This link was found at http://www.irishexaminer.com/irishexaminer7497-qqqx=1.asp Scientists astonished as dietary pill transforms childrens brains By John von Radowitz FOUR children whose brains and mental abilities were suddenly transformed after they took a simple dietary supplement have astonished scientists. Scans showed their brains underwent three years worth of development in just three months. At the same time they displayed remarkable improvements in tests of reading, concentration, problem-solving and memory. One boy who previously scorned books and was hooked on TV developed a love of reading and declared he was bored of television. The three boys and one girl, aged between eight and 13, were taking part in a pilot study looking at the effects of diet on developing young brains. Scientists believe the results are powerful evidence of the harm junk food is doing to Britains children. All the children were classified as overweight. Zach, aged eight, weighed eight stone, George and Rachael, both 11, each weighed 11 stone, and 13-year-old Gareth weighed 12 stone. At the start of the study the children were given a supplement called VegEPA, which contains a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. They took two capsules a day for three months and were also encouraged to cut down on fatty snacks and fizzy drinks. The children showed an increase in reading age of well over a year, their handwriting became neater and more accurate, and they paid more attention in class.

Taking asprin regularly may make you up to 50 per cent less likely to develop colon or rectal cancer. A massive study of 6,217 people conducted at four major medical institutions in the United States revealed that people who took asprin at least four times a week had half the risk of developing colorectal cancer when compared with others who never took asprin, or those who only used it occasionally. Explaining the findings, Dr Paul Stolley, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, said: "It seems that asprin may inhibit the formation of substances in the body called prostaglandins which are known to play a role in the growth of tumours". Added Dr William Castell,an expert in preventive medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the famed Framingham Heart Study: " Taking asprin four times a week would not only help reduce the risk of large bowel caner, but also reduce the risk of heart attacks and heart diseases." A word of caution, however, before you rush off to buy asprin, check with your gp, it can cause stomach bleeding if you are prone to ulcers. Aspin tablets are usually 300mg per tablet, and many experts regard 75mg enough to reduce the risk of the above diseases, so by breaking one tablet into four and taking 75mg four times per week would be a good idea, provided you have no history of stomach problems. Fruits and herbs including rhubarb, pomegranate, mint and cloves could be used to develop new drugs for a range of human diseases, according to major new research. Scientists at Kings College London tested more than 8,000 natural chemicals taken from 240 plants most commonly used in Chinese medicine. They found almost two-thirds of the herbs contained chemicals which experts believe have the potential to be used as drugs to treat human diseases. Ginseng and rhubarb may be used to treat inflammation, while ginkgo and mint could potentially help control diabetes. Pomegranate and cloves could be used in treating HIV, because they contain a wide range of chemicals which could interfere with the way the virus attacks cells. Traditionally cloves have been used to treat flatulence, nausea and vomiting. In tropical Asia cloves have been given to treat such diverse infections as malaria, cholera and tuberculosis, as well as scabies. Traditional uses in America include treating worms, viruses, candida, various bacterial and protozoan infections. It is not safe to inhale cloves, however taken orally is fine provided you follow the RDA. It is recognized that rhubarb not only exercises a digestive action but it operates directly as a conveyer of bile salts. It can therefore be classed as a hepatic stimulant. Rhubarb performs its first digestive operation in the mouth by stimulating the taste buds with its pleasantly bitter flavor which gives a sense of cleansing out the oral cavity, preparing it to taste the coming food. When it reaches the stomach its digestive effects come into full play, causing an increase of the flow of gastric juice and inducing their movement, thus favoring the processing of the contents of the stomach. Besides stimulating the secretions from the liver which convey the bile salts, it assists the intestine in regulating the absorption of fats.

If your bad Cholesterol levels are too high, here are some foods that may help. ARTICHOKES, ONION, AND 1-2 CLOVES OF GARLIC a day can help lower blood cholesterol, although it is not known why. WALNUTS, SUNFLOWER SEEDS, ALMONDS, PUMPKIN SEEDS, LINSEED, WHEATGERM AND SOYA BEAN all provide linoleic acid, the essential fatty acid that lowers total cholesterol and , to some extent reduces the tendency of the blood to form harmful clots. Eat small regular amounts: too much linoleic acid will lower HDL as well as LDL, cholesterol. OATS, PULSES, APPLES, DRIED FRUIT, CITRUS FRUIT AND PEAS are all rich in soluble fibre which reduces the amount of LDL cholesterol entering the bloodstream. Soluable fibre needs a low-fat diet to work well. Oats can also lower raised blood pressure.

Hello, and a very happy, and healthy new year to you all. I dontknow about you, but i feel full, and i know i have put on weightthis christmas, because when i am in the bath, and i look down all ican see is my bulging stomach. Perhaps its just as well!!. Howeverfor christmas, my wife and i bought a bike for each other, and todaywe have been out on it, and i have to say just how much better weboth felt, when we came home. I have asthma, and because i have puton weight, my breathing has not been good, but when i returned frommy cycling ride, my chest felt much clearer.I also intend to take Apple cider vinegar, every day, i found thislittle article on the web:It helps to detoxify the liver which plays an important role inweight loss. There are historical facts that Egyptians took applecider vinegar for weight loss. Some claim ACV speeds up themetabolism while some claim it burns the calories to reduceappetite. To lose weight just take 2 teaspoons of apple cidervinegar, mixed in water, before every meal.ACV is also available in tablets and capsules. According to somenutritionists the combination of apple cider with kelp, vitamin B6and lecithin is much more effective for weight loss than ACV alone.Go on then, get a bike, and a bottle of ACV.
