  2. SAN FRANCISCO--Although the market for communications equipment continues to shrink, the PC market has begun to stabilize, said Intel CEO Craig Barrett during his keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum here. "I can't tell you when the recession will end, but I can tell you that the computer market has stabilized, albeit at a lower level than last year," said Barrett at the four-day convention used to highlight the chipmaker's technological advances. "You might expect the computer sector to recover faster than the communications sector." Barrett's speech was similar in theme to the one he delivered at last year's convention, but showed a slight increase in optimism. The world remains mired in a recession, Barrett noted, but companies that can deliver a compelling technological experience to consumers and businesses will succeed. In one demonstration, Barrett showed off how PCs could be used to stitch together a video-like presentation from digital still photographs. The continuing growth of the Internet will also force businesses to upgrade their back-end systems, Barrett predicted. "What our industry has in front of it is the build-out of the Internet and the convergence of communications and computing," Barrett said, adding that the main challenge facing the industry is "how do we give the end user more reason to use our technology?" Overseas and emerging markets will also become crucial for the technology industry. In China and India, for example, there are, respectively, 12 and three PCs per 1,000 people. By contrast, in the United States and Germany there are 611 and 297 PCs per 1,000 people, he noted. Seventy percent of Intel's revenue derives from outside the United States, and that figure will likely grow, he added. "Every country wants to participate in the next economy. There is a huge opportunity for us on the industrial level and at the consumer level," Barrett said. "The worldwide opportunity is important. The established markets will, I'm sure, show some continued growth out of the recession. But that percentage growth will be smaller than what you might see in China and Eastern Europe." The company's approach to the market in the future will involve concentrating on making processors and other "building block components" for clients--for example, PCs and handhelds, networking and telecommunications equipment and servers. Earlier on Monday, for instance, the company came out with its Prestonia processor for one- and two-processor servers. The company also confirmed it is working on Montecito, a version of the Itanium processor due in 2004. Montecito and its successor, code-named Chivano, will be influenced by Compaq Computer's Alpha chip, sources said. To complement its chips, Intel is expanding its effort to build software and testing labs in different parts of the world so that application developers and hardware manufacturers can tune their equipment for Intel chips. Despite the optimism, the industry will have to conquer some obstacles along the way. The adoption of broadband communications--a potential watershed moment for the convergence of the PC and entertainment--remains anemic in the United States. And security is a looming concern. And the economy, of course, remains impossible to predict. "No one knows exactly what's happening," Barrett said. "They (the analysts) have all established their credentials of not knowing what the hell is going on."
  3. Memory-chip designer Rambus will show off faster versions of its DRAM technology in San Francisco this week at the Intel Developer Forum, a confab for computer-hardware designers, the press and other tech mavens. The new RDRAM flavor is called RIMM4200 and is an update of Rambus' RIMM technology--for Rambus inline memory module. It adds a second memory channel and faster new chips to increase the speed at which data moves from the module to other PC components. The RIMM4200 incorporates two 2.1GB-per-second memory channels to transfer data at a combined rate of up to 4.2GB per second, Rambus said. The current Rambus RIMM, the 1600, uses only one channel and offers rates of 1.6GB per second--though many PCs use dual-channel configurations that pair modules to deliver rates of up to 3.2GB per second. The RIMM4200 module also uses new, speedier RDRAM chips running at 1066MHz. The current Rambus RIMM uses 800MHz RDRAM chips. RIMMs are constructed by combining several chips on a circuit board. The move by Rambus comes at a critical time for RDRAM. Though PC makers and Intel say RDRAM continues to offer the highest performance, efforts by Advanced Micro Devices and a new Intel 845 chipset for the Pentium 4 have helped popularize a rival technology known as Double Data Rate SDRAM. DDR SDRAM, a faster version of standard Synchronous Dynamic RAM, is now available from all but a few PC makers, who generally pitch the technology as a middle-of-the-road offering between RDRAM and SDRAM. As a result, Rambus finds itself in the position of having to convince buyers to upgrade to RDRAM over DDR SDRAM. Rambus' 4200 modules should be available starting in the second quarter of this year and, according to sources, will be part of a coming hardware upgrade for high-end, Pentium 4 desktop PCs, which Intel plans for the early summer. At that time, Intel is expected to incorporate the new flavor of Rambus and bump the speed of its Pentium 4 front-side bus from 400MHz to 533MHz. The bus provides a data pathway from the memory to the processor. Increasing the speed to match the faster memory allows the PC to shuttle data more quickly between memory and the processor, speeding overall performance. Samsung and other DRAM makers will manufacture the new RDRAM chips or RIMMs. Samsung will offer its own demonstration of the new memory at the Intel Developer Forum, the company said. The 4200 modules are part of a Rambus plan, announced last year, to boost RDRAM from its current transfer rate of 1.6GB per second at 800MHz to 9.6GB per second at 1200MHz by 2005. The extra RDRAM performance will be needed, as DDR SDRAM now runs at speeds of up to 333MHz and offers data rates of up to 2.7GB per second. But most PC makers offer the technology at 200MHz and 266MHz, where it offers data rates of 1.6GB and 2.1GB per second, respectively.
  4. every now and then, when i am waiting on the line for the start of the drag, fire will be coming out like i am using nos. what is causing this?at first i thought if you get 6/6 perfect shifts the previous race, and restart, it happens. however i just proved that thought false.
  5. Not to be confused with the what is youre ride thread, i would like to know which are the 5 cars which you prefer in this game...1st place being the best quite obviously...
  6. In the cheats section on here and gamefaqs it tells you when you get different unlockables by saying for example complete 10 outruns in level 4. Or sometimes it says stages. What the hell is this? I'm probably about halfway thru the game and have never seen a level or stage screen or anything similar, or even seen the words level or stage mentioned other than 'level 2 engine upgrade' or the like. Could someone tell me wtf I'm missing here, cuz I dunno how to win 27 races in stage 5, if I dunno wtf stage 5 is or where it is etc. Also if anybody could tell me how the Mustang GT is on so many's favorite list please do, cuz mine won't turn. It sux, has the handling of a brick. I turn with it and it barely turns, slow or not, and if I even tap the brakes it doesn't help, the damn thing skips 'no turning' and jumps right into 'wipeout' territory with nothing in between. Thats on default tuner options, I've tried tinkering with it and it still sucks so if anybody could tell me how to fix it that'd be great. I spend like 50k on the damn thing and its not even raceable aside from drags, which theres only like 3 of those in the whole damn game...Maybe I don't have enough parts to take handling up enough for the power of it or something, the green bar for handling is about half, but I don't have any more parts unlocked to take it up, I've got mostly lvl 2 parts for accl and top speed, and only lvl 1 parts for handling, but I still don't see how it should be this bad when the handling bar is only a little bit less than that of my other cars, but the GT is way faster so I want it to work but it won't. No uniques are on it. Mostly because I don't know how to unlock them cuz as I said I don't have a clue as to what stages or levels are in this game when its not a level or stage game, just a bunch of races on a map thats free roam. Plz enlighten me anybody who can.
  7. Im really poor at textures and need some done for my part of the map. Id like a red-brick texture (like the orange one we have at the moment but deep red). Also can someone make a small 64x64 grass texture and a 64x64 leather texture for pub-seats? It'd be really greatly appreciated
  8. This thread is a community project I'm interested in starting in responce to all these "HL2 can do this" posts. So, have you found something in a game that you don't think Doom 3 can match? Post a screenshot. Describe it. Ect... I'll try to prove to you that Doom 3 is just as capable. Anyone interested in lending me a hand is welcome. I would like everything to be custom made however so that the resulting testmaps, ect... can be released for all to see firsthand running on their system.

  10. All VAC threads belong in the Valve forums. We do not have the ability to unban you from a VAC ban. Your best bet is to buy a new copy of HL.Any new VAC threads started here will be deleted. For help, either visit http://store.steampowered.com/ or email Eric @ erics@valvesoftware.comThank You.
  11. I don't know if this is possible So if this sounds wrong or dumb, help me out please OKThis what I wanna do:we organise LAN's and wan't the same stats system that the online players have, our server at the LAN will basically be a gaming computer. Can that server be modded to run the cheating system (cheating death) and a stats program, for fun the program that gives players the option of how to treat a team killer too.Can this be done on a server at a LAN that doesn't connect to the internet Also we have a CS 1.6 running Version 6,from valve and not steam will it work on this version or only steam?
  12. hi thereim not sure what this thread should be posted in, but im really desperate for some "official" help.i took a demo of a good friend of mine, whom im very suspicious of hacking, esp wallhacking, but i just cant seem to find em getting Vac banned. He's been vac-banned before, and he went to get new cdkeys to play.anyhow, just wanna know if it's possible to send in demos to Vac for evaluation, and then after having them take some action.or maybe someone here would be kind enough just to give me your opinion ? here's the demo:demo1whenever he's confronted, he denys and claims hes from leagues and stuff..which i know very well he aint...
  13. Helo im am admin on a very popular swedish server,my question is this.....Will i (or all the admins) on the server get baned case we use x-spectate 1.0 ....It?s a wery wery helpfull tool and we use it all the time on the server...Server ip if u wana wisit: rpe.mine.nu:27015
