  1. Hi everyone!

(Mods- sorry if this sort of request is in the wrong area, it seemed to be the most reasonable place when I looked! If it is, please do move it somewhere else! :P )

Our brains are fried trying to think of any possible web designs for a charitable, sort of fund raising program underway by a group of friends (mainly for helping out the homeless by providing paid jobs for them with running a buisness.) This is kinda a new idea, although we have been working hard to get something like this to help out the (trustworthy) homeless around the reading area. This has been a project as a group of friends over a rather long time, although we just lost one of our group to a different college (which turned out to be in our favour, he was a good friend though!). He was being rather unrealistic and just generally pulling things down. Because of his bad organisation a Ł1,700 fund raising climb (all money had been sponsored and totalled) had to be called off. Twice!. It never actually happened. Anyway... Moans over, now we can continue...

Basicly, we need a website up and running to get support, but none of us have any ideas that are any good for site layout or just the overall design. I don't mean to ask for any coding or website building to be done, maybe just knock up a template in photoshop or something that looks good. (I'll take it from there and put it into web format :P ). As of now the name of the charity is SecondLife (although we may change it due to legal reasons or in favour of a more catchy title!) We don't really have a logo, but room to put a logo in would be useful, maybe at the top or sides of a page.

What we would like is a navigation area of the page, maybe in a dedicated box along the left side, with another box somewhere, possibly just below that? for latest news bulletins. If you think it would be a good idea to get some sort of banner made up to fill a band across the top of the screen, or the part to the right of any nav boxes please say so and I'll get working on it. (I think this would be a good idea). The rest of the stuff - colours, (background texture?), boxes or borders need to be sorted and thats pretty much what we need help deciding on, along with the layout of these things, like where boxes should be to look good etc.. As I said, It'd be great if you could put together a visual layout or something in photoshop (or anything else for that matter) that we could use as our design!

(Credit would go to whomever helped us out majorly, with respect plastered on the site to them as well!!! ;D)

We already have most of the content and pages down on paper and we're just waiting for slow old me to get a site ready to lob it all into!

We all would appreciate it very, very much if someone would help us out by getting a nice look for our site, and maybe even help us out by sponsoring the reincarnation of the twice failed climb - Details will be found on the site when it goes! (I'll probably start another topic somewhere else to get interest! :) )

Thanks in advance; Ben, James and the team!

Just an idea... but it is attached, if you want something changed tell me or if you hate it just say so...

  2. Google's free Web email offering may be available for correspondence in 40 languages, but efforts at worldwide expansion using the moniker "Gmail" continue to face complications.
Last October, the search giant grabbed headlines and miffed some British users when it voluntarily renamed its service "Google Mail" in the UK, following an out-of-court trademark dispute.

The woes don't end there. Across western Europe, a quiet battle rages on between Google and Daniel Giersch, a German-born venture capitalist who insists he'll never relinquish his six-year-old trademark registration of "G-mail...und die Post geht richtig ab" (translation: G-mail... and the mail goes right off).

"Google's behaviour is very threatening, very aggressive and very unfaithful, and to me, it's very evil," he said in a recent telephone interview with ZDNet UKs sister site CNET News.com from his part-time Los Angeles home.

A Hamburg district court has already handed Giersch victories at both the preliminary and final stages of the litigation. Dismissing Google's arguments that the two names are not confusingly similar, it ordered the company earlier this year to remove all "Gmail" references from its German service and to cease handing out gmail.com aliases to users within the geographic area.

Buoyed by that success, Giersch said he plans new lawsuits to defend more recent registrations of the trademark in Switzerland, Norway and Monaco, where he hopes to expand his electronic postal delivery business that goes by the G-mail (short for "Giersch mail") name. He said he is also considering a suit in the US based on alleged "investment losses" that the overseas disputes have wrought on the American arm of his venture capital firm. (Google has already encountered competition for the US trademark.)

Google still maintains it has clear rights to use the Gmail name in Germany and in countries throughout the world where it has applied for such trademark rights. It lodged an appeal against the Hamburg district court's decision but claims it has nevertheless been abiding by the orders to restrict all people determined to be German residents to use only googlemail.com, ever since a preliminary injunction was issued in April 2005.

"In no case do we offer or allow a user to use '@gmail.com' if the user's IP address is German," a company representative said in an email interview.

Google has initiated its own actions against the 32-year-old Giersch in other European countries since the German litigation began, asserting it has prior rights to the Gmail name and that Giersch's registration attempts should be blocked. Giersch's lawyers said the company has filed so far, unsuccessfully for a cancellation of his Norwegian holding with the country's trademark office. The Google representative would confirm only that a court challenge is pending against the Swiss trademark, adding that "there are a number of cases outstanding against Giersch in Europe".

For the search market leader, the rationale is simple: "Google will take the action it deems necessary to protect our interests in Europe," the company representative said.

    Google vs Giersch
Sergey Brin and Larry Page started Google with a home-brewed data centre in a dorm room. For Daniel Giersch's venture, it was a backpack and a bicycle.

When he was 18, Giersch founded his first company, a same-day mail delivery service designed to offer a swifter alternative to the Deutsche Post. Within a few years, by his estimation, the company was delivering 80 percent of the mail within his hometown of Itzehoe, a town of about 30,000 residents near Hamburg.

Giersch ultimately sold control of the physical delivery operations and started on a new venture he called "hybrid mail". The idea is to combine the relative security of physical mail delivery with the speediness of email. A sender's document is scanned into Giersch's system at its origin, transmitted electronically to a G-mail office in the destination city, printed out at the other end and hand-delivered to its recipient. Giersch also offers users a "secure" gmail.de address, which they can obtain only by verifying their identities with a passport or other official ID card a far different business model from Google's Gmail, he said.

In 2000, Giersch registered "G-mail... und die Post geht richtig ab" with the German trademark office. He was still investing in and developing his hybrid mail service four years later (in Germany, one has five years after registering a trademark to commercialise its use), when he saw news reports that Google planned to launch a Web email service named Gmail. Google's email service debuted in April 2004.

"Knowing Google is very powerful, I liked it at the time; I Googled myself everyday. I said, 'you know what? I want to call these guys,'" Giersch said in a telephone interview. "I did my MBA, and I know what a big company is looking for, and that is international growth. I knew sooner or later they would go to Germany."

After rebuffing his initial attempts to talk over the situation, Google eventually offered to buy the German trademark rights for $250,000, Giersch said. But by then, turned off by what he deemed "arrogance" on the search giant's part, he had decided never to settle. When Google started offering

Its obvious that most of the people are sensible enough to get a trademark or patent for their works so that others cannot steal their credits in future. This is not gonna be a big set back for google, they are the big cash guys, they'd buy it what ever price is quoted.

Lets wait and see whats gonna happen out there.

interesting... but i want to side with google for some reason, the german guy has his rights, but $250,000 is more than enough for his trademark rights... i think at least... but i dont know what the estimatied value of the domain is... if you do know reply...

  3. Recently J.k. Rownling (Author of Harry Potter Books) took a trip to New York, and coming to america, se was fine carrying somthing on the plain, but coming back she was not alloud to!
Any guesses what that item was?

Well, it was the ENTIRE harry potter book 7 that she has written so far. she said she will travel no where without it because she simply cant trust it aywhere else.

They continuiously refused to let her go on the plain with them for some reason, i mean its just paper.. anyways, after talking with the manager and explaining what it was, they agree'd to let it go on the plain bound up in bands and bags.

she said she would not have gotten on the plain unless she had it on her carry-on-bag.... i wouldn't either!

wow... iwonder why security would be so tight that they wouldnt let a book on, and its J.K. Rowling, if she is traveling she is obviosly going to have that book with her and want to take it with her so y would they stop her... sounds like there was a guy with his head up his...

  4. In my opinion the vista gui in appearance kicks butt, but in the way it works, and system resources its just not worth it.

Bill gates just wants you to spend your money on computers and nothing else!! the faster he keeps moving the faster we have to move to keep up and that = ($)($) kerching!

I think if they could make the vista gui run on specs like the xp can run on it would be almost perfect even though aero is infact utterly useless it looks good from what ive seen! And i do think it looks a little like mac and a little like linux with everything being so round, mac and linux have always used rounded edges and such like everywhere, windows has been stuck in the box so to speak with square edges so now they copy linx and mac, whatever next...maybe they will have a tabbed browser like everyone else...oh wait...lol

It still looks good though :)

i've been using vista and i do really like it all in all... but the only problem is it dosnt realize the amount of ram I have so it has dissabled aero since i used to not have enough and now i do... but at the moment i am using XP because i downloaded the RC1, but i havn't installed it yet, i need to. Oh and sadly bill gates will be gone soon, however it may change the way microsoft does stuff, as to compete more with mac so that at least it seems better at every thing, not just productivity

  5. thats really quite sad because those do have a few improvments that would have been really nice for the last release, but oh well... anyway i wonder how do you think this will compare to when microsoft releases zune? iPod is a bit more established and looks really cool, but i wounder what microsoft will use to combat that.

  6. wow... i guess i was kind of ruined by other crappy hosts... i had tryed so many that just failed when i decided to try my last one which was Xisto, so i signed up got ten credits, the i posted an application for an account... and it worked, a little while later i got an email that i was in and how to login and I did... i was happy, but mainly releved that it was finally finished

  7. Seriously.. If IE had tabbed interface, I would prefer IE than Firefox. Most of the sites dont show up properly on firefox. And the best example is Javascript effects. Check out Xisto forum on IE and Firefox, you will know the diffrence

I know what you meen, and if you would like to use IE 6, but still have tabs then you can use the Windows Live Toolbar. It adds tabs to IE6, the only broblem is that to use it you have to leave the toolbar out, which i personally don't care for, so i use firefox.

  8. This is really freaky, deleted text are still being able to be located. I would never store any passwords on my phone. But shouldn't all the data be found in the SIM card and not in the phone itself.
Does anyone have any idea how this reset procedure work? I am selling off my phone in a month's time and it would be great if they are not able to locate my data in the phone.

The best thing to do would probably be to go to your wireless carier and tell them you want it completely reset, to sell. They have the technologie to do it the right way... also if you have a blackberry delberitly enter your password incorrectly 11 times and it will self destruct on the inside... its all in that CNN article

oh and i am just guessing, using logic i would think that "reseting" your cell would be like formating your hard drive, pointless you are just changing a log, thats all, and i would assume the same for a cell phone, since the cell phone acts the same as a comuter, just a much small amount of everything, but still the same

  9. Im stickin with good olD Norton system works, it reliable enough.

Sorry but Nortan is just too slow and last time I relied on it I got viruses where I can run avg, and barely notice its there, and I have blocked a few viruses with it, but I have never gotten one cause it always catches it befor it is executed

I don't like norton. it slows down your computer and it takes forever. i like a sleek new zon alarm! i even went in an custimized it to fit my super human needs!!Either way its an anti virus and if you have the time/want something your familiar with then stick with what you've got.

zone alarm is good, but it is also too needy, i say avg or avast, both are free and can do as much or more as those two

  10. wow, this is cool and all but i tried using this add-on in firefox tha alows you to put files onto gmail, but it did it using ftp, but the only problem was that if you used it you may have trouble attaching files, is it possible that this would happen with gmail drive, and is this against gmail's tos?

  11. hey anyoneHas onyone gotten this email.I just got this ,It tells me that I have won $500 cash prize at random and gmail will transfer it to my paypal account. But when I click on the link in my email,it take me to the page that I can put my paypal account ,my name and get the money, but unfortunately,I'm not a premium gmail game account,so it again tells me to sign up for premium gmail game account which cost money. It also tells me that I have to use E-gold account to buy premium gmail game account which I don't have one. When I try to use paypal account to buy it ,then they force me to pay through E-gold account.

Is this a scam? Can anyone tell me anything about this?

Ps. When I look at their email address.I saw their email address is admin@gmail.com which never exist.Because I try to reply it ,my email doesn't go through. And I check it again I see the gmail address never exist less than 6 letters. So what's going on here?

its a scam... lots of people are trying to take advantage with gmail since its newer and has had a-lot less spam so when a email that looks like maybe spam or may legit, you get interested, becasue you hadn't ever gotten something like it before through gmail... but yes it is a scam

  12. It basically means you can have username@yourdomain using Gmail as your interface. Login and all the services that Google can offer are accessable using any browser but the email sent will be from your domain address. This wasn't possible in the past since only "reply-to" was the only thing you could have made the modification.
With this service your "from" address will show yourdomain name while using the now familiar Gmail interface.

What's also clever is that you can create multiple identity email address. This means I can receive and retrieve other POP email and use different identity to send to appropriate receiver. It's very similar to Outlook's "sub-accounts" with different email profile. However, when looking under the full header, it still says google or gmail from full send path.

Xisto Corporation already has this service and I must say I am getting ready to switch over from Yahoo! to Gmail.

saddly i can't use all of their services because my mail exchange servers are messed up because I use a subdomain cover for forwarding,so I have to use my Xisto host for it which also sadly is currently suspened because I hvae been away from the computer for a few weeks and was not able to post at all... well i do really like what I can use with google.j thnx for pointing it out

  13. A world without religion?

I was thinking about it and thought, you know, i think it would be better. Here are my reasons.

The biggest change in the world would be less wars. Think about it. Most wars are start because of religion. One of the reasons people came to America back in the 1700s was because they wanted freedom of whatever religion they wanted.

Another great thing that would come about it would be that laws would be made on what is actually bad. For example, the most well known mostly religious law is the banning of gay marriage. I don't know if they would accept it or not, but the descions would be for science and what could hurt people.

Another would be no one would discrimanate about religions and whats better. It would be just one more thing people could hurt feelings about.

There are more, but i want to save it to keep the topic going.

Remember i'm not saying that religion in bad, i am just saying i think the world would be better. Please don't say stuff like," Well people would kill each other because the bible tells them now they can't." We all know, or most of us, that people can still follow basic human rules such as killing people. Just think if people would wake up and forget about religion.

Valid point but i think we need the hope... the hope that somewhere there is more, something better, at certain times somepeople absolutly have amazing lives and say they dont need something better, but somepeople's lives are still ok, but not amazing, and in religion each religion has some sort of better life, or afterlife that somepeople use to make them feal better if someone they know passes, or for example me, if I am feeling rather low or over worked and stressed, or just want to get something off my shoulders I would pray and I would feel better thinking that someone, something out there can hear you. also we all have those basic humanitarian rules but there are more through the bible, and teachings all over the world thatmake life easier for us, also it is nice to have that thought that we were created at one point all of a sudden and that there is a point to us being here

  14. Huh i guess this could be a blessing for some people but for those seeking privacy, like an investiagtion company with high profile cases that are for the eyes of the person or group seeking the imformation, this can be a major problem, i knew that os-s did that but i guess i haddn't taken the time to put two and two together and actually relize what was happening, but its really no problem for me myself

  15. wow I guess your so busy doing stuff on the internet that you dont realize what life would be like without... i mean everyone and i mean everyone would have a lot more time on there hands... but without the internet being such the huge thing that it is we might not have cell phones or ps2s or advanced computers for that mater... people wouldn't use computers on a daily basis anymore, think about when you get on your computer well for me i get on the internet, come here or a different forum or some social network, then i log onto aim and talk to friends, then i might access files from school, maybe listen to some streaming music, download a program any of those things, anymore for alot of people its not do I have a big fast computer its is my internet fast, i dont care if my computer has 300 gb of space its not like i use it, I use the internet and other servers also think about games now you xbox live and flash games and wow and runescape... all of these rpgs and such that would have ever been invented because there would have been no jnetwork... but then you think at some point in time something at least simalar to the internet would have been created... I kindof also wonder what happened to get the internet in the first place relly did it just start from small networks who felt like connecting every computer in the world to another and how did the name "internet" come about anyway... was its just luck? I have never really thought about it befor but now that I do I kind of wonder how in the world did it come to this... one step at a time

  16. There's a certain software make by Microsoft that scan your hardware to see if its Vista compatible and I've tried and it says my system is lack of one wddc or something card...
btw, does all of those vista installer the same like i can use the one you've installed as long as I enter my own product key? I miss the downloads provided by Microsoft but i have the product key assign to me and I'm now looking for the installer itself? anyone has any idea how to get it?

yes, if you have a key, and any of the installations (Realeased By Microsoft) , you should be good, also you can probably use any of the keys that they gave oiut, because I have two and I have used each one two or three times and have had no problems. for the installer you can go to a bit torrent site and download it, but it may not work the best, I do have it on dvd, I may be able to burn a copy and send it to you.

  17. Does Windows Vista allow most of the running and compatible programs of windows xp to conform to Vista? I mean does those program that works on Window XP works on Windows Vista too and runs properly?

Mostly, sometimes it requires a little work to get certain programs to work, yow just have to go into that programs properties, then go to compatability, then set it to the OS that it usually runs on. also if say a new program is installed that is not compatable, windows will detect that it didnt correctly install and ask if you would like to use the recomended settings, which usually works, and if that doesnt work chang the compatibility properties even farther to run in adminastrator mode and u should have no problems, and as that other guy said it does use alot of reasources and has alot of notifications from its firewall, but it is good if you got programs that you dont want to be running like viruses, so you can just click no. Oh that guy cant have an RC because the RC1 isnt out yet. so he has Vista Beta 2 which is still a BETA so that means it will be clunky and be a naggy, but that doesnt mean that when it is actually released to the public that it will be that way, so dont make any asumtions yet, the RC isnt even out.

  18. OK here is my take for what it's worth:

    WINDOWS VISTA SUCKS **bottom**

    Here is why:

I have been playing around with it for about a week now and the experience was definitely NOT WORTH IT.

    INSTALLATION:

In pure style Micro$oft: cryptic, frustrating, exceedingly long.

It starts with a welcoming screen that asks you what you want to do (install, upgrade, make coffee, have a bj)
Of course since i am installing it from the DVD image off the Micro$hit website and booting the pc with it, the only option available is that of installing from scratch! (ludicrously unnecessary waste of my patience to let me read all that crap to find out I CAN DO ONLY ONE THING!!)
I chose to format the C: drive and of course i expect the next thing would be to see some message like "Formatting Drive C:" or some *BLEEP*... NOTHING.

I am almost on the verge of losing my patience because the freaking interface is not changing and then i realize at the last minute (with no feedback whatsoever) that the NEXT button which was supposed to give the OK and proceed with the installation is still there as if i never even clicked it. I hate sloppy seconds.
I click it again and finally it starts... I WISH! Or better... it DOES start without even telling me anything!

The only thing barely alive on the screen is a freaking green bar advancing at 0.0001 microns/hr!
At this point i assume that it's probably:

    - checking the drive C for integrity,
    - formatting the drive, copying the files,
    - sending a few e-mail to Redmond with my picture profile,
    - getting off on my porn collection on my storage drive,
    - buying Amazon.com stocks with my personal Humpa Lumpa's credit card,
    - registering the installation,
    - creating the menus,
    - saving settings,
    - stalling for time some more,
    - telling dirty jokes to another computer in Palo Alto,
    - and finally welcoming with the screen where i can finally type my name, the name of the computer, have my **bottom** prints taken (for Bill's personal gratification), and finally accessing the desktop!

Now here it comes the scary part

    USING THE DAMN THING:

You couldn't believe what the file manager (or whatever the hell they turn it into) looks like even if i told you!
What a mess!! It makes my head spin, along with the wacky interface, as if i was standing in the middle of a busy highway at noon!!
It takes me at least 20 minutes to figure out that there is no UP or DOWN arrows to climb or descend the folders and the familiar dear old normal folder view (yes, THAT one!) is gone forever... sob... sigh... sniff-sniff...

Where am i? What kind of dream is this? Why, oh why, cruel world!?!

Everything is replaced by these huge freaking huber-icons so detailed i can see the preview of the Micro$oft contract agreement license down to the fine prints! (Yes... i could read THAT part too... the dirty, dirty one.)

Everything moves so slowly... until i begin the slow and painful procedure of...

    INSTALLING THE DRIVERS@#$%*&^@!!!:

Audio drivers: pretty standard stuff, i got a universally known AC97 on board device. I tried every single driver in the universe, and still i had the same result. It sounds like *BLEEP* until i set it to quadriphony... if i try anything like Surround Sound or 5.1 it either crashes horribly (freezing) or doesn't sing anymore... nice.

The internet is the only thing that seems to be working normally. Of course i installed immediately Firefox and Thunderbird (The hell with Explorer, as if i didn't have enough pains in my **bottom**). I got cable and that was my only source of happyness.

WinRAR is not allowed to be installed, only 7Z, no complaints there, except what if i wanted the freaking choice for such a simple software???

Oh and by the way... the hardware is no *****: 64 bit AMD Opteron 1400Mhz, nVidia Quadro 2000, 1Gb of DDR ram and still friggin' slow!!

Photoshop? Maya? Forget about it! I got deadlines damn it!

support for RAID? eh... YOU WISH!
Norton Antivirus? Tried that... freezes the system or refuses to install (nont necessarily in that order)

Screw Windows Vista, i wish i could say screw M$ too but i can't, i still need this piece of *BLEEP* because all the highend software out there only works on it except for a few proud ones like Maya...

So i am going back to Win XP Pro 64 bit (which didn't give me half of the dumb *BLEEP* Vista gave me) and stay with it until M$ either changes its *BLEEP* attitude about treating customers like CRAP or the big movers come up with more friggin' software for Linux which (mark my words) i am prepared to pay double it's worth as long as i don't have to see the Windows logo again!!!

oh and btw... dd you take a look at the official retail prices for Vista? Don't ask... just go look and enjoy the joke!

    I won't buy that for a dollar.

    CONCLUSIONS:

You like M$? Stick with Win2000 or XP Pro, go no further.

You wanna be free? Petition for Adobe, Autodesk and the other guys to MAKE SOFTWARE FOR LINUX!

Took me 1hr to install Fedora Core 5 and use it, run it for 3 months solid after having used Fc3 and Fc4 for two years solid on my crappy laptop. Documents, spreadsheets, graphs, presentations, emails, web surfing with all the bells and whistles, every little thing you M$ whipped pussies do with windows i did it faster, better and without fear of freaking virii, malware and all that other crap! 300 bucks in antivirus software and spyware software??? 200$ in the operating system?? Are you insane?

In my world i prefer to invest in hardware and in software that pays my bills like graphic software and programming packages! Screw OS licenses!

And anyway everybody knows that virii and spyware come from the very same people that claim to make software that is supposed to defend us! Right Symantec and McAfee???

With all those billions worth of market shares they could cure AIDS and feed starving children until they begin developing eating disorders, damn it!

Huh well lets see Vista is a FRIKEN BETA! Give it a break, if you wanted a completely stable os use XP until Vista is ready. If you would have read the liecence agreements and disclaimers you would have known that it is a beta, and that it is for testing purposes ONLY its not something you should be downloading for your primary computer and expect it to be perfect. MS TREATING ITS CUSTOMERS LIKE CRAP??? Pull your head out, you didnt buy it ITS STILL A BETA, you can continue to say all that crap but you just sound more and more like an idiot. Also if it was that slow why dont you get some more ram, you were probably below the system requirements or if you have a 512mb flash drive you can use it to speed up your system, I got one on sale for $12 and my computer, with vista, has no troubles. Before you go off discrediting a program or OS do some research. ITS A BETA. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD ITS A BETA, SOME PROGRAMS AREN'T GOING TO WORK WITH IT, Microsoft didnt block anything, the code just isn't 100% compatible because its a BETA!

  19. Ok well I would suggest to get rid of that last bit of malware you need to get Micrsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (However you have to have a Genuine Version of Windows) and Ad-Aware (Free) (Lavasoft) , which takes about 30-60 secounds to scan which if you do once every week or so should help you out, as far as speed and security differences between the two operating systems is about the same, and XP is slightly more secure with more updates and firewall. Oh and I think someone else also said to use AVG free, definatly a good idea. However it may be annoying to here but in early december Microsoft will be releasing its newest operating system call Vista, I have a beta and the beta is slow, but it is just a beta, so the actual thing should be much faster, infact if you have a flash drive with at least 512mb of memory you can use it to speed up your computer which really does help. If you are going to just get XP or 2000 then I suggest you get XP.

  20. Windows Xp has been around for seems like ages, in the begining it was unstable, like most others in the begining. After a few Service packs, I would say XP came along way. Make way... Windows Vista, the new OS has looks to kill, amzing, the extras that come with it, the ease of use, granted beta mode so software compatability is a B*$%£ and also if you plan on buying it when it comes to the store shelves....plan on buying a new pc because most that are in homes today will NOT keep up with a larger OS and AERO graphics your graphics card better be upto par and a minimum of a gig of ram. Old Reliable to Young and Fast

Actually, I have vista and I have to say its not really that needy of reasources, I dont need a new graphics card to run aero, just a bit more ram, and no you dont need a full gig of ram, you only need 512mb (I have 512md it runs great, and if you ahev a flash drive that has 512md or more vista can use it as a special type of ram, that is deticated to runing the programs that you use the most, which really makes it fast) to run the os and just a bit more (maybe 100mb) for aero, but if you dont have that much aero is just disabled, it still works fine. There is a catch on the graphics card though, you do need a higher preforming graphics card to run windows movie maker and windows slideshow in HD mode. But all in all u dont need a $2000 dollar computer, at Walmart you can get a basic "Vista Compatible" computer for about $345, or a Media Center PC that is more than compatiable for about $778 At the moment you could say vista is slow and will take lots of reasources, but remember its a beta, the first realese candidate isnt due for 3-4 months, now that will be the one that tells you how much reasources it should take.
