  1. I requested my web hosting account a few days ago and got it as approved but I am surprised as I am unable to register with an error message showing that the sub-domain (amitbhandari.astahost.com) doesnot exist, however I have already sent this sub-domain name as a request.

Please help me and let me know whether it takes some time to get registered after being approved.

Also, I looked on homepage of Xisto and found that SSH is available. It is going to be very useful to me as I am a dial-up user and this will help me uploading files in compressed format and de-compressing later thus saving my uploading time and making the whole process more efficient for me.

Now, the question is whether the SSH is automatically activated for every new account or does it require to be requested. If it requires a request then please tell me in which category should I post the request for activation of SSH for my account.

  2. Any complications when connecting TV tuner to a laptop?

First of all, let me tell you that there are no complicatons in connecting TV tuner card to a laptop.

As you might know, there are two types of TV tuners, internal and external. Ofcourse, external a bit on costlier side. Now, if you have external card, you really don't have to boot your laptop or PC up to start watching TV. It will work even if the CPU is switched off. Whereas in case of internal card, you need to boot your PC up and only then you will be able to watch TV.

The best card available in market is of Pinnacle. The card includes a TV Remote and software. Moreover, you can customize each button action of remote using software to perform any other action like running winamp on a press of button and more...

    So, the options are unlimited.

  3. I use 40 GB of internal hard disk to store all my data and I do think that this is somewhat optimistic as having such a space allocation organization will optmize the speed of windows because then Windows will be having enough space for itself, temp files/folders and more...

So, this is the way I have organized my hard disk

    Windows XP - 4GB

This drive can be used for re-installing operating system. No data backup required for re-installing since everything else will be on different drives

    Program Files - 3GB

Move the program files to another drive (or partition).

    To do this run regedit.

    Start->Run. Type regedit.

    SetHive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current VersionKEY: ProgramFilesDirVALUE: D:\Program FilesType: Reg_SZ

Remember, don't delete key with value C:\Program Files as it is required by Windows XP.

    Swap - 1GB

The 1GB is reserved for storing pagefil.sys of Windows XP. The advantage is two-fold. First, it takes some load off from poor C:\ and other the software like Adobe Photoshop CS works perfect as they can have their temporary files either in C:\ or D:\.

    Games - 5GB

I play some two-or-three 3D games for which 5 GB is suffice.

    Downloads - 5GB

It stores all my downloads which are automatically categorized by FlashGet 1.7 for me.

    Music - 16GB

Not to mention, it is the place where all music is stored and what I need is Windows Media Player 10 and selection of my songs to play.

    Personal Files - 5GB

Well, here is the place where I store my personal files and documents.

    Backup - 1GB

Any sort of backups for my maintenance work are stored here.

So, you see this makes my hard-disk somewhat organized and moreover, because of this, now-a-days, I need very few re-installation of operating system (in case of some problematic software only) as previously when every I got my personal file or music file lost somewhere on my PC and hit search and wait for long time until some success.

  4. Very few people know of the existence of 7-zip software, which is published as open source software at sourceforge.net.

Generally, users of Windows prefer the zipping module embedded with Windows XP or WinZip software and hardly, require any other compression software until required otherwise. The situations may include the different file-format, like ".rar" for which the user requires WinRar from rarlab.com.

Now, 7-zip is free software that let's you deal with many compressing algorithms including the most popular one's zip and rar. However, only un-rar'ing is possible that is rar files can be extracted but can't be created. Including this is a new file format .7z in 7-zip which is their new open compression standard.

Here are some facts from the 7-zip publishers that will clearly state about the sound-ness of the algorithm

FILE SET: The Canterbury Corpus (11 files totaling 2,810,784 bytes, popular file set used to compression rates).

    Archiver Compressed size Ratio 7-Zip (zip format) 676284 100% PKZIP 2.04g -ex 726047 107% WinZip 7.0 (Max) 731499 108%

Another fact or datasheet is more interesting

FILE SET: The GIMP 1.2.4 for Windows after full installation (127 subfolders, 1304 files totaling 27,128,826 bytes). The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It can be downloaded from https://www.gimp.org/.

    Archiver Compressed size Ratio 7-Zip (7z format) 5445402 100% WinRAR 3.10 6004155 110% WinAce 2.3 6242424 115% CABARC 1.0 6455327 119% 7-Zip (zip format) 9461621 174% PKZIP 2.50 9842800 181%

These facts clearly states that 7-zip provides compression standard which far more better than existing one's and moreover, is freeware.

The only area where the software lacks is its interface though it is comparable to WinZip but not as intelligent as the WinZip's interface. However, it integrates seamlessly with the Windows shell providing right-click options to create archive or extract from archive.

I hope this will change your mind towards Open source stuff and you would like to try this new standard which provides more compression.

  5. Well, before posting this topic I searched the forum for any such existence since its very common now and i hope most of you will be knowing about it. However, still posting and targeting for those who still don' know and really want to get themselves accquainted with Linux flavor.

Before I say anything on getting CD, it will be unfair if I don't describe about the distro. The distro is based on Debian, a popular and stable Linux release common among Linux community.

Now, what they are offering is FREE CDs of the operating system (Ubuntu Linux 5.10) which are delivered at your doorstep free of cost. What's more exciting is that you don't have to pay even for the cost of CDs. All expenses that are included are of postage charges. Again you don't have to pay before getting the CDs. All you need is register and request the number of copies of OS you want (minimum 5), and you are done.

I have already received the shipment of OS and it cost me just Rs. 5 (INR) for 5 copies of OS. To get your copy, just visit https://www.ubuntu.com/ and register yourself for shipit service and you will be mailed the CDs of OS.

What is their in the package?

Each copy consists of two CD-ROMs, of which one is Live CD which can be used as preview (i.e. you wish to see how the operating system will look like without actually installing it) and second one is Installation CD.

The installation of CD takes time since you get compressed installation which must be un-compressed to your hard-drive before actually installing the OS. I must add here that the installation is still text-based but the installed OS is worth looking at.

The CD is filled with all necessary softwares required in a typical environment. More packages can also be added later.

In the last, I would just say...Enjoy the FREE WORLD of LINUX.

  6. Hunting for a good book

The more daunting task - hunting down a good book. The way is not easier one though. The search would require to shuffle through a big heap of books lying on a bookstore and ofcourse, its time consuming and generally, not to the dot.

Once the book selected, only 20 percent is going to be the useful material all else (biggie 80%) is going to be waste for the reader though it will help to wash up the brain and clear some fundamentals.

Reading books is quite convenient- after all, books are easy-on-eyes with well-organized and cross referenced material. A big plus point is that the sample code is also tagged along with making the experience much better.

    Surfing and Finding way manually

One simple google search query is all it takes. Though it takes some time as site browsing is involved but can be done by sitting on the chair itself.

The whole material is free, so, no guilt about wasted investments. The site is also organized like a book and clicking the links will take me to the next chapter or topic accordingly. Moreover, there are support forums, newsgroup available to help solving a beginners' problem.

    Conclusion

So, one can easily conclude that learning online is more productive as compared to conventional method and is quite cost-effective. The only disadvantage that may seem is the freedom of place and time where reader can read but with the upcoming smart hand-held devices, this limitation is going to be removed.

  7. hi friends,Have you ever wondered about that qwertyui layout of the keyboard? Why is it being designed that way?Well,I was the one to wonder about it. Why haven't they designed in abcdef way so that even kids find it easy to follow.I went to google for that. Mr. Google told me that earlier there were no computers but typewriters. The keys of typewriter were not that much responsive. They didn't response if hit at a fast pace. So to make the speed slow a new layout was designed which is the qwertyui layout you use. Now that qwertyui layout was so much used that they kept it going even when the response times of keys have improvedI hope you got something new from this post.Do post your comments.Regards.

  8. Hi all,Have u heard about SSH. Its a network service which runs at port no. 22Its secure in the sense that it transfers data using encryption. The user name and password are sent after encrypting so that the sniffer can't get hold of them. More interestingly, it has a feature that allows the user to forget password and use encryption as the basis of aunthetication. There is a very interesting tool known as Putty. Putty allows you to generate a pair of public and private keys. The user submits the public key to the server. The server stores the user name and his public key in the location:./.ssh/authorized-keyswhen the user sends a request to login. The server generates a random number, encrypts it using the key provided by the user and sends it to the user. The user uses his private key and decrypts the number and sends the number to server. The server matches the number it generated and the one received from the user. If they match, the user is authenticated by the server.Hope that helpedRegards.

  9. hiI use Google 90% of times.clusty.com 5% of times andwikipedia again 5% of times.I would ask everybody to give clusty.com a try. Though it gathers the results from MSN,Hotbot etc. (Not Google) but it categrizes the results with respect the reference. e.g. Search on SCORPIO may be in reference to SUN SIGN or the real living scorpio. That's the power of clusty.Do check that search engine.Regards.

  12. HiI am a newbie here. Registered today on this forum and found it amazing and exciting with the options of hosting account available here. However, I would like to share my worst experience about Bizhat.com, a free web hosting provider.Well, the only difference was that they considered post-count instead of hosting credits and for 50 posts, they gave 50 MB with 5 GB transfer with PHP/MySQL. Now, that seems sounding! But the sad part of the story is that there server got hacked and the hacker changed all the passwords of the usernames existed there. Mine got changed too! Now, they have changed their policies. No PHP/MySQL support now though the webspace is still the same. I got really suffered from all this since my website used phpBB.
