Review About Ubuntu 7.10 NOT 7.04, BUT 7.10
jbitkill replied to jbitkill's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Had a network issue last night, the network connections helper said "No network devices available" So I reboot my laptop and it was fixed. I think the problem was the electric went off and I was downloading something. So I know it heels itself for some problems. I had no wireless for like 1 minute. I didn't mind this because I was downloading a PDF document anyway. Just looked in the history got it. Does anyone know how to sync a Windows Mobile 2003 powered PDA to Ubuntu?Scores w/ CompizPerformance: 9.5Appearance: 10Network: 9Compatibility with Devices: 9 (10 if EyeToy was preinstalled and Pocket PC sync was installed)Average: 9.375 (93.75%)Talk to all of you laterxxxx-jozh-xxxx -
I wanted to set as DNS, but the message "Page not found" comes up for /phpbb/index.php. I would like to change to domain to subdomain (jbitkill.astahost.com) so the domain name will be a redirector to jbitkill.astahost.com. If possible, is there anyway to get my points back.Easier words: Undo the domain namexxxx-jozh-xxxx

Dear Xisto, I have set up my domain name as DNS instead of Web Redirect. Can you change it back to jbitkill.astahost.com because I get page missing and things. EDIT: The domain name is browny.uni.ccjbitkill

@Sten: If you want Linux under Windows, try Wubi or a Virtual Machine. My EyeToy is plugged in for aMSN. If you type in "eyetoy drivers" without the quotes in google, there is a driver for the big one and the small one. Firefox is taking 118.6MB, all of the programs is 365.7MB. Note: I got 7 tabs in Firefox with Compiz, System Monitor.Review: Installed OpenCity, it is great. Kind of like SimCity but Linux. Any questions, just ask Google.xxxx-jozh-xxxx -

Got Compiz running like a fab! Played around a little for the sake of it. It is taking 265MBs out of 1GB of RAM with Firefox running. Does anyone know where you can get Timidity++ compatible soundfonts. With Compiz, it is a opensource alternative to Windows Aero UI. Getting some games installed soon , I already got tons! My stats:RAM w/ FIrefox/Compiz - 265MB out of 1GB RAMHDD - 43.5GB left out of 55.6GBCPU Load averages for last 5 minutes: 0.25Biggest Memory taker - FirefoxWhat is connected - 1GB SD Card/EyeToyCatch all you laterxxxx-jozh-xxxx -

I have reinstalled VIrtualBox and now it came up something in the config file. I deleted the config, it regenerated itself and now I am running XP under Linux. I still need XP for some things like PPTX/DOCX/XLSX documents in Office 2007. I am installing Compiz now so I'll be here in 10minutes.Back in 10, xxxx-jozh-xxxx -

I'm back again. I got my EyeToy (namtai) working using OV51x-jpeg module. Just looking how to view it. OpenOffice 2.3 got a bug, it just crashes on its own? I'm trying to configure VirtualBox as well. I get The VirtualBox kernel driver is not accessible to the current user. Make sure that the user has write permissions for /dev/vboxdrv by adding them to the vboxusers groups. You will need to logout for the change to take effect..VBox status code: -1909 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_ACCESSIBLE).Result Code: 0x80004005Component: ConsoleInterface: IConsole {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45} I am going to reinstall it if it helps. System has not crashed yet. Be using Compiz soon.xxxx-jozh-xxxxPS: To M$, make your software cheaper and secure! -
Which Distro Of Linux Is Best For A Windows User ?
jbitkill replied to TotalLamer's topic in Websites and Web Designing
On my opinion, I would recommend Ubuntu with KDE installed or Kubuntu. If you like Media Center in XP/Vista, install LinuxMCE. It can monitor cameras, turn off lights. But one problem with LinuxMCE, you need compatible software.xxxx-jozh-xxxx -

@polarysekt: When KDE 4 is released, I'll install it and review it in this topic.@habble: I agree with you, it needs more programs. On a old PC without the Internet, I used a USB Drive to transfer programs. Also, the Ubuntu pronouncement is correct. You can use Gobuntu as that comes with more software.@Sten: I installed KDE/XFCE using the apt-get (apt-get install KDE) and they do have different versions of Ubuntu with KDE/XFCE. Ubuntu isn't only a African word, but it is an icon of freedom in Africa and the world (open-source/free). An inspiring symbol of tolerance and humanity. The tradition of Ubuntu: it is a universal truth, it is a way of life, it underpins the concept of an open society, PS: The information about the word Ubuntu was shamelessly stolen from the Examples when Ubuntu is installed.@toby: The XFCE edition is called Xubuntu. It is a LiveCD, but cannot be delivered by ShipIt.The review: The system hasn't crashed yet I have installed Timidity and it works great, just needs a new SoundFont. I have a question, how to you sync a Pocket PC?Any questions, just post.xxxx-jozh-xxxx -
Review About Ubuntu 7.10 NOT 7.04, BUT 7.10

Okay, I am on my Ubuntu Laptop. I can't install LAMP since I can't be bothered. Let's get on with the review:After I installed Ubuntu, I installed KDE and XFCE since I'll be reviewing these as well. When I installed, my sound on HDA Intel was really quiet. So I searched the Internet for "HDA Intel is quiet". I found the Ubuntu site and used the fix. It was really simple to fix, just add one line! I installed a few games/Google Earth and the graphics on the games, for free as well! My memory usage is 264.00MB out of 1GB with FIrefox on, Firefox is 37.0MB so without Firefox, 227.00MB. The advantages with Ubuntu that the security is tight, saving someone trying to change my password when they don't know it. A another advantage is its system requirements, I ran Ubuntu 7.04 on a 433MHz with 128MB and not a tiny slow! The disadvanages are the taskbar setup, I changed so its all on the bottom. When I went on Network, it picked my WIndows desktop share of Shared Documents. So far, I am really impressed!Scores:Appearance: 9Performance: 10More soonxxxx-jozh-xxxx -
Hi, I am testing Ubuntu for a few weeks. I have tested 7.04 but not 7.10. At this second, I am using Mac OS X 1.0.5 Leopard on the schools network. I installed UBUNTU on my laptop using the LiveCD. Some hardware had minor problems, but didn't disturb the installation. If you want my specs, check out Review About Vista. I installed Ubuntu and used 220MB of RAM out of 1GB. I think some of it is graphics memory. Soon, I will be installing the LAMP installation (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) for my WiFi network. I will get with you soon at 7:00PM (GMT UK)xxxx-jozh-xxxx

I'm going to install the Visual Studio 2008 Express suite. I have installed BitComet, It works like a pro! But I'll replace Vista with XP/Mac OS X dual-boot installation. I'll start a new topic on the Mac OS soon! Also, FreeBSD (OpenDarwin) will come next. Won't be reinstalling for a few weeks. -

I just found out that 20% of my memory is going to my graphics card (Shared System Memory). I installed Microsoft Office 2007 on my Vista installation. It works great! My Orange SPV M2000 (HTC Blue Angel) is good but cannot install EXE files to my Pocket PC. My problem is, how can I use my EyeToy? It is killing me since I use it as CCTV in my window. I used Media Center for the first time, I tryed Internet TV, there is no Internet TV available for the UK :-( The SideBar is really useful, I've got Weather, Sticky Notes and CPU/Memory usage. More soon!xxxx-jozh-xxxx -

More information:I found out that my Device Manager says 2 "Unknown Devices". I know one is TOSHIBA Mobile PC Driver but the other? Also, my EyeToy (Namtai, SCEH-0004) installs but in Windows Movie Maker, it says there is "no capture device available!". My SD/MMC and Pocket PC works perfectly (so far anyway!). That is one hell of a infected PC! There's MyWebSearch and the lot, especially Internet Explorer. So people, don't use Internet Explorer for the sake of your data. But a better thing, don't use Windows! That is a virus killer I tell you.xxxx-jozh-xxxxVirus ReportsWindows: Its uses BITS to transfer virus and runs as soon they're downloaded.Linux: It downloaded and said, this is not Windows! But, it did not execute the file.So use Linux for security and Windows for, well. C++

Thanks dewslat, I'm was hoping that I have to remove non-removable hardware from my laptop (eg. graphics card), just need to improve my RAM. But I don't have time yet, I'll do it over Christmas. I do have a PC that I might be testing Home Premium on, here's my specs: 2.5Ghz Intel Pentium 4 Northwood Processor 512MB of RAM NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX420 A DVD writer and a DVD reader Realtek AC97 Audio Current OS: Windows XP Professional (i think) 5in1 SD/MMC Card Reader ?in1 SM/CF Reader Also, are these devices OK: My 512MB USB 2.0 Flash Drive My 64MB USB 1.1 Flash Drive My Orange SPV M2000 (O2 XDA IIs, HTC Blue Angel) Connected via USB 1.1, software is activesync My memory cards (SD, MMC) Thanks xxxx-jozh-xxxx -
DELL are a good brand, at that price, I would forget fancy stuff and rip Vista off, install XP over it. I am using a dual-core processor in XP, it runs quite well. If you want a Media Center (TV, DVD), buy a Media Center PC and connect it to your TV. But make sure that the TV Tuner is the right type for your area like Freeview tuner won't work in a non-Freeview area and vice versa. If its a hybrid, don't worry since it is analogue and Freeview also. You can get FM tuner as well in the hybrid package.xxxx-jozh-xxxx
