I was looking for an alternative to GMail. Something that has a sleek interface and has something like 1GB of storage. I dont care about advanced functionality like labeling and searching. Any suggestions?

I reently started learning programmming. I decided to start with web programming. I covered XHTML and CSS, and am learning PHP and MySQL along with JavaScript. I plan to move on to more advanced stuff like AJAX and Ruby on Rails. But I wish to start learning desktop programming as well and I'll either C++, Java, or Ruby. Which one is the best one to start learning? And I am also looking for a book that can give me a theoretical introduction to programming that is not limited to a single language. Something that explains how programming languages work and what high and low level languages are, and how the computer hardware understands the language and stuff like that. Any suggestions?

the best site seems to be skreemr.com and they provide the direct download link in the search result itself so thats a plus. 4shared.com is also great. Its basically a hosting site like rapidshare but allows searching. A similar site is esnips.com but you need to use tricks to download sings from there. DownloadHelper is a Firefox extension that can do it.

Theres a list of all the freeware I use:1. Mozilla Firefox 3: This is the Open Source browser that you all know about. The extensions I use are Glasser (for the vista effect), Adblock Plus (to block ads), remove it permanently ( to remove other unwanted elements in a website), FlashGot (download manager integration), Basics (to add a "new tab" button), all-in-one gestures (this provides mouse gestures but i use it just for the tab scroll feature), DownloadHelper (to download embedded videos from any site), Menu Editor (to cleanup the tools menu and the right-click menu), Greasemonkey ( adding scripts as needed), Userstyles ( to add custom CSS), Hide Menubar (to increase screen real estate).2. Crap Cleaner: This cleans up all kinds of temporary files and broken shortcuts and what not. Cleans up a few 100MB worth of crap every week. It also fixes problems with the registry.3. Foxit Reader: To open PDF Files. I also use WinDJView to open djvu files and Comical to open cbz files4. Free Download Manager: Wondering what this software does?5. IzArc: This is a great archiver that supports all formats like zip, rar, cab and 7z and many many more. Can open archives that open programs deem corrupted. For a program with a better interface try TugZip.6. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack: This installs all the codecs you will need to run any kind of media file. You need to install QuickTime Alternative separately for quicktime movie support. You can use any media player but it provides Media Player Classic if you want to use it. Sometimes Media Player Classic can open files that open media players can't.7. Adobe AIR: This is a runtime that I use for a number of apps7a. Doomi: A simple to do list7b. DestroyFlickr: Flickr browser7c. DiggTop: Shows you the top digg stories including images and videos. And you can view the images and videos in the air app itself.7d. ReadAir: Google Reader on you desktop7e. Snippely: Saves snippets of codes7f. Snackr: This is a brilliant RSS Reader. It is basically a ticker that scrolls across the bottom (or top/left/right) if your screen and you can read all the news you want. Very useful for people who are experiencing information overload. I use it to monitor sites like CNN, BBC, WSJ, etc. where i dont need to read every article.8. uTorrent: To download movies, TV Shows, etc.9. Pidgin: to login into multiple im accounts at once. You might use meebo.com instead.10. Mozilla Prism: To create prisms from websites. That is use websites as desktop applications. So whats you pick of freewares?

Cuil - The New Non Google Killer
Ashraful1405241560 replied to Ashraful1405241560's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Interesting point: Although I thought that Google's Index is 1 trillion, but apprently its not. There index was 8 billiion a year ago so it probably hasn't crossed 120Billion yet. This would mean that Cuil has the largest index ever. They were able to do this because they developed a better way to index the web. That is they have a more efficient method to index webpages than Google. This is extremely advantageous. Because even if they cannot develop a search algorithm to match Google's they could always simply build their index and release it to others so that other search startups can build their engines by using this index. Google themselves used Yahoo!'s search index when they started out.Other search startups have very innovative algorithms (particularly Powerset) but are struggling to build an index. -
In Apple's latest update to its Macbook Lineup, to be released in the last week of September, Apple plans to add multi-touch features that have proved to be popular in its other products, namely iPhone and iPod Touch. Although everything still remains as speculation since Apple hasn't spoken publicly about the planned features. Here's what I heard. Multi-Touch feature is a must but in what form it'll appear remains to be seen. While most people are hoping for a touch screen, it seems that Apple plans to put in a glass trackpad that has multitouch and gesture features instead. This might be more appropriate for regular usage.Other improvements are of course, the macbooks being thinner and having a larger screen and better battery life.

I plan on starting a website soon and I need a good book that can teach me advanced XHTML & CSS. I already kno the basics pretty well, and I want a book that really gets to advanced stuff. I also wish to learn PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript. So I was hooping if anyone could recommend some good books for learning them. PS. For those interested I learned the basics of XHTML and CSS by reading the "HTML Dog" book. And I highly recommend it.

Windows Seven is the next version of Windows that Microsoft plans to release in probably late 2009 or 2010. It is not supposed to have any major changes save for one innovative approach. The OS itself is going to be something like 50MB and wont have any graphical user interface. It will do all the basic work that the OS is supposed to do, nothing more (However this is not MinWin). Microsoft will then install a graphical interface on top of it and then install all the bundled applications and software necessary. The advantage is fairly obvious. Firstly, this is going to allow you (and retailers) to customize your installation down to a T, so you get only the software applications you want installed. Secondly this will allow Microsoft to offer vastly different versions of the same OS for different customers. For example the "Media Edition" will have a lot of resource intensive media applications, while a "started edition" can be stripped down to the essentials. Even better the installer might be able to analyze the hardware and choose the correct amount of "stuff" to install. So Windows 7 will run on even very old hardware. Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, it will allow Microsoft (and maybe even other) to offer "vastly different" user interfaces to its users. For many of us the entire operating system is the interface itself, so it'll b like getting entirely an entirely new operating system. Many other features are also planned, such as Multi-Touch support, but they are still more wise-speculation than fact.

Its the biggest news today. Cuil is a brand new search engine that just came out of stealth mode. Most tech sites are giving it a fairly positive review (particularly TechCrunch) mainly because their search index is huge unlike those of other search engines. Seeing all the hype I tried it out and was rather disappointed. Although the interface is rather innovative and it performs really well for generic search terms such as "Harry Potter", it fails to be a decent alternative for Google when searching for more complicated and real-world search term. Just try searching for ["free hosting" cpanel fantastico].Also it lacks an advanced mode, ie. the ability to search a particular site, or for a particular file type. However it can be forgiven for such lackings because of the fact that it is only a day old (at least publicly). As long as it continues to develop continuously it may succeed. Thats because the most difficult and costly part of building a search engine is the search index. It takes a lot of cash to crawl and index the web. With billions of pages already indexed, the only obstacle for Cuil is to build a great search algorithm. And thats only too easy for a bunch of geeks.
