  13. Notice from jlhaslip: Found this article at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/Plagarism. Warning issued. This is a guide that will explain how to run a lag free game server such as a Counter-Strike: Source server. Please use this guide at your own RISK!!!! Please leave feedback here. Also- you can do these tweaks on any computer, even if you don't run a server. All of these tweaks will boost performance. Specs- I recommend at least a 1.5ghz processor or faster. I also recommend 512 MB of RAM or more. A Pentium 4 isn't much faster than a Celeron, but a Celeron is fine as long as you aren't expecting to run a 20 player server with no lag. If you are short on memory such as 256MB of RAM, it will run, but it may lag when more and more people start joining. I recommend Windows XP Pro. I know all of you are thinking, why not use a Server Edition or 2000? I like Windows XP Pro because once its tweaked, it can run very fast. In addition to that, it is very user-friendly unlike Linux or Server Edition for the n00bs out there. Here are the specs of my server: 1.06ghz Celeron 512 MB PC133 RAM Windows XP Pro It runs around 9 players without any noticable lag. The next thing that you want to count into detail is the FSB (Front Side Bus). You want a high FSB. Front-side bus is the speed at which the CPU communicates with RAM memory and the motherboard chipset. My server has a very slow FSB, at 400mhz. Most new Penitum 4 computers have a 800mhz FSB. The more you have, the better. I would say you want a minimum of 400mhz FSB. The new 64 bit AMD processors have the FSB built into the chip, so any 64 bit AMD processor has plenty of FSB. If you can afford a 64 bit processor, get it. Many servers run RAID. RAID is when you have 2 hard drives, and you put them togethor for a performance increase. This may not be a great performance increase on SRCDS though, you will not notice much of a difference. If you would like me to review your specs and tell you how many players your server will run, please fill out the form here.Running a Lag Free Half Life 2 Server: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internet- In addition to having a somewhat fast computer, you also need a fast Internet connection. I only recommend cable/anything faster (I recommend DSL if it has a high upload rate- see chart below for more info). Don't use wireless due to the slower speeds and sudden disconnection if there is an interference anywhere in the house. Since you will be on a network, (unless you are using the server on the same machine as you play games - I don't recommend!) try to keep as many people off the Internet as possible. If less people are on the network then more bandwidth will be available. DSL can be faster in some ways than cable, but, from experience, I do not recommend it. Down Up Cable 200 kbps-30 mbps 128 kbps-3 mbps DSL 144 kbps-8 mbps 128 kbps-8 mbps As you can see, cable has a far faster download rate. The advantage to DSL is that it has a high upload rate. When running a server, you want a high upload rate. Compare your cable/dsl companies upload rate. The more the better. DSL can be better than Cable in many ways. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tweaks- Its time to tweak Windows XP! The following tweaks will improve your Windows performance. Before you edit the Registry, please backup it up by opening "regedit" from the run menu. Then select "File" and then "Export". Make sure you choose the "all" button for the export range. It doesn't really have to do with a server, but it makes navigation easier on the computer. 1) Open "My Computer" 2) Click the "Tools" menu and select "Folder Options" 3) Uncheck the first box that says "Automatically search....." 4) Click Apply and then OKE) Checking for Signed Drivers can reduce crashes. 1) Go to "Run" in the Start menu 2) Type "Sigverif.exe" in the blank box 3) Click "Start" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F) Turning off Nonessential Windows Services can greatly improve performance. 1) Go to the "Control Panel", then select "Administrative Tools" 2) Select the "Services" icon 3) To disable a service: right click it, and select "Stop" 4) Here is a list of nonessential services: Application Management Clipbook Error Reporting Distributed Link Tracking Client Help and Support Indexing IPSEC Messenger Remote Registry Service Telnet Windows Time WMI Performance Adapter (Visit http://www.blackviper.com/ for more information on what services to leave on or to stop) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 3 G) Defragmenting your hard drive puts files into order; which makes the hard drive faster. Make sure to do this weekly. 1) Go to "My Computer" 2) Right click on the hard drive that your game server is installed on 3) Go to "Tools" 4) Click "Defragment Now..." 5) Click "Defragment"Running a Lag Free Half Life 2 Server: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Page (page 4) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- H) Setting the CPU priority for a game server makes the server #1 on its list of things to do. (It makes it faster) 1) Press "Ctrl-Alt-Dlt" 2) Select the "Processes" Tab 3) Find your server name. For a Counter-Strike: Source server, the Service is called "Srcds.exe" 4) Right click on the server name 5) Click "Set priority", then select "AboveNormal" (note: you must do this every time)Previous Page (page 2) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J) This tweak lets you overall boost your performance. (Tweaking the Swap File) You need 256MB of RAM or more to do this. 1) Select "Run", then "Start", and then type in "msconfig.exe" 2) Select the "SYSTEM.INI" tab 3) Add "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1" under the "386enh" section 4) Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- K) This tweak will decrease boot time and make XP A LOT faster. 1) Go to "Start", then "Run", and then type in "Regedit" 2) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters 3) Double Click "EnablePrefetcher", set it to "Decimal" and put a 3 in the box 4) Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You may also want to do an error-check every once and a while also.If you do not want to do this everytime, you can get a batch file that automatically sets it to run at AboveNormal. You can download a copy of a batch file here. Note- you have to edit the batch file to where you server is located, maxplayers, etc.... You can edit it by right clicking on the file and clicking edit. Once edited, you can run this batch file from anywhere on your computer, it does not need to be in the dedicated server folder. The batch file will automatically start the dedicated server.I) This tweak lets you fine tune your memory for better performance. You need at least 256MB of RAM to do this. 1) Go to "Start", then "Run", and then type in "Regedit" 2) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management 3) Double Click "DisablePagingExecutive", select "Decimal" and put a 1 in the blank. This allows windows to keep data in memory instead of paging sections of RAM to the hard drive, Click OK 4) Double Click "LargeSystemCache", select "Decimal", and put a 1 in the blank. This allows XP kernal to run memory (improves system performance a lot). Click OK 5) Create a New "Dword" by right clicking in the "Memory Management" Folder. Once the "Dword" is created, name it "IOPageLockLimit". Double click it and select "Hexadecimal", put a 4000 in the blank if you have 128MB of RAM, set it to 10000 if you have 256MB of RAM, or set it 40000 if you have 512MB of RAM or more. This tweak will speed up your diskcache. Click OK 6) Reboot for changes to take effect -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- L) I recommend updating to Service Pack 2 because it disables some services that aren't required. You can get Service Pack 2 by doing an update. Since Service Pack 2 has a firewall, you need to set your server.exe file to be a firewall exception. 1) Go to the "Control Panel" 2) Select the "Windows Firewall" icon 3) Select the "Exceptions" tab 4) Click the "Add Program" button 5) Select "Browse" and navigate to your server.exe PAGE 4 M) This tweak will disable even more Windows visual enhancements that cause a slow interface. 1) Go to the "Control Panel", select "System" 2) Navigate to the "Advanced" tab and Select "Settings" underneath "Performance" 3) Select the "Adjust for best performance" bullet 4) Click Apply and OKRunning a Lag Free Half Life 2 Server: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Page (page 5) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- O) This tweak will improve the FPS (frames-per-second) that the server puts out. Most servers put out around 99 FPS, the handy application will make that FPS go past 300 FPS. When the server has low FPS, the players on the server will lag and their ping will be extremely high. The more FPS the server has, the quicker it can render frames- which in the end will make it much faster. You can check your server's FPS with the rcon command of "status" 1) Download the following program here 2) Launch srcdsfpsboost.exe 3) Minimize screen 4) To exit this program, maximize the screen and press any key followed by enterPrevious Page (page 3) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q) Set the heapsize- This tweak allows the srcds.exe to use a exact amount of memory. (great performance boost) 1) Click right on the icon that you use to start your dedicated server 2) Find the target box 3) Go to the end of the line, and add -heapsize 4) After -heapsize add the following numbers for the amount of RAM you have: 128MB of RAM- 16384 256MB of RAM- 65536 512MB of RAM- 262144 1GB of RAM- 524288 2GB of RAM- 1048576 So if you had 1GB of ram, it would look like: -heapsize 524288 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- R) TCP Optimizer- This program optimizes your internet so it can be the fastest it can. This is a program that you run, it requires no installtion. I have tested this program, and it works great. 1) Download the program here. 2) In the network adapter selection area, select the network adapter you use to connect to the internet 3) At the top, select your internet (Cable, DSL, Dial-up) 4) At the bottom, click Optimal Settings 5) Click Apply Changes 6) Click OK when asked to rebootYou may also want to do an error-check every once and a while also.P) This tweak will reduce the CPU strain that SRDS.exe makes. 1) Click start, run, and type in regedit in the box 2) From the drop down menus, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 3) Navigate to SYSTEM 4) Navigate to CurrentControlSet 5) Navigate to Control 6) Navigate to PriorityControl 7) Click right inside the white box and select New-> DWORD Value 8) Type IRQ8Priority in the box 9) Click right on the new DWORD IRQ8Priority 10) Click Modify 11) Type 1 into the Value data blank 12) Click OK and close out of the registry editor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- S) Improve NTFS Performance- Speed up your hard drive. 1) Click start, run, and type in regedit in the box 2) From the drop down menus, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 3) Navigate to SYSTEM 4) Navigate to CurrentControlSet 5) Navigate to Control 6) Naviagte to Filesystem 7) Click right inside the white box and select New-> DWORD Value 8) Type NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate in the box 9) Click right on the new DWORD IRQ8Priority 10) Click Modify 11) Type 1 into the Value data blank 12) Click OK and close out of the registry editor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- T) Unload .dll's to Free Memory- Free up memory left by programs that were closed. 1) Click start, run, and type in regedit in the box 2) From the drop down menus, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 3) Navigate to SOFTWARE 4) Navigate to Microsoft 5) Navigate to Windows 6) Naviagte to Current Version 7) Naviagte to Explorer 8) Click right inside the white box and select New-> DWORD Value 9) Type AlwaysUnloadDLL in the box 9) Click right on the new DWORD AlwaysUnloadDLL 10) Click Modify 11) Type 1 into the Value data blank 12) Click OK and close out of the registry editor PAGE 5 Programs and other tips- A) Always update Windows. You can update Windows by visiting the following website: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ a Lag Free Half Life 2 Server: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Page (page 6) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous Page (page 4) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spyware and Viruses WILL slow down your server. I prefer using Norton Anti-Virus to Remove Viruses, and Microsoft's Spyware Application to remove Spyware. AntiVir Virus Scanner (freeware virus scanner): Click here to download Spybot- Search & Destroy: https://www.safer-networking.org/ Make sure you update all programs so you can ensure you are getting the latest files to scan your computer. Always scan your computer for Viruses and Spyware weekly. I also like to clean the registry of entries that are not in use, for that, I use Powerhouse RegSupreme. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C) Make sure your drivers are up to date. Please visit your computer's manufacturer website for more information on obtaining new updated drivers. http://www.compaq.com/cpq-country/overview-full.html http://www8.hp.com/us/en/home.html http://www.gateway.com/worldwide/ http://www.dell.com/en-us/ http://www.ibm.com/us-en/ You also want to update your computer's chipset drivers also. I'm not going to go over this because it is different for every computer. If you wish to find out more about updating your computer's chipset drivers, visit your computer's manufacture website. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D) Always minimize the server screen because it uses less RAM when minimized. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E) Running Clean Disk gets rid of files such as temporary Internet files that can slow down the computer. 1) Go to "Start", "Program Files", and then "Accessories" 2) Select "System Tools", then Select "Disk Cleanup" 3) Click "OK" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cooling- I also clean my server about once every 3 months. Dust can slow down fans, which will make your computer warmer, leading to be more sluggish. I usually get a can of air which you can find at Office Depot for $4.99. I just use it all around the computer, getting dust out of it. Make sure you have enough fans in the computer also. Don't go overboard though, just because you have 10 fans doesn't mean its going to stay cool. You need to have the fans placed correctly so that air is coming in from the front, and going out the back. Pay attention to which part of the fan blows and sucks. You want the front sucking in air, and the back blowing out air. Do NOT create a vacuum where you have the fans in the front and back sucking in. PAGE 6 Cvars: Having said all that, and once your hardware is in place, the most important lag free tips are your cvars. You will find the following cvars in your server.cfg file. If they aren't there, you will want to add them. sv_minrate should be set to 5000 (setting it to 5000 will make dialup users not be able to play) Set minrate to 0 if you want dial-up users to be able to play on your server sv_maxrate should be set to 9999 sv_minupdaterate should be set to 13 sv_maxupdaterate should be set to 30 If you have alot of bandwidth, set sv_maxrate to 0. When it is set to 0, it allows unlimited bandwidth. According to the Valve support page, the maxplayers should be set around the following: 128K uplink = 2 players 256k uplink = 4 players 320k uplink = 6 players 512k uplink = 9 players 768k uplink = 14 players 1024k uplink = 19 players 1140k uplink = 21 players 1708k uplink = 32 players In order to find out your uplink, click here and run the test.
  14. I have alot of great info on how too run a none laggy server i will post some right here This Manual is Windows CounterStrike Only! Thats CSS and the new released DOD! Trizik Guide Here! I will not be able to give support anymore! Subjects: - Guide installing CounterStrike Dedicated Server - Downloading or making a Server.cfg - Making a Message Of The Day (MOTD) - Changing Mapcycle - RCON guide and MOD links - Adding bots to your server - Firewall/Router Settings - Lag issues - Other Links First, create a folder where the files for the dedicated server will be located. In this manual, C:\srcds will be used as the server directory. Verify 1 GB of free space is available on the drive. Next, download the HLDS_UpdateTool from here: HLDS_UpdateTool Copy this file where you like. Doubleclick it and follow the instructions. The destination folder to use is: C:\srcds. Some files will be copied to this directory when finished, one of them is: HldsUpdateTool.exe Doubleclick on HldsUpdateTool.exe, so it will update itself. We will be using this file in the next sections. Download the Server Files Now, we download the server files that are required to run the server. Depending on your connection this could take from a few minutes to a few hours. If you have HL2 already installed, then there is a quicker way to get the files, click here if you want to know how, if not then proceed... The next section need to be completed via the DOS command line. To go there do this: Click Start, then Run, Type in cmd then click the OK button. Once the Command Prompt is up, we need to change directory by typing this in the command line: cd C:\srcds First watch how fussy the command line can be (watch the whole video or you might download 600mb of what you dont want!) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Or go to Bones site and watch more little video's like above! Bones Site!. Now type the following in the command line or copy from here: hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir c:\srcds This will download all the server files needed to run a Standalone Source Dedicated Server. Once finished retrieving the files, this text will appear: HLDS installation up to date If it's not working the first time then try again, again and again From time to time you will need to update your server, just follow the same steps to do this or make a batch file. Creating a shortcut to run the server Go to your C:\srcds directory. Find srcds.exe Right click on it and create a shortcut. Now right click on the newly created shortcut and go to properties. Click on the tab shortcut, in the Target line you see probably the following: C:\srcds\srcds.exe Now we need to add the following behind this line to get the server started properly. -console -game cstrike +ip 213.132.175.152 +maxplayers 20 +map de_dust Of course you fill in your IP (whatismyip), you can change the maxplayers and which map you want to start the server with. But dont forget the space between srcds.exe and -console! So the complete line would be like this: C:\srcds\srcds.exe -console -game cstrike +ip 213.132.175.152 +maxplayers 20 +map de_dust Click OK when finished. Start the server All you need to do now to start your server is doubleclicking the shortcut you created. If you encounter a problem, try deleting the +ip 213.132.175.152 in the shortcut or try reading this thread. Creating a server.cfg Now that you have your own server its time to give it a name and the settings you want. That's done with a file named server.cfg In this post as a reply I have posted my server.cfg, just scroll with your mouse and you will find it. Message Of The Day A Message of The Day (MOTD) is the first screen you'll see if you connect to a server. I'll show you how to change this welcome sreen, just scroll with your mouse to a reply I made. Changing the Mapcycle If you want to change your mapcycle all you have to do is open mapcycle.txt. You can find this file here: C:\srcds\cstrike\ When opened you can delete maps or change the mapcycle order. Ofcourse make sure you save your changes. Adminning your Server (RCON & MOD) Now that you have personalized your server, I will try to explain to you how to control your server using RCON. Scroll your mouse and in a reply I made you will find more info about RCON and little info about MOD's. Firewall/Router Settings If you can't see your server in the list or your friends are not able to connect to your server then this could have many causes. One of them is that you're behind a firewall or a router. If your server is behind a firewall and/or you are using a router, you need to open/forward these ports: UDP 1200 (Friends Network) UDP 27000 to 27015 (Gameport) UDP 27020 TCP 27030 to 27039 TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port) Go to the website of your manufacturer if you don't know how to open/forward these ports. Or if you have a router you can go to this website: https://portforward.com/ Here you can find some other suggestions, where you may find an answer. My server LAAAGS! Needforspeed made a very good guide about running a lag free server. You should read it! For CounterStrike most of the settings are changeable in the server.cfg. If you used my server.cfg you can see these settings in the title SET RATES. I found this formula in Drek's thread: bandwidth X 128 / server size = sv_maxrate Example: If you have an upload of 768 Kbps and you want a 24 player server, then the formula goes like this: 768 x 128 / 24 = sv_maxrate 4096 Drek's thread will get you in a direction, but I think it comes down to trial and error. If you experience lag then play with the settings. More Info Keep the following websites in mind, they will give you more info about Source Dedicated Server in the future: http://www.hlds101.com/ http://www.srcds.com/ SERVER.CFG COPY AND EDIT THIS First some info for CS 1.6 ServerAdmins: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have setup CS 1.6 servers or other non-Source servers before then I recommend not using those server.cfg 's anymore, because some commands have changed or are not working anymore! Here you can find a Source cvarlist so you can compare it with your old server.cfg 's or you can use the server.cfg below: Source cvarlist This Source cvarlist is from nov 2004, if you want the latest or if the link is not working, you will have to do the following: Start your server (in console mode), when it's started type the following in the serverwindow: cvarlist log cvarlist.txt A lot of text appears, but you can close your server if you want. In your cstrike folder you will now find a file cvarlist.txt and you can open this with Word, this is the latest Source cvarlist. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's continue with the server.cfg You can find a sample of a server.cfg between the quote lines down below. Some commands may not work anymore after an update and this server.cfg doesn't have all the possible commands, but I tried to give you the most used ones and you can change the complete file the way you want it. Copy and paste the quote text below (without the quotelines!) in a text- or notepadfile and make sure you change sv_region, hostname and rconpassword. Feel free to change any other settings you like or delete the settings you dont need or want. Afterwards save the file as server.cfg in the following directory: C:\srcds\cstrike\cfg\ quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- // Use this file to configure your SOURCE DEDICATED server. // This config file is executed everytime the server changes levels. // This file is made by Lady Racquel, you can visit us @ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ // *********** SERVER & PASSWORD INFO *************** // Change it to 1 if you want a LAN only Server sv_lan 0 // contact & geo 0=US East coast, 1=US West coast, 2= South America, 3=Europe, 4=Asia, 5=Australia, 6=Middle East, 7=Africa and 255=world. // Change the number to the region you live in!!! sv_region 3 // Give your server a name here hostname "Put your Server Name here" // Rcon password is used to give your server orders by using console, so think of a good password rcon_password "Putyourrconpasswordhere" // If you want your server to be private, fill in a password and delete the // in front of sv_password // sv_password "Putyourprivatepasswordhere" // *********** GAME SETTINGS, YOU CAN CHANGE THESE THE WAY YOU LIKE IT *************** // Sets the amount of minutes players are able to buy mp_buytime 1 // Sets the amount of starting money, max=16000 mp_startmoney 8000 // Sets the amount of secs before C4 explodes mp_c4timer 30 // 1 enables flashlight, 0 disables it mp_flashlight 1 // 1 enables hearing footsteps, 0 disables it mp_footsteps 1 // 1 enables falling damage, 0 disables it mp_falldamage 1 // Sets the number of hostages a player can kill before they are booted from the server. 0 is disabled mp_hostagepenalty 0 // TIME, WIN & ROUND SETTINGS // Timelimit is how many minutes for a map. mp_timelimit 45 // When a team reaches this amount of wins (before the timelimit or the roundlimit is // reached), it has won the map. 0=disabled mp_winlimit 14 // When two teams finish playing this amount of rounds (before the timelimit or the // winlimit is reached) the map ends. 0=disabled mp_maxrounds 21 // Round time, in minutes. This is called the Message Of The Day (MOTD) and with it you can give a personal touch to your server and give players info about your server, like if FF is on or off, or some rules. You can find the MOTD in the following file: C:\srcds\cstrike\motd.txt Open this file and you will see text that's used for webpages. So if you know how HTML works you can easily create a nice webpage for your MOTD, just make sure you name it motd.txt and replace the original one in the above directory. It's even possible to show your clanwebsite on the MOTD and use an image or a sound. You'll find examples if you scroll down with your mouse. If you don't know much about HTML then look for this line in the motd.txt: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <body scroll="no"> <pre> You are playing Counter-Strike v1.6 Visit the official CS web site @ ww.counter-strike.net <a href="http://blog.counter-strike.net/ Counter-Strike.net</a> </pre> </body> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can delete the blue text and type any other text instead. With <br> you can create an 'Enter'. If you want a bigger lettertype you will have to use this parameter: <font size="+x">text</font> And if you want to center the text you will have to use this: <center>text</center> Here is an example that will show how it's done: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <body scroll="no"> <pre> <center><font size="+2">Welcome to the <br> -=ViViD=- Clan CS Source Server</font></center> <br> <br> <center>FF and teambalancing are on</center> <br> <br> <br> <font size="+1">Just Behave & Enjoy<font> </pre> </body> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It will create more or less the following output in the MOTD: (without the points ofcourse) quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ..................................Welcome to the ......................-=ViViD=- Clan CS Source Server ............................................FF and teambalancing are on Just Behave & Enjoy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image & Sound If you know how HTML works then you know what to do with these lines to give your MOTD an image and/or a sound. I'm not going to explain in full detail how to do it: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <img src="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; width="356" height="356"> <NOEMBED> <BGSOUND src="http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; </NOEMBED> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And keep in mind not to make the jpeg or the wav to big in pixels or bytes; 100 kb or less is fine. Your Webpage as MOTD It's possible to show your (clan)website as a MOTD. To do this you need to replace everything between: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <head> </head> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- in the motd.txt with the following text: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <head> <title>Cstrike MOTD</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0;url=http://www.mysite.com/index.htm; </head> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And then ofcourse change the http://www.mysite.com/index.htm with your websitelink. RCON & MODS RCON is a very basic and timetaking way of controlling your server, I prefer to use MOD's. A MOD is like an add-on to your CS Source Server. It can give extra options to control your server, like weaponrestrictions, reserved slots or punishments. Because Source is a different engine, MOD's used for CS 1.6 and older are not working for CS Source! The Source engine comes with a built-in MOD and people made some plugins for it, you can find those plugins here. I will not explain to you how to install these plugins, but Bones has made a website with video instruction that will show you how to install one of those plugins; Bones Plugin Video Instruction. It's a very cool MOD to use, but you need to do some reading about it to really make use of all it's possibilities. A MOD that is not yet finished (dec 2004), but looks very promising (so keep this in mind!) for the Source engine is: SourceMod Look in the forums for more info. MOD's can make it easier and give you more possibillities, but if you don't know how to use or to install MOD's, then RCON is probably your best option to control your server. I'm gonna teach you how to use RCON from a Client PC! Client PC = PC you play CounterStrike Source on Server PC = PC you installed CounterStrike Source Ded Server on (Those two can be installed on the same PC!) Rcon Password RCON stands for Remote CONtrol and in your server.cfg you can change the RCON password, look for the following line: rcon_password "yourRCONpasswordhere" Make up your own RCON password and replace it with yourRCONpasswordhere. Sit in front of your Client PC and go to: X:\Steam\SteamApps\youraccountname\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg (where X is the letter of your drive, where you installed Steam) and you will find autoexec.cfg, open this file with notepad. If you don't have a autoexec.cfg, then open notepad, so we can make a new one. Now put the following line in your autoexec.cfg or in the notepadfile you just opened: rcon_password "yourRCONpasswordhere" Ofcourse fill in the RCON password you've used in your server.cfg. Now save the file or if you made a new one save it as autoexec.cfg in the following directory: X:\Steam\SteamApps\youraccountname\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg (where X is the letter of your drive, where you installed Steam) We now have made sure that our RCON password is being autoloaded everytime we start the game CS Source on the Client PC, so we don't need to type it in manually everytime. Console Start your CounterStrike Source Dedicated Server now! We are going to connect to it with the Client PC any minute now. We need the console to control our server, so sit in front of your Client PC and start the game CounterStrike Source. Go to Options, then Keyboard, then click Advanced... and make sure that Enable developer console (~) is enabled. Hit OK when finished. Now press the "~" key (=key left to the key 1) and a console window should pop up now! Commands In the bottom of the console window you can type all sorts of commands to control your server, but to do this you must first connect to your server. So now find your server in the list and connect your Client PC to your Server PC. When connected let's try one command, type this in the bottom of the console window and hit enter: rcon changelevel de_dust2 If all is well the map is changing to de_dust2 Here is a list of commands you can type/use: rcon status will give you a status of your server with a list of players and their ID's/IP's, very usefull, because by selecting and using ctrl C and ctrl V, you can easily copy/paste a name, ID or IP number. The first list of numbers is a list of userid's. After the list of names you will have a list of uniqueid's and the last list is a list of IP's. rcon kickid x (x=userid or uniqueid) kick someone by his userid or uniqueid rcon banid m x kick (m=minutes ban, m=0 means permanent ban, x=uniqueid) example: rcon banid 0 STEAM_0:0:123456 kick, player with the uniqueid STEAM_0:0:123456 is now kicked and banned forever. rcon addip m x (m=minutes ban, m=0 means permanent ban, x=IP) example: rcon addip 45 212.234.555.346, player with the IP 212.234.555.346 is now banned for 45 minutes. In the statuslist you see probably something like this: 212.234.555.346:43621 in order to ban someone using the IP, you must not use the red part in the command. rcon writeid this will write a file with all the uniqueid's that you have banned so far. This is necessary once in a while, because if you restart your server, all your banned ID's will be lost if they have not been written in a file. rcon writeip this will write a file with all the IP's that you have banned so far. This is necessary once in a while, because if you restart your server, all your banned IP's will be lost if they have not been written in a file. rcon removeid x (x=uniqueid) to remove a uniqueid from the file, in other words you can repair what you have done with the command writeid. rcon removeip x (x=IP) to remove an IP from the file, in other words you can repair what you have done with the command writeip. rcon changelevel y (y=mapname) this will change maps, here is a list of original mapnames: cs_italy de_dust de_aztec de_dust2 cs_office de_chateau de_cbble de_piranesi cs_havana rcon mp_restartgame m (game restarts in m seconds) rcon say "blablabla" if you want to talk to everyone on the server, you can use this option. rcon killserver this will shut down your server. The next list of commands can also be used in your server.cfg. If you scroll up with your mouse you will find a chapter called server.cfg and in it some explanations of the following commands... BUT be aware that after every mapchange your server.cfg is loaded again, so every change you've made using rcon is lost in a new map!: rcon mp_timelimit 45 rcon mp_winlimit 14 rcon mp_maxrounds 21 rcon mp_roundtime 4 rcon mp_freezetime 4 rcon mp_buytime 1 rcon mp_startmoney 800 rcon mp_c4timer 35 rcon mp_flashlight 0/1 rcon mp_footsteps 0/1 rcon mp_autoteambalance 0/1 rcon mp_limitteams 0/1 rcon mp_friendlyfire 0/1 rcon mp_tkpunish 0/1 rcon mp_autokick 0/1 rcon mp_forcecamera 0/1 rcon mp_allowspectators 0/1 rcon mp_spawnprotectiontime 10 rcon sv_timeout 40 Unfortunately it happens that after an update some commands are not working anymore, hopefully Valve will change that in a next update. 22. Review Author: CaptainHarlock Back in September, Pandemic Studios brought Star Wars Battlefront to consoles. Now they return with a new game, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. First previewed back in the summer of 2004, this is a game that has been well worth the wait. War has broken out in North Korea. General Song has seized power and the Allied command has enlisted the help of a freelance military contractor called ExOps to aide in the capture of Song and his henchmen. All, of course, for a price! First let's get this out of the way; this game is absolutely nothing like SOCOM. The two games couldn't be more opposite from each. In SOCOM the focus is on team-based missions, special forces tactics with an emphasis on stealth. In Mercenaries, the emphasis is on brute force. There are some instances where stealth can be useful, but there are no team tactics and no command interface. Now, with that out of the way, here's the rest of the review. Gameplay: In Mercenaries, your job is to take down each card of the "Deck Of 52". There are three playable characters with specialties ranging from stealth, to a jack of all trades, to heavy weapons. Each card has the face of one of Song's cronies. During the game you will receive updates as to their whereabouts. Their locations are marked on your PDA. The game does a great job of mixing up the gameplay so that it doesn't feel repetitive. There are a variety of missions ranging from search and rescue to assassinations. For each mission you complete you'll receive a cash bonus (as well as extra money for any equipment destroyed in the process). There's no shortage of work in Mercenaries. There are four different factions (Allies, South Koreans, Chinese, and the Russian Mafia) spread out over a huge map, and depending on how well you execute the contracts for each, your standing will either improve or decrease with them. Kill too many S. Korean soldiers or citizens, and you'll be public enemy #1! Helping out each faction also improves your standing. There are plenty of bonuses and side missions too. There's plenty to do so, believe me, you won't be bored. There are plenty of real world weapons and lots of vehicles to hijack and use. Need a ride? No problem, just grab a jeep or tank! The vehicles are easy to control as well. The soldiers are pretty good shots and they do take a bit to put down, but at no time do they seem superhuman. There are also plenty of support items as you go along. They range from Surgical Air Strikes to different vehicle drop offs and each will become unlocked as you complete different missions. There are also two unlockable characters (for spoiler purposes I won't post them here). There are no multiplayer modes and no online play included. Controls: There is quite literally no learning curve here. This has to be one of the most player friendly games I've come across in a very long time. At no time was I fumbling for the right buttons. The only thing I didn't like was that when you press L3 to go into a crouch, if you push the stick too far forward you won't STAY in a crouch. This is one of the things I wish they did better. But this game is quite literally a dream to play. Graphics and Sound: The game appears to be running on the Star Wars: Battlefront engine. The environments are rendered quite nicely. Everything has a very "organic" feel to it and at no time does anything look too fake. The city portions are especially good, complete with street lights and pedestrians. Just about everything is destructible, but you can't just plow through a building with a tank. There is a great difference in environments across the two maps. Bombed out villages, farms, military bases--there's a lot to see across the countryside. The sound is very good as well. Weapons have different sounds and are distinct from each other. One of the things I didn't like was that the North Koreans don't have a very broad "vocabulary". They seem to repeat the same phrases over and over. But I suppose this is forgivable. Final Score: 9/10 Even with the absence of multiplayer modes and online play this is a game that's well worth your time and money. Though some may shy away from this title because of the lack of online play, they will be missing a lot of great gameplay. Mercenaries takes a lot of familiar ideas and weaves them into a very original package. There's no denying it, Pandemic has come up with a winner here. I must add that i agree everything written in this review. It is an awsome game and great buy Notice from BuffaloHELP: And I must add that plagiarizing is against our forum rule. http://community.us.playstation.com/ Credit deducted.
