  1. Yeah.. it's a very sad thing to happen. I couldn't believe it myself when I first saw it on newspapers. But like someone had mention in this forum, when you play with fire long enough, you are bound to get burnt. But what make this incident even more sad/tragic is the news that 10 or so stingrays were found dead with their tails cut off. This, to me, is even more sad that the death of Steve Irwin. Come on, stingrays are not classified as a "tame" animal. You can't blame the animal if you encroached into their place and they strike at you for fear of their own lives. Hey.. humans are the ones with brains/mind, not animals. If you deliberately jump into a crocodile farm, don't blame the crocodile if they tear you up into pieces. Just can't understand what some people are thinking, taking vengeace on some mindless creatures....
  2. Well, for my motherboard, the slots are actually color coded. 1 and 3 is colored the same while 2 and 4 is of another color. Just another way to make sure which slots are paired together. There are actually paired RAM modules certified to work in dual channel way. This dual channel thing is kinda fuzzy/complicated so if you want to get the maximum out of this dual channel thing, get those certified RAM modules.
  3. I like the idea of summarizing the info on Xisto in a nice to find way/pages. Actually, that can be done in Xisto itself. After all, only members can post so they must come into the Xisto pages. But putting it on wiki could highlight the name of Xisto so more people can know of it.
  4. Yeah... it makes me sick too... know I shouldn't say this but he should have go out and kill those that made his life lousy... not some strangers... guess maybe that's why he is crazy or his life is lousy.... just keep hiding away from the truth....
  5. It is a good idea. And as mentioned by other people, it has already been implemented in some countries. It is exceptionally useful when you are not in a position to talk. Maybe in a kidnap/hostage situation or when you are severely injured that you can only muster enough strength to press the unlock combination on your phone and a button to send an emergency sms before you pass out. Unfortunately, I think the sms service reliability could be an issue. If i'm not mistaken, sms deliveries are not guaranteed to be delivered when you press the send button. There could be some delay, something like that. As for locating where is the person, it can actually be done. I'm not talking about theoretical stuff but actual working product. There is a service from my telco that lets you find where your friend is. Of course, he/she would have to grant you the permission first. I think it has something to do with traingulation of the mobile phone signal, something like that. Ok, after reading and posting here, think it's about time to go see how I can configure my mobile phone to send an emergency sms with the press of a button. I know there is speed dialing, so it might be possible for speed messaging???
  6. I kinda like what Mark420 is saying. I never lived in a rural community, so I don't know what it is like. I'm not a rich guy either. My parents are kinda uneducated. Anyway, what abartar said about rural community caring about their bread and butter makes perfect sense to me. And one way to do that through ICT is to eliminate the middlemen. And this is where Mark420 suggestion comes into play. Something along the line of ebay would be good. I suggest you to check you the price that the rural community get from their produce and the price that the produce is sold in the open market in the city. I bet you would see a big difference.
  7. I think there is something called dual memory access, something like that. My motherboard, an Intel D915GAV have that. I'm pretty sure other recent motherboards would have them as well but since I'm not a hardware retailer, there's no way to be perfectly certain. You should check your motherboard. What this "dual" thing does is that if you put 2 "similar" RAM modules on the specified slots, then it would work better than just 2X the RAM modules on one slot. Some even say that this "dual" thing works twice as fast. You can go check it out on the internet for more info. Just pointing it out here for you.
  8. You must be feeling really frustrated by now, Vyoma. I have the same feeling before too. They tell us that pirated copies are bad... you never know what's in it... people worked hard to produce those games.... blah blah blah.... But when I buy legal copies, and they don't work, I'm real pissed off. Especially when illegal copies do not have the problem. To make it worse, there don't seem to be solutions in their official homepage. Come on, I might not be a computer genius but i'm definitely not a newbie in computer. If my legal copy has a problem, i'm pretty sure other people have them too. If there are games developers reading this, please, tell your companies to update their homepage/FAQ... coz at the end of the day, when you pay for something, you want it to work. That to me is the bottomline. Moral argument that people work hard to produce games etc. don't really register when you are pissed off.
  9. Hi... I'm new to Open Office. And i don't rate myself as an advanced user of Microsoft Word. Just know enough to write whatever documents that I want to. So the question now is, are there any differences in features between the two? Some of you might say this is a redundant question since I'm not an advanced user of Microsoft Word in the first place, but hey... I just want to know. And how about saved documents in Open Office Write? Can those documents be opened in the intended format in Microsoft Word? And lastly, if you have ever encountered any problems with Open Office and its compatibility with Microsoft Word, please feel free to post it here. I would love to know about it. PS: I'm referring to the new Open Office, 2.0. As for Microsoft Word, I'm referring to all versions since some older versions are still in used.
  10. Hi... does anyone know of any free cool birthday mms with sound? I'm not sure which forum section to put this request, so admin/mod, feel free to move this topic to another more appropriate section.Hehe... don't tell me to create one myself since I'm just plain lazy. Not to mention I'm no good when it comes to graphic stuff. Have always been lousy with art since I'm young.
  11. I wasn't saying it is your mistake. I always thought only accepted tutorials would appear in the how to's and tutorials section. Just pointing out what I thought. Definitely not your mistake, ELTan, if you post a legitimate post and it can appear in the how to's and tutorials section. As for the sample web site, go to the free web hosting requests section and check out those applications for a free web hosting account. There should be info on their website's name. Have to remember though, that not all approved member would habe their website up and running. Hehe... I'm one of them. I thought I wanted to post something on the web, then, hmm... now, maybe later. I don't know...
  12. I can confirm that keys to get into the BIOS can vary. I have a Gateway, Dell and a unbranded computer and not all of them share the same keys to get to the BIOS. Guess they are using different BIOS chip, or they custom their BIOS chip. Ok, I need some help now with securing my Windows XP. Something was wrong and I need to go into safe mode and there it is. An admin account that did not need a password. There is actually 2 admin account listed. One was my account with my login and the other just have the name "Administrator". After reading through this topic, it seems like there are tonnes of way to access Windows XP if you have physical access to the computer. My question now is, any suggestions to better secure Windows XP? And how to I delete the default "Administrator" account in safe mode?
  13. Err... don't wanna seem a busybody but i thought only accepted tutorials would be in the how to's and tutorials site??
  14. Hmm.... this seems weird. Your group indicated that you are hosted. If I remember correctly, you are only hosted when you go to the process page and activate your account. I would recommend that you PM the admin that approved your account if there is no answer here for a couple of days. They might missed it....
  15. Well, the problem with saying that the battery is produced by Sony is that what does Dell produced anyway? As far as I know, a lot of their stuff is done the OEM way. You can't just say that when the motherboard in your Dell desktop computer fried, you go and blame some Taiwanese OEM manufacturer. Hey, if someone wants to blame the parts manufacturer, they go buy some unbranded computer in the first place.
  16. Thanx for all the info.Ok, guess I shall start with the Live CD first. I have heard of Knoppix live CD. But people say slax is faster. Can someone tell me why?One more thing. What are the most used and supported Linux distros out there? I mean, which distros does the manufacturers test their drivers/software on? Please post any problems that you encounter with your distros. Hehe... don't wanna encounter those problems myself..
  17. Yup, I would agree with HellFire121. There is actually nothing much that you can do about trapdoor/backdoor. If there is a weakness/flaw in Windows and someone uses it to his/her advantage, there is nothing that you can do, especially if Microsoft has not issued a patch as yet. Of course, you can decrease the chances of having a backdoor/trapdoor by having good and properly configured firewall and AV. Most importantly, don't simply download stuff, as stated by HellFire121.
  18. Hi. I'm new to Linux. Only tried it on KDE. Use it like using Windows. I'm thinking of using it more since it is free... Hehe....The question now is, as stated in the topic, what is the difference between live linux(where you run linux from the CD) and installed Linux, where in my case, it would most probably be dual boot.(Windows and Linux together on a single machine).
  19. Haha... now that is funny!! Time to ban those comedy shows. Especially the one where a couple of people imitate stuff. I think it's something called "What's talking?" Something like that...
  20. That is a very good point by Arbitrary. On one side we have the definition of "life" as defined by a group of scientists. On the other side, "life" is just ... well, life. Ok, I might not be getting my point across but what I'm trying to say is the semantic problem associated with common terms. We use those terms thinking that it is universal but most of the time, the terms meant different things to different people.
  21. Haha... I would agree with you... I have read of how those famous psycho guys actually looked pretty normal... some are even outright charming...
  22. That is a very good comment by Logan Deathbringer. There is a phrase, something like necessity is the mother of all invention. Something like that. Let's us just hope that the world superpower realizes the point that oil is running out while consumption is ever growing thus the need to change is NOW.... I don't wanna see a world war becoz there is not enough oil to go around....
  23. Yeah... I like the idea of getting a gift on the anniversary of joining Xisto... How about the admin give every member 50 credits on their anniversary... Too much... How bout 30 then? :DActually, there should be no shame in people calling you a geek or nerd or some other thing... You be surprised how some of the so-called "cool" people have their own nerdy/geeky hobbies. Take for example Maria Sharapova. She collect stamps. And some hot shots do play chess, and they are very good at it.
  24. That's why i like GOOGLE!!!! So many stuff is provided for free that if you don't see them for yourself, you'd won't believe it!!! Before GMail came about, we have pathetic free web-based mail that offer 2Mb of space. I still remember my Hotmail content getting erased if I don't check my mailbox for 2-3 weeks. Google really set the bar high for other tech company to follow... As to flooding Gmail with bogus accounts, you can't do that with registration by cellphone since each cellphone is only limited to a few accounts. I don't know how many since I only registered 2 accounts but it is certainly limited. I would still like invites to appear on my Gmail account since I might need more accounts in the future and some people just don't like putting personal information on the web. I certainly thought about posting my cellphone number for about 1/2 hour. But since I desperately need to compose a mail, there is no choice. Just have to trust Google to keep the information safe....
  25. I am still waiting for invites to appear on my 2 gmail account. Sigh...Ok, someone have written that you no longer need invites to create a gmail account. That is true, at least for me. I created my gmail account without an invite when I can't login to my Hotmail and I needed to compose a mail soon. Try going to https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue= https://mail.google.com/mail/ and there is instruction there on how to get your free gmail account. One thing though. When I got my gmail account, it needs a cellphone number with sms capability so that it can send you a text message containing a unique ID number that you can then key into the form as part of the registration process. So, anyone out there that needs gmail, and i tell you, it is GOOD..... :unsure:can either ask for an invite from vhortex or just go check out the gmail site.
