Who Is Your Favourite Free Host? whats your fav free host?
M6NEN replied to teartrack_sos's topic in General Discussion
I used 000webhost in the past for testing purposes, and it used to be quite good. However, it looks like they have put quite a few restrictions on their free hosting now. I don't think you can access your MySQL database remotely anymore. It seems they only work with subdomains now, unless you let them host a domain for you. They give you 1 Gb of space but only allow 2 websites to be on there. They also seem to rely heavily on people using their website builder, turning it into a sort of a glorified Wix site. When I went back to my testing site after a period of inactivity, it was gone, so I set up a new one, and most of the functions I needed for testing purposes I could not use anymore, although some of the things are listed among their features, it doesn't mean they all work. (My personal opinion and experience, though). -
Hi everyone. Without a doubt you have all heard about guide dogs for the blind, even dogs for assisting the deaf, explosives dogs, drug dogs, dogs looking for people (dead or alive) stuck under rubble and debris (eg. after an earthquake). Certainly wonderful what dogs can do with their sense of smell and equally wonderful how people can train them to put that gift of nature to good use. I have now learned about a new and wonderful use for a dog, it started in the country where my roots lie, and I am sure many people will benefit from such a dog if the idea takes on. What I am talking about is a diabetes dog. I saw it on the news: the dog in question was a King Charles Spaniel, and he belonged to a 9-year old girl who had type 1 diabetes. Unlike a guide dog for the blind, the dog was not strapped in a harness and held close to the child's side, like dogs and children often tend to do, they were playing in the garden together. However, whenever the girl's sugar limits changed beyond the limits (hyper or hypo), the dog barked, and then the girl's mother came and took her daughter's sugar levels and did what had to be done, according to the situation. And believe it or not, the dog had not been wrong once. The question is: what did the dog go by and how had he been trained? In essence, it was very simple (the principle, at least, doing and achieving it probably took quite a bit of time, effort and patience): the dog was guided by the smell of the girl's breath. For training the dog they had let the child breathe into a plastic bag and used the air from the bag (obviously supplied under different circumstances of her sugar levels) to let the dog sniff it and in doing so recognising the different states the girl was in and to bark if the stuation was not normal. In my opinion, this is a brilliant idea, and I think this should be looked into much deeper, as little children do not always automatically detect the symptoms of a hyper or a hypo (I should know, being a grandfather of a 10-year old diabetic girl), and with a dog being man's best friend, it is good if their playmate can alarm a responsible adult with a minimum amount of panic. I would say, great idea, carry on and bring it on.

Yes, it looks like the bugs have been roned out now. I rolled back to 1803 in October, but thank goodness, none of my existing files were destroyed or wiped out. I did have a few issues with it, though. The main issue I experienced was with the app "Your Phone" where you can see and process your pictures from you Android (and probably IPhone, not sure) directly on your Windows PC/laptop and where you can also receive and reply to your SMSes diretly on your PC or laptop. When I installed 1809 previously I said "Wow, what a great app that is", which it was, had it not been for the fact that nobody could ring my Smartphone anymore. I have been using the updated version for about two weeks now, and the app now works as it should, and to be honest, I wouldn't be without it, and, furthermore, I have not experienced any bugs in the new Windows 10 so far (touch wood);.

Hi everyone. I would like to share something here for the people who are into music, hobyists and professionals alike. I want to introduce a program called Musescore, which cannot only be helpful to composers, arrangers and music copyists for doing their jobs, but which also produces highly professional looking scores, ready to be printed. The best thing of all, it is completely and 100% free. There are of course lots of similar programs available, eg. Sibelius, but that will set you back many hundreds of Pounds/Dollars/Euros, while Musescore does not even lag that far behind when it comes to quality. First of all, you see what you ar doing on screen at any time, you can also hear everything in real-time, as there is a built-in synthesizer, which works with soundfonts, and there are lots of these freely available on the Internet. Of course, Musescore also comes with some pre-loaded soundfonts. There are also some different music font styles, like classical styles, jazz styles, and that will probably expand in the future too. Musescore also has a forum where yo can ask all your questions and you usually have an answer in as good as no time, the good thing is, you can reach the support pages straight from within the program. On top of that, you can also download ready made scores fro one of the parts of their website and there are some very good ones among them. The program is also able to deal with MIDI files, MP3 files, PDF files and to export all the parts of your score separately. One thing, though: at the moment there are still two versions available, version 2.3.2 and the more advanced 3.0.1. I have kept both versions at the moment for the simple reason that version 3 can open version 2 files with no problem, but not the other way round, so I kep both just in case I have to exchange files with people who are still on version 2. The programs are available for Windows 32 and 64 bit, Mac and Linux. They can all be downloaded from this place: https://musescore.org/en/download I will add some screenshots to show what the program is capable of. Anyone interested, have fun! Any questions before you use Musescore support: Fire awy! By the way: I have no affiliation with Musescore whatsoever. air_bach_2_partijen.pdf Zwetende Georges Debruyne.pdf

Who Is Your Favourite Free Host? whats your fav free host?

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I rest my case. It would be a nice thing to end this post with a Latin quote, but I think it'll be best not to bother if I want to keep my nose clean. And it might also be a good thing to cut this post short too. It will be easier (and safer) for me not to go into any long explanations. -

Oops, didn't realise one sentence would matter. Especially since you did it too. -

Yordan, yordan, yordan...... Can't you tell a joke when you hear one? Of course I am not after millions. Billions would suit me better. ? No, but I know, it is all very unfortunate, the small fish are usually the ones that do the big work, while it is the big sharks (literally) who run away with the big pieces of food. Nevertheless, I like doing those kinds of things, like testing out software or testing websites to see if they are working properly etc. just because it interests me and this kind of activity can be very exciting. These are the main reasons, I know you're never going to get rich on helping people, but, there you go. -

Quelqu'un a dit "La vie est belle", eh bien, il est un menteur. ? But, yes, if there is a few millions in it for me, let them roll it out. Not the first time I have beta tested, I have done that with some software, but not really in a case like this. However, and especially the way you describe it, I would have assumed that would have been an "open and shut case". I mean, they put the MySQL engine online, start it up and it should start doing its job. But, honestly, the trouble I have had there, goodness gracious me, and, I should say "the trouble I am still having there". Be honest now, if you pay for something, I think you have a right to demand certain standards, wouldn't you agree? Or is it just me being "Le méchant loup"? ? -
I would recommend the Maian one. I do not use the support one, but Maian Script World has some excellent scripts, every one of them written in PHP, all of them a doddle to install. All programs are available for free, sometimes with a few minor restrictions which the purchase of a licence wil fix (Licences are usually quite affordable). There are also other ways of getting a licence for free, for that check out the Maian website. There is a wide variation of useful scripts, and some of them are free as it is. The scripts go from shopping carts to a support system over a greeting card system, a blog script, a music system, far too much to mention. There is also a very good forum, where the owner of the company (the programmer of all the scripts) is available regularly to help everyone as much as he can with very competent and friendly support. I think it is well worth to check out the Maian Script website, you will not regret it, I certainly haven't.

Honestly, yordan, I am as surprised as you are. But, if you knew me, you would know that I am always the special case. ? (You will read that in another post I placed here a few minutes ago too). I seem to have a special machine that produces faults for me alone. Or maybe I am beginning to get the Calimero syndrome (or complex, no idea) "C'est trop injuste". No matter what, it is a fact that things were going wrong and the support workers at my hosting company had no choice but to admit it as well. Anyway, once I have transferred everything, let's hope all my woes are over. A bientot, mon ami. -
LOL, zorba. No, but honestly, I shall attach another screenshot which might even convince you more. Apart from the "No articles found" in the blue band, I also noticed something else on the left of the Knowledgebase page, see screenshot for that. As you can see, there's not only the fact that no articles are found, but the left-hand menu also says that "No categories exist", so it looks as though we have an empty Knowledgebase. Also, as I mentioned before, when I type someting into the search box, exactly the same thing happens, it comes back with no results. And, in any Knowledgebase, aren't there normally some titles displayed underneath the search box, containing the latest articles or most read articles or whatever the criteria are? As far as I can remember (and that is not far, believe you me ?) that is always the case in Knowledgebase pages. Or maybe I have a special laptop, which bans me from seeing Knowledgebase pages. ?

OK, Thought I'd add my penny too (now that I know a bit more about certain things). I am going to choose Xisto as number 1. Here are a few reasons for justifying my choice: Let me start with my current hosting company first (maybe it is best not to name them, if I should, then let me know): First of all, it is paid hosting, not very expensive, but in light of my current situation I posted about elsewhere, I can do without extra expense. I do get unlimited everything, and I do need quite a bit of space, but Xisto should provide me with enough once I transfer everything. I must admit they have fast and friendly support (which Xisto offers too), and usually they offer you accurate solutions too, except, in one case, I have experienced my MySQL databases do not work properly, so I have had to use a 3rd party MySQL host (free, thank goodness) to make sure everything worked as it should (which, thankfully, it has, so far). They even had to get their senior programmers in to look at the fault and even they have not managed to solve it properly. Also, for a paying hosting company, they do not even allow you remote connection to your MySQL databases, now, is that ridiculous, or is it? At least, at Xisto I know that 1) The MySQL databases are reliable and 2) The remote connection is allowed and works flawlessly (I have just set it up and it worked in seconds). Also, as mentioned before, you can pay for your hosting by posting in the forums, which has a less draining effect on your bank account. ? So, the conclusion is simple: as soon as my payment for this month is used, it will be Xisto 100%, and I will begin to back up and transfer my sites here bit by bit from now on. Get your wagon rolling, Xisto, M6NEN is on his way. ? -
Just trying to demonstrate and prove my psychic powers. Who knows who might need my services in the future.

Well, yes. Good point, really. Fortunately I am reasonably well protected (Firewall and all that stuff). However, you are right, Ethernet and WiFi do, of course have their vulnerabilities when connected to the Internet. That's why I try to be protected to "alien" attacks. ? On the other hand, hadn't I predicted there would be a sequel to our conversation? ? Fret not, lots more to come.

Right, communication with a Windows system is what I wanted. Regarding security, the data do not go outide the walls here, so that should not be a problem. And, Microsoft often recommend things, I think I'd better not finish that sentence. ? Anyhow, for now I have a solution that works, the main objective is to do some experimenting with Linux, get to know it and see it strngths and weaknesses, and in the mean time test out some software which is of interest to me and which has a Linux version too. Thanks for all the help and information, but we'll probably have a sequel on this conversation. Kind regards.

True, but it has been quite a while since I sat in a university hall listening to a lecturer, and the other way too. ? Yes, there are certainly similarities between Linux and Unix, unfortunately, Linux still (although it has become a lot better) relies heavily on command line use. (I can still remember the times when I was cursing the archaic MS-Dos). Well, yes and no, because a very experienced Linux user helped me out, and, thinking back of the link you put down in the previous post, the information there was completely correct, but unfortunately it was for an older version, so it no longer worked for what I had. And yes, the basic Linux install was enough, but some components had to be installed first (via a command line ?). The first thing was nautilus-share (although I am not sure whether that was relevant for my version as it didn't work) and the second thing, which did work immediately was samba, which seems to be especially for filesharing. Just to be clear, I will post what I was advised here (also for the benefits of others who might face the same problems at some stage: sudo apt update sudo apt install nautilus-share This was for nautilus-share. When that didn't work, I got the next bit of advice: sudo apt install system-config-samba sudo touch /etc/libuser.conf sudo system-config-samba With the following instructions: I then rebooted, went to my Windows 10 machine, clicked on "Network", refreshed, and lo and behold, there was the Linux machine in all its glory. Mind you, I could NEVER have done it without that expert advice. The thing is, it probably would have worked the way you explained it too, using PuTTY and/or WinSCP but I am not sure how user-friendly those programs are. No matter what, someone else had advised one of them as well, as you quoted in the previous post. So, they might be worth a lot more than that. ? Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Oh, goodness gracious mee, I do not ABSOLUTELY need MS Word. The thing is, I do have MS Office installed on one of my laptops and it does what I want it to do, but on a Windows PC I have LibreOffice (the one that came with Linux too), and it does as good a job as Mr. Gates' stuff and the two have some degree of compatibility in exchanging files too. Like I said, I am not that familiar with Linux (yet), but I know it goes further than just surfing the net, I know there are some very good programs for Linux like DTP, drawing, video editing etc. which do a great job (on Windows anyway, so I assume they will be no worse on Linux). Oops, was I so unclear? Maybe I was more concentrated on singing the praises of Linux. ? However, yes, filesharing was included, and the main thing was, getting the laptop to be seen on the network. There are 3 laptops, 1 PC and 1 NAS on the network, and on any location I am working, I can see them all on the network bar this one. I know how to connect a computer to the network if eg. it has just been formatted or the OS has just been installed, but that goes for Windows. However, I have had a quick glance at the site for which you sent me the link, I'l have a proper read in a minute, who knows, I might find what I am looking for there. That top bit might help too, although it seems to be for an older version. I'll look into that option too, and then, try to add "Putty", although I am not familiar with the Linux commands, but a bit of research might help. Anyway, thanks so far. I'll go on my merry way to do some exploring. Much appreciated.

Hi everyone, Today I took a certain plunge. I have an old Asus laptop with a small Hard Drive and a small amount of RAM, so I thought to myself "why go through the expense and trouble of upgrading, why don't I put a lightweight version of Linux on there"? And indeed, I had guessed right. I went for Lubuntu 18.10, it installed without any glitches it is on there and although it contains a web browser, a complete Office Suite and good ness knows what else, I have about 90% of Hard Drive space left. So far, everything seems to work flawlessly, I obviously have more testing to do, since I never really worked with Linux before, and to be quite honest, I must admit I am quite ignorant when it comes to Linux, hence my post here. One thing I have not been able to figure out, all my other machines run Windows 10, and so far I have not been able how to connect this particular laptop to the network. It did connect to the Internet without any problem, but the network seems to be a different kettle of fish. I have tried the Ubuntu forum, but that is a kind of nightmare to search. So, if anyone here would be able to help me further, I would be very grateful. I must say, on the other hand, if any one has on old, and hence slow, laptop or PC sat in a corner gathering dust, do not throw or give it away, do not waste mone on upgrading it, try giving it a new life with Linux, and that is advice from a nearly 100% happy first-time user.

Omnis cum in tenebris praesertim vita laboret. (As the Roman poet Lucretius said). The powers that be really seem to think people can live on thin air, as we (my wife and I) have experienced: For nearly seven years, I have been unable to work on medical grounds, mind you, I would have liked it deifferently, given the fact that I loved my job and also the fact that I earned a lot more than what I got on the benefits I was placed on. Anyway, a few months ago, I receive a letter from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) telling me I have to go for a medical assessment. (No problem so far, even though my GP (who knows me and my medical circumstances) already said "why do you still have to be assessed in your condition"?) The only problem is, the Assessment Centre is quite far away and for me it is impossible to travel by public transport (train, bus etc.) due to my limited mobility and a taxi fare from my home to the centre and back would be far too expensive. I remember that, when I had my previous assessment, they sent me a taxi, at their expense, so I assumed it would be the same this time and I double checked. My reply I got was that, if I wanted a taxi I had to ask my GP to fax a letter to them explaining why I needed a taxi (which I assumed would have been the case). Anyway, I went to see my doctor, explained things to him, I had to give him the contents of the letter myself, and it cost me £25 on top of that. From then on the whole agony started. A few days later I had to phone the Assessment Centre myself to check if there had been any progress: nothing, no fax, no nothing. This went on a few times, until I phoned on the day of the deadline for the fax, still nothing, so I phoned th GP surgery, spoke to the doctor's secretary, who didn't even realise the letter had to be faxed ?, in spite of my instructions. Anyway, then the letter was finally faxed and then the struggle went on. I waited a few days and the phoned the Assessment Centre again only to hear the were still waiting to make a decision, so they changed the date of my appointment. The same thing went on four times, every time I had to phone up myself. Until the final time, the day before the assessment, when I was told, "you have to be at the assessment tomorrow (which was a Saturday) and we are NOT providing a taxi". I then asked him how I was going to be able to afford that and he said "Don't worry, if you do not attend you will get a letter which will allow you to explain your reasons for not attending". Anyway, such a letter never came, the only letter that did come was a letter from the DWP telling me my money had been stopped, all this with Christmas around the corner. Once again, phone call after phone call, this time to the DWP, only to be told different things by different people, until I decided to stop going along that route and to launch an appeal. Then the person in the DWP told me that, once they had confirmation of the tribunal for my appeal, they would start paying me part of my benefit until the outcome of the tribunal. When that confirmation came through (two days later) I rang up again, and the employee on the other end told me "you were misinformed, the colleague who told you that was mistaken". So, in the mean time, we have been here, without income for six weeks, with bills and all that to pay, and the DWP? For them it is no problem, their employees and certainly their CEOs don't have to struggle. And, so far, a number of petitions have been going against ATOS (the organisation which runs the assessment Centres for DWP) and the DWP itself because of irregularities, so the people do know a lot of things are not right. So, I have vented a bit of my anger, I could say lots more, but I don't want to crash the forum.

Yes, it came from one of the Microsoft Community pages. I have been searching and looking high and low for two days, and although it may be a "minor" glitch, it is a highly annoying one, hence me posting the solution here. Especially since it is not a solution you would think of yourself. I have even had solutions from the Microsoft Community which made no difference whatsoever. There was only one way I could open my settings, clicking the cogwheel didn't work, neither did the combination "Win + I", the only thing that worked was clicking the speech bubble on the bottom right and choosing "Settings" there.
-
In the mean time, I found a solution, which I will gladly post here too, just in case somebody else needs it, as it seems to be a very common problem in Windows 10: That did the trick for me indeed. After the reboot, I clicked on the cogwheel for "Settings" and up it popped. Thought I'd share the solution for the benefit of others who might need it.

Hi, zorba4 Thank you for your reply. However, there is nothing strange at all with your reply I am not surprised you are getting lots of results, as you are not searching the Knowledgebase but, as I see from your screenshot, you are just doing a search here, ie. the Forum. Very likely you are going to get results then. ? You have to go to the Xisto homepage and go to "Knowledgebase", and, yes, I really typed the word inside the search box. ? Anyway, glad to see someone answered at least. Thanks again.

Hi, I run Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and my Settings only open in one way, namely when I click on the little speech balloon on the bottom right and select "Settings" there. Clicking on Settings from the Start Menu or even the combination "Win+I" do not work. Just to be absolutely clear: IMHO it is not Windows (not this version anyway) that is at fault, as I updated from version 1803 yesterday and the fault was already there, I had to re-install version 1803 from scratch and that is when it started. The upgrade to version 1809 did not change it. I have tried to (as I read this was a possible solution) install Visual C++ and Net Framework, but that did not help. BTW I am posting this because all the posts I have read seem to be quite old. And, please, try to avoid the solution where I have to set up a new account, as I am really dreading this one. Any help will be very much appreciated.

I did try it. See the result in attachment.

Hi. Earlier on I tried to look for something on the Xisto Knowledgebase. I typed in a few search terms and ever time I was greeted with the message "No Articles found". I then decided to look through the articles of the Knowledgebase (you sometimes pick up interesting things on the way), but when clicking on the main title of Knowledgebase I got the same message. Am I to assume the Knowledgebase is empty, or is there some maintenance going on or something? Just curious. Thanks.
