Web Page Design As Possible Side Job? What would it take?
PocketChange replied to lonebyrd's topic in Software
How much to charge - good question. My "Flash" instructor, who used design web pages for clients, had these general guidelines: flash site $250 per page; non-flash site $200 per page.Of course, this is only general statement and it varies depending on the content and features. -
Does he use any hacker proof tools?

Photoshop is great for creating graphics, while Flash is useful for animated objects. I wouln't use Flash too much though on the web page. Seems that excessive flash use is definitely out of style and web sites that are flash movies are not popular ( they look nice, but search engines can't index them). I like Dreamweaver for html because it has a lot of automated features like synchronizing, checking broken links, etc.

Major Website Mistakes Improve your site
PocketChange replied to BigmanB's topic in Websites and Web Designing
One of my dislikes in web design is using grey text. I don't mind slightly grey text on a white background - something that is similar to black and still readable, but mainly grey letters that are hard to read. Combine this with a small font and that's a recipe for not so friendly site. Surprisingly, there are number of webpages out there that use this approach. It reminds me of a fine print some financial companies use to have us skip reading the important stuff. -

I am interested in finding out what blog software people prefer. Personally, I like software that can be customized and generally flexible to make modifications. My first personal blog started using b2evolution. This package appears robust and very flexible. What I really like about it is the ability to modify skins as well as giving people a choice of a skin to view the blog. I wish this blog software though had a little better stats. The next blog is going to be in wordpress.Has anyone had any experience in using wordpress and b2evolution?

The way I like to learn new languages, scripts is to have the most fun when doing it. Usually, I need to do things fast (who doesn't ), so sitting and reading a book might not be the best way for me, since my mind wonders off sometimes. What works for me is doing a basic tutorial (there are number or those on the web, e.g. w3schools have nice ones). From there I can start delving into the code. Its best if there is something specific to do - some task that needs to be accomplished in the new language. Right now, I am learning PHP that way. I found that using blog templates, which are written in PHP and modifying them does the trick.

When choosing font for your website, do you go by what you like or what you think your users will like? We all want webpages that are easy to read and attract more visitors. Selecting a font can significantly affect the feel and usability of a webpage. There has been some research done suggesting that people in general prefer sans-serif fonts. San-serif fonts, or non-decorated fonts don't have extra lines around letters. Some examples: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma. Examples of serif fonts: Times New Roman, Georgia.I am curious to what people fonts people prefer to read or use in their webpages.Size is another issue? Would you rather read smaller, medium or large text?
