre practical. These seeds or plants will have something going for them that makes sense. They produce more, earlier, or theyre more drought, heat, or cold-tolerant. If youve had problems growing the old standards, try something new. The other reason is that some new veggies are exotic. If youre tired of carrots and beans, heres a small sample of alternatives from the stir fry section at Ani Direct. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Something Borrowed Seed Swaps The main reason for swapping seeds is that its FUN. Its also FREE (except for postage, which is almost nothing), it gives you an excuse to make friends with other gardeners (not that you need an excuse), and it provides an opportunity to experiment with plants you may never get any other way. Why let the big seed companies dictate what you grow? Heres a whole page of seed swaps from Blossom Swap. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Cuttings Why nottheyre free. Expand your garden with cuttings of your favorite perennials, or go shopping in your neighbors backyard. One good reason to borrow plants or cuttings from your neighbors is that you know that variety will grow in your area. The secret is in knowing when, how, and how much to take. Heres the how-to from Rebeccas Garden. http://www.rebeccasgarden.com/articles/In_lowers/255.html Something Blue Blue Flowers Why blue flowers? Because theyre a real challenge for growers. Most are sort of purplish, and many are very hard to find. Blue wildflowers are common in certain areas, but they can be finicky about growing outside their neighborhood. Here are some blue flowers and berries from Park Seeds. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Blueberries Why blueberries? Because theyre good for you. Current research shows that blueberries have better antioxidant properties than grapesby a wide margin. Theyre low in calories and fat, but high in fiber. Blueberries are native to North America. They grow in Washington, Oregon, California, Georgia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey, and Canada. The season starts in April in the South and moves north through September. They like moist, well-drained, acidic soil. The Finch Blueberries site contains lots of information and pictures. They send plants all over the world. http://danfinch.com/berrys.htm Old, new, borrowed, or blue, the Internet hosts over 18,000,000 pages on gardening. If you dont have time to surf during the long gardening days of summer, keep it in mind for those long winter nights. Enjoy! ~The End~
  20. Sorry, I shouldn't have called it Dmoz. I was thinking out loud and should have waited until the idea was better formed. Forget Dmoz and think "syndicated free content" like at Freesticky.com. We don't do anything but post good quality free content, right here on the message boards --no typos--no vague references to other posts or anything--just like a short freelance article, making sure that the content includes a link to our sites. Put "FREE CONTENT' in the subtitle, so people know they can use it on their sites and it's ready to publish. Maybe we should start each one with a short message to publishers to please not remove the link, since that's the only "payment" the author will receive. Since we already have free hosting and tutorials, here, this forum is a real draw to webmasters. It's the perfect showcase for content writers. If enough people are interested, maybe we should present this idea to the staff, here, and get it all put in one place, like the Tutorial board. If not, it won't be the first time one of my ideas died an early death. Suz
  21. Sorry. My computer is acting screwy. Is there any way I can delete the duplicate? Suz 60348[/snapback]
  22. Huh? I edit my code there all the time. Backup your page, first, since your changes are permanent. Open your page using Internet Explorer. Hit View/Source. (Your page opens in Notepad.) Make your changes and save. Close the Source window. Hit F5 to see your changes. When you're happy, upload as usual. If you've screwed it all up, go to your backup file and start over. It's primitive, but it works. I was the Writers' Exchange Guide at About.com for 2 years, with nothing but Internet Explorer and my word processor to run my whole site. I wouldn't want to write from scratch that way, but it's fine for simple edits, adding links, etc., or you can use IE to grab a template from almost anywhere to get you started. After that it's just copy/paste/edit/delete/ and so on. Suz

  24. Okay, I'm getting closer. The idea is to provide free content--doesn't have to be just links. It could be anything of value that we post here. Pick an appropriate category, pick an appropriate title. The sub-title would always be "FREE CONTENT". That way, webmasters would know it's okay to copy and paste to their websites. Here is a post to one of my threads. a really good affilliate program if you have a high traffic computer related website is tiger direct... they will pay you pretty good for selling their products... http://www.tigerdirect.com/ -------------------- http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ If this post was part of our free content program, I could copy and paste it to my website, linking to both TigerDirect and to Jimmy's web site. I get a recommended link without working that hard, and Jimmy gets the link to improve his search ranking, and also a chance that someone will click through from my site. Anybody who wants to could participate. It doesn't matter if they write a poem, a how-to, helpful hints, site reviews. The only 2 differences between these and regular posts would be 1) the "FREE CONTENT" subtitle, so we all know we have permission to copy and link, and 2) the careful formatting and inclusion of our URLs so the posts are free of errors and easy for webmasters to pick up. Now I think I've explained as well as I can. If anybody else likes the idea, let me know and we'll give it a try. Suz
