1. I wish you luck with your project. It is a complicated idea. First of all because it is difficult to have clients demanding your service. It is difficult to persuade a client that your services are proffesional if they are for free. Also, enroll talented people will be the difficult part. I guess another difficult issue is to coordinate people with such different backgrounds and localization. I recommend you create some coding conventions and begin to think about track tools and code repository. Good luck!

    Well, you can probably help with the enrolling talented people part :D

    Right now, I'm just using a phpBB board to coordinate the freelancers and projects. At this point, anything more would be excessive, as I only have a handful of freelancers onboard with me.

    As far as clients requesting service, I plan to actively bid on projects at places like elance, guru, and getafreelancer, mentioning that I could their work professionally for free. I wont solely rely on the html form on my website. The html form's intent is to cater to the other major market my website is targetted at: the individual without computer knowledge or without time.

    All of our designs will be under an open license, and we may even obtain bits of code from other open source web designs.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

  2. Finally, my server is running again. So if you tried to click on the link without success before, try again. It should work.

    We still are looking for some more people, as Freedom Design will move into the "Deployment Phase" within a week! We've got a handful of people signed up, but any more help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm a PHP Programmer... i love programming in PHP... unfortunately, your website dosen't work...

    It should be working now.
    Thanks!

    Hmm. It seems to be working now. Try again. Or, you can just drop me an email with a few paragraphs about yourself.

    admin nogreeneggsandspam [at] tophatman [dot] cjb [dot] net
    Remove the silliness, and replace the [at] and [dot] with appropriate characters. This anti-spam internet meme is getting out of control...

  4. What's up, Xisto!

    Want to get your name out there? Want to produce something?

    I am starting a free webdesign company whose purpose is to provide people with costless freelance services. As it is still new, I'll be needing all the programmers and talents I can get. If you have any sort of creative talent, especially in flash, graphic arts, javascript, and other computer tasks, it would be greatly valued if you were to signup.

    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

    What you get:
    1. Exposure: your name and a link to your website in the "about" section
    2. The chance to build a portfolio. If you've ever tried selling freelance services, you'll soon realize that the jobs go to whoever has done the most. If you ever will go "professional", this will be a huge boost.
    3. The chance to contribute to the online community. There are so many free online webhosts, but not any (to my knowledge) free online freelancers.
    4. A possibility of making money (although currently Freedom Design is entirely free, at some point bigger projects will require either ads or cost. If you worked on that project, a portion of that money will go to you)

    Responsibilities:
    1. None! You will only be given work that you like and that you can complete. If you don't complete the work then it's no big deal, it will just be completed by somebody else.

    If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or complaints feel free to reply.

    I am eagerly looking for new ideas to improve on my service.

    On a side note, please review my webdesign. It's rather bare, I know, but I wanted it to be to-the-point. Also, is this spam? I don't think so as it isn't advertising for my website as much as it is asking people for advice on my website, but, admins, please tell me if it is. I don't want to make anybody mad.

    It should be noted that at this point, Freedom Design isn't "public". Once I get a few people onboard with me, I'll start bidding on freelance places like http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and others (all the bids, of course, will be zero)

    Thanks in advance, everybody!

  5. Here's how to make pictures were drawn in pencil!

    1) Open up any picture

    2) Apply Filter>Stylize>Find Edges.

    3) Press CTRL+U

    Settings:

    That's great! I use GIMP2 and Paintshop Pro, but it shouldn't be that hard to translate it. Very simple, but with good results.

  6. This is so funny, I couldn't help but post it!___We all know that politicians can't answer direct questions but what if the tables were reveresed?July 28, 2004IMAGINE if ordinary punters dealt with questions in the same way as our politicians.Scenario one the random breath test. Police officer: "Had anything to drink tonight, madam?"Driver: "That's a complex question, but I would like to say that I've been driving for over a decade now and am comfortable that my offence-to-kilometre ratio is well below the national average."Scenario two The intimate exchange.Partner one: "What the hell are you doing in bed with my best friend?"Partner two: "Go into any ordinary Australia home or small business and I'm sure you'll discover that most people regard both beds and best friends as positive occurrences. Must you put such a negative spin on everything?"Scenario three Year 12 mathematics exam. Exam paper: "Differentiate 3x + tan x with respect to x."Student: "Quite frankly I think I've answered enough questions on x and tan over the past six years to make my position on this matter absolutely clear."Clearly civilians are unlikely to get away with such blatant obfuscation. So why are we so tolerant of this infuriating practice in our leaders?During a 2002 Four Corners broadcast on the children overboard beat-up, the following exchange took place between journalist Liz Jackson and Prime Obscurantist John Howard.Jackson: "Does it worry you that polls indicate that a lot of Australians don't believe you on this issue?"Howard: "Well Liz, um, given the media and other focus on this issue, it's not surprising that some polls would indicate people didn't agree with me and, ah, and you know they, they are falling fairly evenly but look I am, eh, I know what I knew and I know that I had never been given, um, advice that contradicted the original advice. I know that I used that original advice in good faith and I also know that this was not the issue that swung the election as most of the media campaign is implying."Wow. Informative. Especially that "I know what I knew and I know" bit.Mark Latham is also turning into a repeat offender, despite his attempt to project a straight talkin' "yeah, I inhaled" image. In April, Catherine McGrath from ABC radio's AM program asked him about the Labor Party's pledge to bring Australian troops home from Iraq by Christmas.McGrath: "Now, through the briefings you have had, what do you think the consequences would be if the troops were to come home early? What are the consequences on the ground?"Latham: "Well, I'm more worried about the consequences of what the Prime Minister had to say yesterday, that's the immediate concern we've got because it was a very reckless piece of politics by John Howard in publicly outing the role of one of our spy agencies in relation to Iraq. And that can only increase the level of risk for Australians in Iraq, both military and civilian, and that's a major concern. This is a reckless piece of politics that ultimately is at the expense of our capacity to successfully engage in the war against terror."Which part of "we're discussing your policy" did Latham not understand?Given the lack of forthrightness offered by our elected officials, we should hardly be expected to answer such a straightforward ballot paper on election day. When asked "who do we want to run the nation?", I propose a range of options such as:Your question is an interesting one, but before addressing it I'd like to talk at length about something that has absolutely nothing to do with it.I'm not saying I refuse to nominate who I want to run the country, but by the same token I'm not ruling out completely ruling it out either.You're not authorised to ask that question which I don't recall for security reasons.Sure, there'd be chaos the next day when the powers that be tried to work out who'd won, but at least it'd demonstrate the benefits of a straight answer. In the meantime, they'd just have to be content with knowing that we know what we knew.

  7. Check this PS article out!____________Like any good hacker, Benjamin Heckendorn knows that the best way to pay homage to a beloved piece of gear?say, a classic Atari 2600?is to rip it apart and transform it into something else, preferably something portable, with wood grain. So when the sign shop he was working at got a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machine?an industrial device that cuts three-dimensional parts from solid blocks of metal or plastic?he used it to craft a custom-designed handheld case from two one-inch-thick slabs of acrylic. Then he stuffed in a 2.5-inch screen from a portable TV and the guts of an Atari 2600, which he?d chopped up and resoldered to make more compact. Powered by three AAs and a nine-volt, that first portable system came complete with a brightness switch, speakers, buttons from an old Nintendo controller, and the signature faux-wood-grain trim.Heckendorn, a part-time filmmaker and graphic artist, has since created several more portable Ataris, including one with a solid oak case, as well as portable PlayStations and Nintendos. Most of the newer systems run on rechargeable batteries and are more energy-efficient, thanks to active-matrix screens modified to be lit by white LEDs. As soon as Heckendorn finishes a system, he puts it up for sale on his site, benheck.com, to pay rent and fund his films.But why buy when you can build? Heckendorn has just written a how-to book, Hacking Video Game Consoles (Wiley, $30), with detailed instructions for eight different portables. And because few people have milling machines in their basements, half of the projects use hand-cut engraving plastic for the body, including the SNES system illustrated at left. Find the complete chapter on creating this portable at Heckendorn?s site. (benheck.com)PEERING INTO THE SNES PORTABLEA. Power on/off slide switchB. 8. Hey!I'm just looking to see if any of you guys have any pointers for somebody's first Halo2 stunt video. I've already gotten most of the filming done, or at least a good part of it, and I need to find some good programs for splicing it all together. I need a program for recording video on high quality through the RCA plug on my computer and then cropping it with ease. I use Windows. I already have Zqwei-stein and that's excellent for arranging and programming and mastering etc., but my only problem is I need a program for cropping video into bite-sized clips and recording an entire VHS tape worth of my stuff.I've got some stuff planned:>I have a bizzare disappearing warthog. I shoved a whole bunch of boom-boom barrels under a warthog in zanzibar, and then lit the fuse. The warthog literally disappeared. I could not find it anywhere. I'm guessing it must have somehow landed somewhere very far away.>I also have some cool looking sword flying.>I have just some straight forward multiplayer clips.>I composed a not-too-shabby rearrangement/cover of the original halo theme which I plan to feature in parts of it. It threw in some spicy synth sounds and a new bongo beat while keeping the original integrity (sp?) of the song.>...and many more warthogs flying. ;)Any suggestions would be helpful!

  9. When ever anything of any significance in the gaming world is scheduled, there's always so many rumors. I remember it was the same way with Halo 2. I heard from so many people that it was released in France, that their friend got it off ebay, that they'd played it etc. Of course none of them were true, but it's amazing how naive some people can be (no offense). I always distrust any rumor I hear about prereleased games. A company will NEVER prerelease a game, a movie, or a gaming system. It's just not like them. There have been leaks in the past, (e.g. Episode 2) but those got serious media attention. If I recall correctly, Doom 3's Alpha version was leaked several months before it was released. It was bouncing around p2p networks & misc. warez sites. However, things like that get media attention. You won't find a valid leak or prerelease that hasn't been splashed on the front page of every gamesource. Don't trust anything that isn't. Of course, that's just my humble opinion. ;)

  10. Cellphone manufacturers actually designed their products with viruses. So the cellphone users would buy another cellphones from them after their units were infected, or they, the users, would upgrade their phone with fees. these flaws were created long before they could release the mobile phone unitse in the market.

    This is same with the Windows Operatin System, they already had Windows 98 with them when they released Windows 95, So people will be required to upgrade to Windows 98 because of Windows 95 flaws. That's just one of the reasons how Bill Gates became rich. ;)

    51350

    You are right in speaking of planned obsolescence in software. However, you seem to have your terms (and grammar) a bit mixed up. I believe you meant to say that cellphone manufacturers intentionally embed defects into their products. Embedding viruses would make very little sense.

    Many software companies also purposely scale back on the debugging process so as to gain more revenue from support and technical assistance. That's just another reason why OSS is so great!

  11. Cell phone and Blue Tooth viruses are just around the corner. It's a big and scary world out there...

    Cell phone viruses, largely considered a paper tiger in the digital security world, became a bit more dangerous this week with the release of a two-pronged program.

    Writers have released a virus, known as Lasco.A, that spreads both through wireless connections and by attaching itself to files, antivirus company F-Secure said Monday. Until now, malicious cell phone programs have spread using one mechanism or the other.

    "We have received a new Symbian malware that combines two spreading tactics, which is common in PC malware but previously unheard of in mobile systems," F-Secure said in a posting on its Web site.

    The Lasco.A virus will attach itself to any application file on a phone that uses the Symbian operating system, F-Secure said. It is activated when cell phone owners click on the file and install it on their handsets.

    "Thus any (application) file in the device that gets copied to another phone, as frequently happens as people swap software, will also contain a copy of Lasco.A," F-Secure said.

    The program also acts like a computer worm, attempting to copy itself directly to any phone within range using Bluetooth wireless technology, F-Secure said. That capability is similar to several recent worms--variants of the Cabir worm--that have managed to spread to a limited amount of phones in the wild.

    Such programs have not been very successful, however. Only recent cell phone operating systems are programmable to the extent that viruses can effectively spread. Moreover, the large number of proprietary operating systems used in cell phones make the development of broad threats much more difficult.

    As the new virus can only spread on cell phones that have Bluetooth in discoverable mode, the best way to protect handset systems is to set it to hidden Bluetooth mode, F-Secure has advised.

    Tell me your thoughts!

  12. I personally just use postnuke (a general purpose content manager), modified to my liking.

    I find it gives me more flexability than a blogging machine.

  13. Hey I was just wondering if anyone here was into martial arts. Like if you've taken it before, are currently enroll, or plan to do it some time. I've been doing martial arts since i was four.. and i have two black belts now. One in shaolin kung fu... and one in Hapkido. My demo team and I make martials videos that i'd be glad to share once i figure out my freakin' hosting. Anyway, post up what you think? :D

    45303

    Hey, that's awesome. Right now, I have a blackbelt in Villari's Shaolin Kenpo Karate (which is mostly Shaolin Kenpo) and am working on a blackbelt in Hapkido!

    I wonder how similar our styles would be. However, I've also had some influence from a freestyle TKD school. It was so small, it was really more of a club, and we actually didn't do very much TKD: we mostly just did real-life application (e.g.: I attack you with a knife. Do something that would work on someone twice your size.)

    Once you get your site up and running, I'll have to check it out. You can buzz me at nospam@tophatman.cjb.net (I use "nospam" so I can block out spam spiders with ease and not have to worry about posting my address)

    Yeah, and finding hostings a pain. You might also want to check out:

    I use them for one of my sites. (my homepage and blog)

  14. Does anybody know of any legit pay-per-impression advertising services? I want to make an online php game (similar to Xisto's "Army System") and I expect to get a largely disproportionate number of impressions compared to clicks.
    The only ad service I currently use is Google Ads.

    Thanks!

    EDIT : For more information regarding PAY PER IMPRESSION ADS, PLEASE go to the following link,

  15. Runescape: a game created by the Jagex company to make money. As some people will know, I used to use runescape. I however got bored with it due to the fact that half of the community are a bunch of snobs. The other part of the community want to trick you or get all your gold. The fighting is very boring. Basicly right click on the person you want to attack then wait. Moving around is also very boring. They do have a big supportive community and it is in no way lacking updates. However after A while it will become boring.

    44810

    Unfortunately, that pretty much describes it. I really enjoyed it for a while, but then I got really tired. The graphics also can get dry after a while... I mean, they're doing it in an applet, which is rather impracticle.

  16. Yikes! I just found out about this. It's really something to watch out for when making SQL of any sort, not just log-ins. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to circumvent.

    Check it out:

    What is an SQL Injection attack?
    An SQL Injection attack happens when a user gives your script data crafted to change your SQL to do something you didn't intend it to do. Consider this SQL:

    $sql = 'SELECT * FROM users WHERE username="'.$username.'"
    AND password="'.$password.'"';
    if (mysql_query($sql)) {
      echo 'Logged in!';
    }

    It looks fine, but what if a user submitted this as their password:

    " OR 1=1 OR ""="

    This would cause the SQL to read:

    SELECT * FROM users WHERE username="" AND password="" OR 1=1 OR ""=""

    which would allow the attacker to get into your system without even knowing a login!

    On many databases you can also run multiple queries by putting a semicolon in the SQL you pass. Consider this password:

    "; DELETE FROM users WHERE ""="

    This would run the first query, which would probably find no records, but it would then run the DELETE query which would delete all of yoru users. Note that this could also be used to delete any other data in yoru system or to change your data or insert a new user with admin priviledges.

    To protect against this, you need to "escape" the variables you put into your SQL. When using Mysql you can do this:

    $sql = 'SELECT * FROM users WHERE
    username="'.mysql_real_escape_string($username).'" AND
    password="'.mysql_real_escape_string($password).'"';

    If you're using PEAR::DB you can do this (this will work for *any* database system that DB supports):

    $sql = 'SELECT * FROM users WHERE
    username='.$db->quoteSmart($username).' AND
    password='.$db->quoteSmart($password);

    Pretty scary stuff, huh? ::shocked::
