I know it isn't only openSuSE that this issue applies to, but currently I am trying openSuSE and I am having problems. I thought I got the hang of using Linux by using the terminal in Ubuntu, but I guess not. Now that I know Ubuntu is a Debian-kernel system, I found out that Debian is probably the most easy to use, and other types of Linux systems are probably harder to use than Debian. Now can anyone tell me the equivalent options on openSuSE for a specific command on Debian GNU/Linux? Here is an example of what I encountered: By default, openSuSE includes the K Desktop Environment (KDE), so that doesn't include gedit. I needed to edit the menu.lst file as soon as I installed the operating system, so I thought I could use pico. Turns out that pico wasn't installed, so I thought I could install pico by typing in apt-get install pico on a root account. Turns out that apt-get isn't available. After several minutes of digging around on the kmenu, I found the Install option, which was similar to Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu. From there I searched for Pico, and installed it successfully. Next issue, YouTube (and other Flash content). Loading up Konqueror, I visited http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and expected Flash to be installed in openSuSE. Wrong. I had to download Flash from the Adobe website in RPM format. After downloading the RPM, I double clicked it and it seemed to install, but Konqueror didn't show any videos. Firefox initially showed a blank gray square but after several restarts of the application it worked fine. Googling around I was instructed to Scan for new Plugins on Konqueror. The only problem with that is that there was no plugins tab on Konqueror's configuration panel. Final issue, shutting down. This should be easy, right? The GUI option had no problem. However, this command doesn't work: CONSOLE sudo shutdown -P 0 It doesn't know what shutdown is!!! How does it expect me to shutdown the computer when running from Konsole? All in all, Linux is great. For ease of use, I would recommend a Debian based system with a GNOME desktop environment. Other ones are just too advanced for the average user to figure out. I still have lots to learn. (I still can not mount, access or read the Windows partition on a regular user!)

The Always use HTTPS option only appeared recently: Before that, authentication (sign in) always used HTTPS, same with Windows Live Hotmail. Of course I prefer using HTTPS, it is more secure and I use it if it is available. I do not notice the speed difference.

Not to discourage you or anything, but maybe you should try experimenting with smaller projects before building a text-based game. Building a text-based game is lots of work and could take many weeks or even months. If you don't know what you are doing, please try out things such as JavaScript and PHP by using various functions that you might use to see how they work.

I suppose you could have the Fight button open an iframe or div or something that calls a Flash "movie" with a 3D scene with controls within the Flash movie. You can program a small close button on the top of the div/iframe with JavaScript to close the 3D scene. This way the whole page doesn't have to reload.

Very nice tutorial. Combined with AJAX on the client-side, this would be a great addition to any Web 2.0 site. Even without AJAX, this is a great way to add interactivity to your site. I have learned many things from reading through your code and I am still learning new things about PHP and MySQL. I haven't found a use for it yet for my own purposes but I hope to soon. Thanks for posting this awesome tutorial.

I would like to point out that Microsoft Word is not a web designing program, it is a word processor. I mean, it can export MSHTML and "clean" HTML pages, but it is not considered web designing software. Now as for iWeb, I have briefly looked at the program and I don't seem to like it much. i prefer to create my pages using HTML and CSS along with other web technologies. Dreamweaver is sort of a WYSIWYG program, but you can still write your own HTML in it. I don't have Dreamweaver at home, I prefer just writing code in Notepad++.

Experimenting even further with the GIMP, I think that this method produces something more like a painting of a vista, not an image of a "real" vista. If I were to produce a painting of a vista, there could be various levels of complexity ranging from basic splashes of colours to pictures with filters, etc.I want to know if I can create something that looks like a vista and not just a painting.

The scrollbar properties are currently IE only properties. They are not part of the CSS 2.1 standard. I'm not sure if there are scrollbar properties defined within the CSS3 specification (it's a bit hard to navigate). I think that web designers should NOT have the ability to alter the colours of the scrollbar because it is a component of the user interface, not the page itself. For example, by changing the theme of GNOME/Linux, the scrollbar, window borders, etc all change colour. Same goes for Windows for Windows programs that are developed with the Windows "windows" (notable exceptions include iTunes and Safari).

I am using a wireless network and Apache isn't set up on either computer. I have also tried creating a symbolic link to the computer running on Vista instead of Ubuntu 8.04, but it still doesn't work. If the remote computer is running Linux, I can access it using telnet or vncviewer, but if the remote computer is booted into Vista, I can access it in Nautilus as well as through LogMeIn. In Nautilus, creating a symbolic link does not work because it thinks I want to put the link on the remote system. But perhaps mounting the remote computer to /media/qdrive would allow me to create a link from there?

I tried doing that. I am successfully added myself to the fuse group, but somehow it still says read: Connection reset by peer. If you read the commands I have tried, you'll see that it is the same one in the guide that you provided (which I followed before posting this topic). Any other commands/ideas? [P.S. Please quote text when you are copying from other sources.]

Looking For A Good C++ Compiler Im hoping to get a URL to get C++
FirefoxRocks replied to bitemytail's topic in Programming
I just use Linux and there is a compiler included (well you might have to apt-get it first) called gcc. Although if you are using Windows then I guess you can use Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition (but that's a bit huge to download) but i would still recommend Linux for programming, especially "software development". -
By following that quick tutorial, I got the sky and ground, the sun and a whole bunch of empty layers. I tried the layer mask thing but it didn't seem to work, things were either washed out or too blurry with the layer mask applied.I'll keep experimenting with this, it seems interesting enough.

Not with a camera, but as in drawing a vista on the computer. I don't have commercial software like Adobe products but I have the GIMP installed on my computer. I was hoping that there would be instructions or something that I can find on painting a vista (on the computer of course).

I am having trouble creating symbolic links to another computer on Ubuntu. This is what I want to do (erm, sort of): ~/Music -> 192.168.0.194/media/OS/Users/FirefoxRocks/Musicor /home/vincent/Music -> 192.168.0.194/media/OS/Users/FirefoxRocks/Musicor even /media/qdrive -> 192.168.0.194/media This is what I have tried: CONSOLE firefoxrocks@ubuntu-desktop: sshfs user@192.168.0.194:/media/OS /media/qdrive and CONSOLE firefoxrocks@ubuntu-desktop: ln -s \\192.168.0.194 /media/qdrive The first one says read: Connection reset by peer and the second one creates invalid links. Is there a command to do this?

How To Change Registered Owner`s Name On Win Xp
FirefoxRocks replied to soleimanian's topic in Websites and Web Designing
There are a few tweaking programs on Download.com that allow you to tweak the Windows XP owner name. By the way, it is perfectly legal to change this setting, but using the same key on multiple computers is not. -
Windows Internet Explorer 7 Vs. Mozilla Firefox 2
FirefoxRocks replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in Software
(P.S. The link on the first post did not work)I still use all browsers, IE less because I'm using Linux more. I prefer Firefox and Opera, they are both good. Konqueror and Safari lack in some areas, and Konqueror is more confusing to use. Opera is very fast to launch, Firefox takes a bit longer (probably because of the extensions and stuff). We should be comparing Firefox 3 and IE 8 now, but IE 8 hasn't been released as a stable gold product yet. -
I don't like it. Google has a reputation for bad (X)HTML and this tool doesn't seem to remedy that problem. Although I haven't actually USED it (I have an account there), I still prefer creating my own HTML pages, which can include PHP and MySQL as well as lots of other advanced features. This may be good for beginners, but it certainly isn't good for web designers and developers. I even think that Dreamweaver is better than this.

As long as you use P2P software legally and have a good antivirus application on your computer (personally I recommend Avast or AVG), you should be fine. Also make sure you have several anti-spyware applications on your computer as spyware is a major problem nowadays.(See my previous reply for more details)

My thought on this is that pages needing POST form data (user logins, not database logins) are not accessible by search engines. This is because robots cannot guess the input required to access the content (passwords, email addresses, etc). If you have links to content outputted by PHP from a database, it should be searchable.

Any Gmail Alternative
FirefoxRocks replied to Ashraful1405241560's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Personally, I think that GMail is great with AJAX and stuff, but an alternative would be Windows Live Mail (you'll need a Windows Live ID) or Yahoo! Mail (I don't like this one much). You can take a look at this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_webmail_providers for a list of cost, features and storage. -
It didn't work on an HTML page, but it worked in an XML document. So I guess with arbitrary text support, regular expressions really are useful.
-
Yes, I believe that the version I'm learning is PCRE regex, or at least that is what I'm testing it on anyways. The PHP page only explained how to use the function a few basic examples like word boundaries and negated searching. I realize that Notepad++ has an option for finding text using a regular expression, but it doesn't work. The site linked above gave a few (commercial) programs that use regular expressions to "save time and work". I guess that knowing how to use regular expressions is very useful in validating forms such as email addresses and stuff, and also as wutske stated, for searching databases.
-
In PHP and many other programming languages, I have heard of this powerful syntax called RegEx, or regular expressions. It allows you to find strings that match a certain pattern. I had to use a regex expression to search for a specific string of text within a block of text once, and someone told me to use a regular expression. The example that they wrote worked, although it was extremely confusing and I didn't know what it meant. http://www.regular-expressions.info/ gives a great tutorial on regular expressions, the syntax and stuff. I'm not sure if this is worth learning. Is it? How often do I have to use regular expressions? They seem to be really powerful? Is it worth the time to figure them out?

The IP address is stored in a $_SERVER[] variable, in this case it is the REMOTE_ADDR variable. So it would be: $_SERVER['remote_addr']; If you want to store that in a variable (which you probably can figure out) and display it, you do this: $ip = $_SERVER['remote_addr'];echo($ip);

I'm sorry if I sound paranoid or offensive, but I am not trusting direct download links from a forum to a ZIP/EXE file. Can you explain how it works or where it comes from? Will it automatically load at startup to "automatically make itself run"? Are there extra components that could be potentially malicious to the computer?Googling the filename doesn't bring up trusted sites for the download, so I'm not so sure about this.
