  1. Their Eyes Were Watching GodEssay QuestionIn the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God language is utilized as a symbolic representation of power. Language is particularly used to represent superiority and dominance over a specific person or persons. Language is also the primary weapon of the former slaves because otherwise they have little or no power in the depicted society. These former slaves use language as a means to prove to each other that they possess power over individuals. This novels shows that there always is a structured system as to whom has power over whom. In this society language is the great divider and the means of the development of a social ladder. The main purpose of using language as a sign of power is the mere fact that the main characters of this novel were former slaves and thus had no real means of expressing power in their society. With no opportunity to exert power on their former masters they strove to classify themselves among their peers. In this way Their Eyes Were Watching God allows the reader to relate and understand the problem being experienced buy the subjects if the book.(continued) Their_Eyes_Were_Watching_God.doc
  2. I have looked up some information about each of these systems. In my opinion a lot of it depends on the gaming style you use and the type of games you prefer. Nintendo is known for gaming innovation and more juvenile style games. It also has added the concept of movement to its system using the motion sensing control system and 'nunchuk' attachment. XBox 360 is a good system for those who want to step it up in the seriousness of games. It may not have the motion sensing capabilites that the nintendo Wii or Sony Playstation 3 have but it has good specs and some great titles. Of course, if you're one of the many diehard Halo Series fans, you will definently want to consider this console. It also has a lot of connectivity for online playability using Xbox Live and an internet connection. Finally, the BIG gun, Playstation 3. I haven't gotten my hands on one but it is obvious that the specs are amazing. This system pulls out all the stops and is built for the serious (and wealthy) gamer. It also has internet connectivity and a motion sensing controller. But a big advantage is that it is built to run on HD enabled televsions. It boasts high resolution graphics and a super-fast cell processor. Like I said, I haven't actually used the PS3 and so i have no first-hand experience with the game selection. But with the very limited avaliabilty (basically the only way to get it is with 2000-3000 dollars on Ebay), I would probably vouch for the Xbox 360. Its great features and the fact that the new Halo 3 is coming out pretty soon gives it an advantage. I might change my mind when Playstation 3 becomes more avaliable and I get some first-hand experience with it. The reason I would not choose the Wii is that I don't think the game set that Nintendo goes for is to my liking. They seem to be geared towards children and the younger generation of gamers. Although, I do like the motion sensor capapbilities that are buuilt into its controller, and i admire how they seem to come out with something new with each system to put out, from touchscreens to motion-sensing. So, all-in-all I would suggest the Xbox 360 for your loved one this Christmas, and make sure you also get them Halo 2, or 3 if it comes out in time. Whew, that was a long review, I hope I helped some people in making a decision.
  3. I LOVE Final Fantasy. I am also one of those people that believe that it is the best series of games out there. The first one I played was Final Fantasy 7 and it remains my favorite. My favorite characters were Cloud (of course) and Red 13. I have also played some of the others like FF10. I like Final Fantasy because of the in-depth story line. Some may say that trhe graphics could be better, but you CANNOT get more detailed and intricate as the stroy line. And any good RPG player knows that the storyline is the key part toa good RPG. I also like the battle system. It is like active turn-based and is really engaging and interesting. I really try to find all of the secrets I can instead of playing through the game quickly, even though it is extremely har dbecause the games are really complex. I would definetly suggest the Final Fantasy series to anyone. Did I mention that I also so the Final Fantasy Movie, Advent Children. The graphics were BREATHTAKING, even though the storyline could have been a little better. But seriously, you HAVE to see the movie to understand how well these CGI graphics were rendered. Everything is so realistic, but now I'm going of topic, anyway, if you havent yet check out some of the FF's. I suggest Final Fantasy 7 for the beginner, the graphics may not be the best, but it really shows off how good the stroyline of an RPG can be. GO Final Fantasy. I can't wait for the next one.P.S. Does anybody have any information on Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerebus? I think it has to do with Vincent from Final Fantasy 7. I'm going to do some research.
  4. I actually do not have any stairs in my house. It is a ranch style house with an extended back section. In my last two homes I had stairs and it kind of was hard to adjust to living on just one level. Although, I like it because it is safer (no fire trap hazard on second floor), and it makes the home more welcoming. I also like the fact that it came with a very large back yard (a little bit of topic), and that it has a finished basement. I do have stairs leading from the first floor to the basement and from the firsr floor to the attic though. I'm not sure if that counts. I may also be adding an addition that would provide kind of a semi-second floor in order to add more room. Haha, its funny how I'm talking about steps in my house. lol.
  5. Hey guys, I'm having a problem setting cookies with PHP. I am trying to implement a script that will allow someone to log in and access members only pages on my website. One of the aspects is that I have to place a cookie on that persons computer. I know that you can use the PHP function setcookie() to place it on your computer. The problem is that wherever i have setcookie() in my PHP code I get an error: "Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/runeco/public_html/cookie.php:6) in /home/runeco/public_html/cookie.php on line 8" i looked up some information about it and everyone says that it is problem that I have may have blank spaces after the closing php tag "?>". I througly checked my editor and could not find any blank spaces. So i decided to test something. I opened a new PHP document and just told it to set a cookie, here is the code: <HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>Cookie Tester</TITLE></HEAD><BODY><?$message = 'hello';setcookie("IM_A_COOKIE", $message, time() + 3600);?></BODY></HTML> I ran this code and I got the exact error i already stated above. This proves that the problem has to do with the setcookie() function. Is anybody else using setcookie()? If so, how do you get it to work, or are you experiencing the same problems? If there is no solution, I'm going to need to find a different way to make a login system for my site users. In that case, does anyone know how to make a login script with PHP that gets information from a MySQL database and supports members only pages. I would really much rather have a solution for my setcookie() problem, as I may need it for other parts of my website. Thanks in advance, and props to anyone that can solve my problem!
  6. I have also read a lot about (and even gotten my hands on) the new Microsoft Zune. In my opinion I think it is a poor attempt for Microsoft to try to enter the portable music market. The center circle is very tricky to use as a beginner, and like or not the interface is distracting. I like the idea of a music network that ustilizes Wi-Fi, but you can only sample a song for 3 days before your forced to pay for a download. The Zune is only getting high publicity, i think, because it is a new Microsoft product. The Ipod is still the dominating force in portable music by a long shot, and it will take a VERY big, new innovation to knock it off its pedestal. I'm going to stick with Ipod on this one guys, but I won't count Microsoft out yet (you never really can). Once it gets a better understanding of what consumers want in an Mp3 player, it probably going to blow the music market wide open. Then again maybe they should just stick to PCs...
  7. I thought that may have been the case, but when I checked my Spam Folder in Gmail it was not there. I have also tried to send it to a Lycos Mail account with the same problem. The code that I showed in the first post is being used in a PHP document after someone has signed up, it is then to send a confirmation e-mail to the account that they registered. I have not set any sort of e-mail account in my Xisto.com subdomain...will this disallow me from using the SMTP? Maybe somebody could post a step-by-step procedure on how to make a PHP code send an e-mail to someone's e-mail address using PHP and the Xisto.com SMTP server. Another thing could be that there may be something wrong the SMTP configuration on my account. I would appreciate any help on the matter, Thank You.
  8. I am posting this because I believe there is a problem with my SMTP server (at Xisto.com). I have been trying to send mail with PHP using the mail() function. Although PHP did not return any errors, none of the mail was actually sent... I have enclosed a copy of 2 different codes I have tried to use. Either I'm making a mistake with these codes or there js a problem with my SMTP server. If there is a mistake with my code, please tell me what is wrong. Otherwise, maybean admin can look at my SMTP server configuraton to make sure it works. CODE 1 $email_to = "myemail@gmail.com"; //SEND MAIL TO HERE$subject = "Testing SMTP Server";$message = "This a test of the SMTP server on Xisto.com.";mail($email_to, $subject, $message, 'From: ' . "runeco@runexchange.trap17.com" . "\r\n") CODE 2 $to = "myemail@gmail.com";$subject = "Testing SMTP Server";$message = "This a test of the SMTP server on Xisto.com.";$headers = 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . "\r\n";$headers .= 'Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1' . "\r\n";$headers .= 'From: Runeco <runeco@runexchange.trap17.com>';mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers); Note To Admins: My Username is runeco and my subdomain is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  9. Hello, I have looked up the solution to this problem numerous times on this forum but cannot seem to get a straight answer. I have also read that something called SMTP Authetication is required. I have looked up numerous ways this should be done, but I believe it required special protocols. This is the code that I tried to use to send e-mail using the SMTP server here at Xisto. $email_to = "whoever@whoever.com"; //SEND MAIL TO HERE$subject = "Testing the SMTP server";$message = "This is a test of the SMTP server on Xisto.com Hosting.";mail($email_to, $subject, $message, 'From: ' . "runexchange@Xisto.com" . "\r\n"); No error occurs, but it does not send the message to the indicated mailbox. If anybody knows what I am doing wrong I would GREATLY appreciate am explanation on how to use the SMTP here. Even if you can just display a working code snippet of a mail() function this would help me GREATLY. Thank You, please conside that I have tried very hard to find the solution on this forum as well as on the internet.
  10. yes, i know that they can't actally put it on the sever, but sometimes (if you use MySQL) can get the pass word and mess with the tables. if they do this, the whole program won't work or even senitive infomation can be put in the public. so is there a way to make it so that the password is encrypted and the tables are safe?
  11. Don't even get me started on Halo. I can confidently say that Halo is the best 1st person shooter series since Perfect Dark. The maps are really extensive and have a lot of secrets, which keeps the game interesting. The effects like sounds and graphics work great especially with Halo 2 and the XBOX 360. And the key part to ALL first-person shooters: The Weapons. Halo has a ton of sweet toys, ranging from man-made weapons like the Battle Rifle to insance alien-technology weapons like the Needler. I never get tired of this game. Another major thing going for it is its MASSIVE community. Halo is the crown game of XBOX Live and everybody is vying for the top positions in the massive global arena. I was always going over to my friends house to play Halo, and I finally got the equipment to play it myself. I know that it takes away from my time, but it is a really engrossing game. The bad thing is that it seems that there is a new contender for the first-person shooter crown, a game called: Gears of War. I looked into it and it seems pretty darn good. But I know Halo is going down without a fight and I hope this pushes that top brains at Microsoft to whip out something even better.GO HALO!

    Ps3?

Yeah, I'm really into all the hype about Sony's Playstation 3. I did not get one when it came out, and now you can only get them for like $3,000+ on Ebay. So while I'm waiting I took the liberty of finding all I could about this new piece of gaming hardware. First of all I'll tell you this thing is a BEUT. Super-fast processing, sound engines, graphics engines, and a cell structure system to pull it all together. It also comes witha ton of bells n' wistles. I'm still not sure if it is all that better than the XBOX 360, which still blows my mind. If your like me, you lived for Halo and still live on for Halo 2. Unless Sony can whip out a game that has more playabilty that Halo 2, i'm not sure the Playstation 3 has a chance to intrude on Microsoft's domain. So the next thing I did was look up some of the prospective games for PS3. I found some great remakes: Zelda, Fear, Fall of Man and a new one Gears of War. After doing some more research I found out that Gears of war is supposed to be a Halo 'killer'. Now this really got me interested so I checked it out. Turns out that Gears of War is AMAZING. The graphics really show off PS3's processing power and the gameplay is top-notch. It follows a path that most 1st person shooters seem to neglect. It plays off of teamwork and strategedy and is really in-depth. The reviewers also have put their two cents in and found that it is a great game. It does seem to have its downfalls like it has very few maps and some of the controls are hard to master. I know that I can conquer the learning curve and this is just another reason for me to wait for the next shipment of Sony's new game machine, The PLAYSTATION 3.I hope you liked my little synopsis, reply if you think I missed anything (I know I missed alot...). I'll see if I can review the other systems like the 360 and the Wii.
  13. i argee too, Super smash Bros is a very good game. it seem that is should get repedive, but really theres so much to do.. my favoritve charater (by far) is kirby. i had Project 64, and played the gamecube one, and this charather never fails me. i cant wait to see the one For Wii. i heard that Wario will be in it. Not to go off topic but the Wii is cool. it has motion senors to actally 'hit' the ball.
