  1. I am planning to work on a project where ICT can make difference in the life of community - the poor community.I am not talking about the people who are tech savy.... it's all about the people who have not even seen the computer in this ICT rich world (probably what we assume). Well for that matter technology is not thier priority... thier priority is obviously to get thier bread and butter....How can we help this community? How can the technology - ICT in particular change the lives of the rural community....There are generally two kinds of ICT- enabled development projects: those that are created from within the community by local actors who seek solutions to daily problems, and those that are devised by outsiders with new ideas and good intentions for solving community problems. The scope is unlimited... so do not restrict on the ideas....Thanks.
  2. A week after we are left with 8 planets. Pluto is no more called as a planet. I have all my sympathies with pluto. :DAre we still looking on how to define the planets. Since ages we have been teaching that there exists 9 planets. - A discovery is understandable but removing a planet from the list is not very understandable.
  3. Found a simple proxy software to share - proksi If you have more than one computer at home you can share Internet conected on one computer with another. With a network between your home computers and Proksi, you can share a single Internet access account and a phone line (or any other Internet connection, such as a cable modem) with all of your computers - simultaneously. Proksi is a proxy server software application that allows you to share a single (or multiple) Internet connection with an entire computer network. It is a small downloadable file with of less than 1 MB and very useful. We can restrict access by giving IP address in the proksi. Proksi's drawback is that it doesn't allow other traffic except html so all your messengers, ftp and other stuff won't work. It can be downloaded from Proksi download Does anyone know of any such simple proxy software which will allow all the traffic.
  4. I tried in both Windows XP Home and Professional. If you try to make a folder named "CON" Windows XP renames it back to what it was. So creating a new folder with the name "CON" just renames it to "New Folder".The bug seems like a variable that got treated as a string or vice-versa. Trying to create the folder from a cmd prompt failed with an error "The directory name is invalid.".This also works when you try to create a file called "CON", or "CON.". ".CON" shows up the way it should.Somewhere I found the reason that CON stands for CONsole which is device name but why does Microsoft have to be so restrictive???
  5. While it is generally not necessary for most users, some of us want to clear the pagefile on shutdown. PAGEFILE: Windows uses this file as virtual memory / extra ram. e.g. If you are working on a highly confidential MS Word doc. When you load this document it is loaded into ram. To save ram windows places certain items in the pagefile. With some effort, the pagefile can then be opened and the document can be extracted as well as any other open program or files. -- A BIG SECURITY RISK for confidential data. However Microsoft has implemented a feature that will clear the page file but they do not have it enabled by default. Please note, this will significantly increase the amount of time it takes to shut down your computer depending on the size of your pagefile. ---> but worth for computers having confidential data. 1. Start Regedit. 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management 3. Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right. 4. Right click on it and select Modify. 5. Change the value to 1 to enable. 6. Reboot your computer.

  7. Windows XP places the name for the person currently logged on to the system at the top of the Start menu. The reason for this is to make it easier to tell which user is logged on to a Windows XP system set up with multiple users. However, if you're the only person using the computer, you don't really need to have your name at the top of the Start menu. You can remove it using the Group Policy console (the Microsoft Management Console snap-in used to edit Group Policy objects).1. Launch the Group Policy console (Gpedit.msc). 2. Go to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Start Menu And Taskbar. 3. Locate and double-click the Remove User Name From Start Menu setting. 4. Select the Enabled option button and click OK. 5. Exit the Group Policy console. The change will take place immediately.Or you may switch to Classic menu from the start menu properties.Note: This tip applies only to Windows XP Professional.
