  1. In IE making border radii round is a huge pain, but in firefox and chrome its a stimple css command. Should the CSS command be used, or shouid people try to go for the all supported bit in IE. IE9 will allow border radii, but you'll still have legacy browsers open. Any idea?
  2. Chaos is a very interesting study in mathematics. One of my freinds is a PHD student going for a certification in chaos (as well as a phd in applied math). It's a very cool subject, one that would be nice to learn more about.
  3. Yahoo and bing want a small corner of the market, by this point I'm quite sure they realize they will never catch up with google. Maybe they will, but it's highly unlikely. On the other hand, the ad revenue from even the small section they get may be worth still having the search engine open, though I would have to check on it before I would make any bets.
  4. I want to cheaply put together a server for my fun and enjoyment. The issue, it must be cheap. Any suggestions?
  5. I was wondering what the yahoo page ranking algorithm, and if anyone has a link? I find these algorithms to be cool, if not simplistic and bueatiful. Thanks for the help.
  6. How about the non slate touchpads, the ones with both a touchscreen and a keyboard?
  7. But you must admit pagerank is awesome.
  8. It was an amazing breakthrough to even make the theory, and you can't insult one man for not realizing everything about it. We are still finding information on age old math theorems, so I think we can give him some slack.
  9. They gave that to us in high school, middle school, and possibly elementary school (though I do not remember...). Either way, we all solved it, so I highly doubt the 98% is still correct... If it is, then, that is a very shocking conundrum...
  10. This may be way to broad, in both CS and Math. My personal favorite algorithm may be the PageRank, because it is just so beautifully done, it really is, look at it. But there are many more, graph theories max-flow min-cut, or the shortest distance between to vertices. But there are many others, take number theories algorithm for finding if two numbers are prime to eachother, simply cool. So, what is your favorite algorithm, and why? Do you have a programming example to show us?
  11. I would suggest checking their GODLY page rank system. It's very easy to understand, and it is extremely beautiful. It is the main part of how google decides what to give you in what order. There are also some competency issues that they had to quickly work out, but well worth the look, if you have the time, learn it.
  12. If your interested in a new game, I just tried The Mana World, it seems altogether pretty decent. It's on the package manager, so apt-get the command line if your running a debian sys.
  13. GNU Emacs (22?) is the way to go, or VIM if your that kind of person.
  14. As an undergraduate cs math major, I do quite a bit of coding. I prefer linux because it seems to have a better ability to write code. That is, its more enjoyable, and its much more apt to command line usage. I personally don't really go to the linux gui all to often, I always have an X-Session, but besides Firefox it's usually just sitting there.
  15. Interesting start, but not quite up to spec yet. The PHP MySql is a powerful open source bit, this is to be sure. May I ask what is the major other ways of making a forum, I know there's other database programs, but is this the main way. Also I'd figure there are other programs designed to better handle forums.
  16. Interesting, and I did not know that pre-post, so thanks for the information. I still think that the religious and cultural view should make the burka allowable, not that I agree with it, just that I believe it is so engrained in the culture its almost impossible to convince people that they should take it off. I realize now that it's a sign of respect, it shows the issue when two different cultures clash, who should win out (probably the native). I'm not quite sure, I still think the law is obtrusive, but that may just show my ignorance...
  17. Indeed so, discussion forums are there for discussion. I am an undergraduate Mathematics student (junior, and looking at different Ph.D. programs to go to after). There was a class on chaos theory offered at the undergraduate level, I chose graph theory instead, but I will take chaos at a later date. So I'm very interested in this "attractor" of which you speak.I find it interesting that so many sources point to 2012 as such an important date, one or two may be a anomaly, but the level we have is kind of impressive. Always interesting to see the different thoughts, and thanks for the great response.
  18. Much of 2012 has always confused me, why would people want to think that the world was ending? Why would we want the world to end, and why would we chose to beleive encient ideas that it will end? These questions have confused me, and have forced me to thinking of not even watching movies such as 2012. Can someone enlighten me?
  19. Interesting thought, in geometry we go from the abstract down to the completely defined. In computer science we think of a different form of abstract. The definitions get muddled in the comparisons leading to some off the bat ideas and confusion, its interesting how terms in related field's don't easily meld together. A square is a very basic shape, where a trapezoid is not a basic shape, so your really going in math we are going from unbasic -> basic, instead of the cs basic -> unbasic. Thanks for the thought.
  20. We have to look at what he's thinking, in some ways much of culture has put women in a lower role, and so this could be the thought. But if you think about it, the desert is a harsh climate were you could benefit from not having exposed skin. Believing the Burka is merely an egocentric way of bringing females down is a naive viewpoint in many senses. Do I agree with them, not really, but it honestly is not my place, neither is it his. I give 1 out of five thumbs up, for trying, but not thinking.
  21. To me, personally, atheism is a very fulfilling thing. I believe in science and what it can show, and if I don't have the proof to back it up, well then that is that. That being said, to let my beliefs rely on non-proven faith is not for me, though I respect those who go that route.
  22. In the us, they would look here the call, mam, please don't call us again.
  23. One of my friends truly believe in aliens visiting earth. What I don't get is how why he believes that they helped the Egyptians form the pyramids. Can't he imagine that they had some knowledge of trigonometry and geometry?
  24. Ok http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ that is a link to the new asus slate. I'm guessing (I think i read it), that it will come with a windows based operating system, though I'm sure there is a linux operating system for slate's quickly coming around the bend.
