  1. Hi WeaponX,Have you tried the safe boot. Since if thats successful, it means there is a faulty driver. You need to identify and uninstall that driver from safe mode.If Safe boot also fails, there can be a genuine memory issue. Try to get the RAM checked. Also finally Win XP without SP2 is liable to get infected, which results in reboots. So, try to have that checked as well.best luck

  2. It does happen. If you think your evaluation has been wrong, and that from a measured thought rather than pride, I think then you should challenge the authorities. However, the road here is dark ahead. I too once had the unfortunate chance to challenge my authority, which resulted in cold relationship with my teacher. However, You should make your protest known.Good Luck.

  3. Hi,

I have tried a number of different linux distros, but I have never tried out opensuse, so I figured that I would give it a try.

I am in the process of downloading the installation DVD (as opposed to 6 CD's or whatever it normally takes). But I was wondering in the mean time if people could give me their experience with it.

I really like their website, as it seems to be very complete. They even have a HCL (Hardware compatibility list) which seems fairly complete (moreso than many other linux distros): https://en.opensuse.org/HCL

Currently I use ubuntu, but I was thinking of maybe installing opensuse alongside it...

If you hear me, open suse, is a big waste.. Ubuntu is sleeker and much more responsive. above all, 'apt-get' rocks, nothing like that on open suse. I have used the the suse enterprise version 9. and opensuse 10.1, (which I had evaluated) doesnt come close to it.

    My main contentions are..

    1) bulky, takes a lot of hd space.

    2) slower.

    3) difficult to install applications from source.

    4) yast is buggy. many times I havent been able to get the network card detected. It hangs in there, I need to kill. Doing it from command line works although.

    5) update is too cumbersome.. takes a while from yast.

    6) firewall is too difficult for a novice user.. so do not enable it at installation time..

    Good:

    1) Cool Looks

    2) easy installation

    3) better than selinux.. AppArmor does stuff much more easily.. and I never needed that much of security...

    regards

  4. Well I am sure, google is going to have th domain gmail nicely under its hoods. Its sometimes good to show we dont need that, to bring down the price. Nothing is unsaleable, you need to quote rightly. Even if google looses gmail domain, I think I will have to stick with googlemail, since its much much better than any of the contenders. some day, there will be emails generating from computer domains rather than internet domain. The domain of Peer 2 Peer Connection. I have been thinking a lot on. Say you can just email from your computer and receive on your computer, you are given a dynamically assigned domain, which you can get free. Its just my imagination.. ;)

  5. Even though your idea is very nice, it takes a lot of money besides effort to get it running and accessible. Internet is a piece of a big Jigsaw puzzle, which somehow, takes time to open up. Drupal to me is obvious, and you say it doesnt have integrated forums. However, it does have forums. Its much easier to create pages and extend help. A Lot of older people cannot even search properly. Sometimes there keywords are non-technical, and hence they cannot search for a solution. I think it will take up an army of old people to define what they need, and I guess some day a smart old man will make a better job for their community. Already there are deferent forums for so many different things, grouping them together in one place would be aesthetically difficult to navigate and use. my 2 cent..

  6. This help is for linux machines behind a FTP proxy.. (Note: Squid is not a true FTP Proxy server)

Say the proxy server is squid configured to be running on ' 192.168.0.10' Port '3128'

then some of the things we can do..

    * List Files On FTP Server

    curl --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128  xyz%3Amypass%40sharethespace.com%3A21

    * Download a file

    curl -o STSServerInstaller.exe --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128 http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

    * Upload multiple files to the ftp server..

    curl --upload-file "{rarlinux-3.6.0.tar.gz,vmlogo.xpm}" --verbose --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128  xyz%3Amypass%40sharethespace.com%3A21

Note: We are uploading two files ie. rarlinux-3.6.0.tar.gz and vmlogo.xpm, similarly we can state more files, with a comma seperated list.

    * We can also give the username/ password in options which is much safer than using it on the URL.

    curl --upload-file "{rarlinux-3.6.0.tar.gz ,vmlogo.xpm}" --verbose --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128 -u xyz:mypass  sharethespace.com

    curl -o STSServerInstaller.exe --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128 -u xyz:mypass http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

    curl --proxy 192.168.0.10:3128 xyz:mypass http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

CURL is a free GPL'ed Utility available on various platforms. in linux it comes by default.. in case its not there, please visit https://curl.haxx.se/download.html and download the version required for your platform. Windows Binary download is here

Note: The normal FTP client (Shell or ftp on dos prompt) does not work with ftp proxy servers.

  7. Ubuntu is better than windows. It is pretty smooth to install, unless you have weird devices. Next to it is Suse, supports much more devices. very good for laptops.next to them is Fedora core. Ultimately debian, gentoo and slackware, which are pretty good for the power users, but once you have a feel of it there is nothing compared to the power, speed and configurability of these distros. my favourite being slackware.

  8. Hi,

    - NATURAL solution. --- toss the toothbrush ---
+ First, youd have a bottle of a substance youd think today as listerine. This contains Substance A, which the applicant would keep in thier mouth as lang as possibly, swishing and shaking every few. In this time, the substance would have a bonding preference to calcium, and to get to that calcium it would need to saturate whatever is before it, which would be plaque and just crap in general.

+ So you swished around for a solid 1-2 minutes, spit the liquid out. Swallowing is possible, for the substance bonds exclusively to calcium, and when met with Amylase or any other kind of digestive enzyme it is easily disposable.

+ Put the bottle of Substance A down and with a slightly concentrated liquid form of Substance B, mix a 1:1 ratio of that and water that is as warm, but cool enough for you to have in your mouth. Wait 1 minute for the substance B to fully disipate in the mix and for the enzymes to become excited.

+ With the Substance B mix in your mouth, let it settle for roughly 1/2 a minute, then swish for the next 1/2 minute, repeat until the water has significantly cooled.

+ Spit the Substance B mix out, wait 15 minutes with no food or drink, and apply a substance that is very same to substance A, only it differs in how its recognized by substance B, so it is not eliminated, but has a significantly thicker density, so as it bonds to the calcium it forms a protective barrier.

+-- What happens here is Substance B is targeted towards substance A, so when Substance A saturates the plaque and crap, Substance b will eliminate all that is permeated by it, therefore taking the plaque and crap away. Because all of this process is targeted towards dense calcium deposits, there is no risk for loosing gum tissue etc., and although it should be avoided, it could be swallowed.

    that was mind blowing...

  9. Hi,

If there is any other info that might help just ask (you might have to tell me how to get the information).

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be very appreciated.

This means the eth0 couldnt get any ip address.

Do you have a DHCP server on the LAN ?

or you can do one thing.. have a static IP for the eth0 (assuming eth0 is the network card hooked on to your LAN). Open '/etc/network/interfaces'

    and have something like this...

    ======

    # /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

    # The loopback interface

    auto lo

    iface lo inet loopback

    # The first network card - this entry was created during the Debian installation

    # (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)

    auto eth0

    iface eth0 inet static

    address 192.168.0.50

    netmask 255.255.255.0

    network 192.168.0.0

    broadcast 192.168.0.255

    gateway 192.168.0.10

    ======

Remove all the other interfaces ie. eth1, eth2... till wlan0..

    Now check...

    Cheers

  10. This is something I had always wated to do, but was afraid of the find's complexity.. here is a very short description, of how I did it.. My linux box.. running squid had no space.. then I relaized.. that squid had those millions of cache files.. deleting them one by one was real pain.. so had to read the 'man find' and here is the result.. it got back 70% of my space..find /var/spool/squid/* -size +10k -type f -exec rm -f '{}' \;The command meaning..find args1 = <where to find>args2 = <find by what, which means it could be -name, -type and here we give -size to mean we wish to find files by size>args3 = <what size.. +10k would mean above 10 kilo bytes>args4 = <and one more condition .. -type, which means what type of things should it match>args5 = <-f means files.. we could have mentioned -d (directory) -b (block), -c (character), -f (regular file), -l (link), -s (socket), -p (pipes) >args6 = <-exec means what action to perform if all the matches are true, so -exec is for action..>args7..10 = < the following of -exec is a shell command.. rm -f {} \; this means the results of match is removed (deleted)>Cheers...

  11. HI,

there is a way, which is very cute, and since I found this way I have forgotten any issues of converting any document to PDF. Download it from here http://www.primopdf.com/.

after installing it, you will get a virtual printer installed. Once the virtual printer installed, you can print any document in any application to a PDF document.

There are some other applications similar to primopdf, however, this is the smallest and really fast in printing any kind of doc, excel, plain text.. etc.

    Hey,
Just curious if anyone knows if tehre is a plug in of some sorts for excel that allows you to export to pdf format instead of the usual excel document?

In open office they allow you to export to a pdf format, for the last little while I've been creating spread sheets within excel and then porting them over to open office and exporting from there to pdf format (either that or creating the document right in open office). When I do create the documents in excel and then move them over to open office to export something always seems to change within the document that needs to be adjusted.

Hence, why I'm asking aboud a plug in for office...so I don't have to readjust my documents when I move them from excel to open office =/

If anyone knows whether or not a plug in exsists, any info would be great.

    Thanks

    cheers

  12. Some of you like myself swear by google, since we cannot imagine living without google search. However some of the discussions on net has made me thinking over an important issue. Will Google control too much of our lives ?

here are the links which discusses an important point on google's future plans ...

Google wants to be YOUR Internet.

    Google becomes domain name seller

    A Google OS by 2010

    Google's Sinister(?) Plans

    GoogleOS Scenarios

Let me add, google has already hired top brains for its (secret project), headed by Robert Pike. It could be soon, the era of booting into a internet harddisk. Otherwise, why is google investing so much into bandwidth ?

There is enough material, above to make the next sci-fi movie, where google controls everything.

I would be glad to hear your inputs..

  13. I have been reading books and codes... but I understand better with a book in leisure in the corner of my bed relaxing with a cup of coffee, cigarette. I dont think online reading is optimum.Yes, Its so much helpful to get the thing done (my belief), however for grasping a new language, or learning something cool really takes, an undivided attention, which comes when you are at ease, with yourself and a book. Net study is good if I could perhaps practice a little bit more of self restraint. There are numerous times, that I get swayed from one topic to another, and never really understanding where I started.Well.. Books will live..

  14. OS is the same for H/W as air is to us, and by centuries is free. All OS's in future will be free, otherwise we are being asked to pay for what we breath.

similarly All communication will go free, since that I consider as the water.

So for me, there is a no no for all paid, closed source products, even if down the road we need to invent an OS.

The OS field should see a lot of new ideas in the coming days. I read a recent article by Rob Pike ( I presume some of you know him, if not read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Pike ) (the article is here http://herpolhode.com/rob/utah2000.pdf).. which states, the bad approach in research of Operating Systems.

Time and again, the businesses have tried to cripple research and progressive thoughts. but its always proved, that you cannot halt creativity.

Google OS sounds evil to me so far, it may be free, but eventually it would'nt be a free ride forever.

  15. As far as the https issue goes, have you tried going to Tools > Clear Private Data (ctrl + shift + del) before using the secured site? I personally haven't had any problems with https sites so far.

yes I tried that, does'nt work. I specially get these when viewing source forge HTTPS pages. I am interested to know if thats with anyone else too. I have a linux machine, with firefox 2.0.0.1..

  16. As a developer and having a team, which has to work under a User Interface expert, I have come to know a few things. A smart coder is usually is the worst UI Designer.A Good UI designer is the worst coder (and probably doesnt understand the complexity)So there are these situations, where in the coder has to catch the nose the other way. And there are performance blocks and bugs which generally go through release.I think we need something in between. Some good coders and an average UI designer :)gee if only I could tell all that to my management ..

  17. Hi Unimatrix,

Iran is a state that is going to have to be dealt with and I don't think diplomacy is going to work. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientist pushing the Doomsday clock up a couple minutes is not only warranted, but I'm surprised it's not even closer. I don't see any effective way of ensuring the destruction of Iran's nuclear facilities short of using ground penetrating tactical nukes.

I agree to your suggestion, its a trap which is being funded by the Saudi mullahs and Iranian terrorists. Its time the US forces should raise political awareness in the world against whats these two countries are doing.

I would also like to add, that US, needs some more proactive media coverage. Some of the presses in europe are making out bad publicity for US on the path of IRAQ.

Also, there is a rising pressure on Bush Administration to bring back our boys who are way too stressed in Iraq. It would definitely require a lot of political talk to convince the American people, Or there needs to be one more 9/11.

  18. Alt + Click does'nt save anymore, in forefox 2 for me. I didnt know the info that if you do 'ctrl+click' you go to a new tab.. (thanks) it sure is a faster way.. Also I have noticed, that the HTTPS sites are cached for way too long. Hence visiting again sites which require the certificates to be accepted, are not viewable. Especially in credit card transactions I find a lot of issue. I generally turn to opera, when firefox behaves funny. Do any one else has the same experience ?
