Interests
My name is Eyivnd Martensson. I am half Swedish, ahlf Norwegian, but at the moment I live in San Diego, California ( I come here every winter, and have done so since I was 5, 1994). I really enjoy working with computers, and I enjoy almost every possible aspect of them. I am very profficient at Java programming (not to boast, or anything ), and I ahve taken AP Computer Science A (normally hichgschool freshmen are not allowed to take the class, but I was, ), I was planning to take AP Computer Science AB this year, but the class was cancelled due to too few people signing up for the class. I have started thinking about taking the Sun Certified Java Programmer Exam (I have looked over a review book for it and see I know everything on the exam). I also enjoy Webdesign, at the moment CSS, PHP, and MySQL. My newest website is at YouLikeJava.tk, it is a website (mostly a forum so far) for Java.

I have played freelancer for a week or so now and I think it is a great game. There is a great singleplayer with fun and chalenging missions, as well as a great multiplayer option. There are hubdreds of servers to play on, each with their own twists to the game, one might give you 1,000,000 credits (the freelancer currency) to start off with, one might let you start with a cruise ship, the other might have compeltely different planets and ships, maybe a star wars version. And of course there are servers where you can play with all teh regular rules, if you get tired of all the spoofed up versions and want to play, shall I say, honestly. There are endless possibilities to the game, a lot of ships, hundreds of weapons and special equipment like missiles, torpedoes, countermeasures, mines, turrets, and each of these with different types (like laser, pulse, and particle weapons and guuided and nonguided missiles and powerful and weaker torpedoes, and more powerful and homing mines and bigger and stronger turrets). There are also what's called commodities. When you kill enemies (or neutral ships, or maybe een your allies) they might drop loot, you can tractor the loot into your ship and, depending on teh worth of the loot you can sell it for tons of money at bases and planets and battleships. (Sometimes teh ships drop weapons that you can use yourself). There are thousands of different commodities, ranging from scrap mtetal and water to luxury consumer food (which can spoil) and cardamine (a drup illegal in many places) and alien artifacts (which are also ilegal in some places). The universe that is open for you to explore is immense. There are tens of systesm which you can travel between through jump gates or jump holes (the latter is usually used by pirates and criminals), and each system has sometimes as many as 5 to 10 planets, other times there is only one or two stars and a base or two. Inside the sytstems there are what are calle dtrade lanes, they make traveling through the system much much quicker, you dock with it and you start flying really really fast. This might make the game less fun as it makes the game less realistic (it takes too little time), actually, following an estimate made by a top player (I'm not sure what he is, he might be some guy from microsoft, liek the head developer of the game or something, I'm not sure, his name is Phil) in an interview at lancersreactor.com (the leading website for freelancer guides etc, including a list of commoditites and their prices at different ports whoch I use extensively) that if you zip through all teh systems as fast as you possibly can without docking anywhere or stopping at all, you might be able to visit every system in about six and half hours, and of course it takes a lot longer if you actually want to explore everything. There are secrets in every system. For example there are abandoned ships (wrecks mostly) that you can loot. They usualy give very expensive weapons and/or commodities. Of coure there is a catch... the wrecks are usually surrounded by one or more of the following: lots of enemy ships, radiation that will ignore your shield and damage you till you die, an area of loss of sensors (which severely hampers your ability to actually find the wreck). There are also different factions in teh game, lots of factions, some of the (at first at least) friendly ones are, in the starting system are the Liberty Police and the Liberty Navy, as well as tons of neutral ones including a bunch of trading corporations such as Universal SHipping and othe rmiscelaneous corporations like the Cryer Pharmaceuticals. There are otehr factions like th bounty hunters and the junkers that fly around and hounty loot and heads, they mostly start out neutral with you. Your enemies (in teh beginning at least) are mostly the Liberty Rouges, the Xenos, the Outcasts, and the Corsairs. YOu can become friends or enemies with anyone you want with some effort, for exampleby destroying some Liberty Police SUpply depots (na dstealing teh goods inside) you will quickly become friends with teh Liberty Rouges and enemies with the Liberty Police (and Navy and a bunch of other people).I have touched on quitew a bit, but each topic has a lot more to learn about as well as teh tons of other topics that I haven't even mentioned.THe trial can be downloaded at microsoft.com, and the full version can be bought for maybe $9.I have had a great time playing, hope you will too.(If I sayed soemthing wrong, just reply, or igf you want to continue this length description go ahead.)

Yeah, I like them too. They are great to have in signatures, especailly for e-mail where you should avoid HTML.I used to put my name in ascii characters on the cover sheet of my projects at school, of course then I spent too much time doing it all by hand and it took a long time.

You can choose to have a pop-up or not!!! You can have a banner if you want, you can have a text link if you want, or no ads at all!!! As I said before, you can write a very simple JavaScript script and put it on your targetted webpage that redirects to your website without teh frame. The frame is what kills. Here is my script: <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"><!--parent.location.href = 'http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;

The cells that the spacer is in are otehrwise empty, it is in there to give the cell some substance, without substance there is no cell. The point of the cells around the middle cell is to give the middle cell a border, so the cells are given a background color to be the color of the border. These cells need something in them to really be visible, so a "blank" image is put in each."does the image tile the cell like a small image does the background of a web page?"No, it does not tile in the cell, think of it as a compeltely blank picture that just is there, isn't visible at all, it is onl;y there so that the cell has something in it, so it can be seen.Hope that helps."In my opinion, using tables still the best way to manage your'e web page design..It's also make use of cross-browser..so you are not to worry what type of browsers you're client will use.But actually, this forum gives me a hint that i can also create a site more on CSS, that i will try soon. "You can use JavaScript to check what browser your user has and use a custom CSS style for that browser, one that shows the content teh way you want to. You really should use CSS, but if the page is just a small page that will never be expanded upon or not part of a bigger website, go ahead and use tables.

also check java.com, and java.net.you can also get help at the java forums (which can be reached form ajva.sun.com) and also youlikejava.tk.

DON"T USE BUBBLE SORT!!!! it is just realy, realy, rreally, slow. Think of bubble sort as a bottle of some substanvce of low viscosity with bubbles speead throughout it, it takes a long time for the bubbles to slowly climb their way to the top, as with the bubble sort, it takes a long time for teh elements to slowly reach tehir appropriate position.the fastest is Quick Sort, but, dependign on teh order and value of the elemnts alreadsy in the array, it is somettimes faster and sometimes slower, but on average, it is faster, at least, than bubble sort (Thoughthat isn't to asay very much).Insertion is also slow, it loops throught he vaues and inserts the values in order at the beginning (and then it ahs to move all tehj other elements over one to maek room for it whch takes a lot of time).Well, you should basically read about it yourself and decide whch one is most applicable, just as long as you don't use bubble sort.

It is aspacer, it adds transparent space (it's invisible), to pad and precisely position elements. SPacers are used on many image intensive (especailyl table based) websites, usualy name spacer.gif or something like that, it is just that, a spacer. One thinga bout CSS compatablity. To use CSS effectively now during the browser war (which I think is dying off), you need some scripting to back your CSS up: you check to see what browser and OS the surfer is using and you fine tune your CSS style according to that, you may have separate ones or you change one "dynamic" one. MAybe in JavaScript, that way you would sidestep all compatability issues, granted, it would take a while and be quite tedious to set the system up, especialy to make it reusable.

The Ruby Language Is Ruby a scripting language or not?
eyvind replied to eyvind's topic in Programming
Ok, I recognize that Ruby is a scripting language.Of course there isn't much demand for Ruby programmers, very few people know about, and, as we now apparently have established, it is a scripting language. Those who account for the most programming jobs are corporations and businesses, and corporations and businesses have a tendency not to jump quickly to new and little-tested things, things that have little compatability and familiarity, especailly regarding technology.I just think that Ruby is one more step (as was/is Java) toward a more exclusive OOP programming language. This is maybe the beginning of a OOP trend, which is, of course, more important than whether or not Ruby is a scripting language or not. -
Is Ruby a scripting language? Personally I think it is a full programming language. When I think of a scripting langauge, I think of Perl or JavaScript, Ruby isn't like those, Ruby is a lot more like Java than Perl. What do you think?
-
I didn't look under scripting for that reason, RUby is a fullflsddged programming language, NOT a scripting language. It is definitely in teh same league as Java, at least more so than Perl.I really think we should have the Ruby Forum here in Programming, (although it wasn't the main point of my post).

Yes, I agree: it depends (at least to some degree) on what your eyes are used to seeing. However, it depends a lot on the contrast between teh two colors. white and black contrast a lot so they strain your eyes. Black on gray is good that way as there is not as much of a contrast between the two, black and gray. Anotehr factor I think is the brightness of the colors, if they are really light (for example, yellow on white) or if they are dark (violet on black) it gets increasingly harder to see clearly and comfortable. The third factor is simply color. The color should not be too warm or cool, but somethere in the middle. There are a few websites that when i visit them I can feel the strain leave my eyes, one of them is aboho (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). I suggest go around the web and try to find some websitees that are pleeasing and comfortable to look at, that way you can find a good combination or combinations. Hope that helped.

I have been a huge fan of Java for a few years now, and recieved a 5 (out of 5) on the AP COmputer Science A exam (college level programming, in Java). I signed up for AP Computer Science AB for this year, but 7 people signed up so the class was cancelled, so I have signed up for next year. I have also read a few books on Java, one of which is the Exam Prep (Exam Cram) review book for the Sun Certified Java Prgrammer exam, it looks to me as though I know most of what is tested, but I have not memorized the limits for the different primitive types. THat is my background in Java. This year, a few weks ago really, I came acros a new programming language, Ruby. Ruby appears to be as Object Oriented as is presently possible, which is shown, or alluded to, in their moto: "Where everyhing is an object." If you look at a statement in Ruby: returnedNumber = -7.ab assigns 7 to returnedNumber. In Java: returnedNumber = Math.abs(-7); You can tell how much more OO Ruby is even compared to Java. Durign my Java addiction I began a website: "You Like Java?". I have now decided to change my website to "You Like OOP?"(I actually requested here to change my subdomain to oop, from java, but apparently I had too little credits, which is partly why I am posting this, ) I think we should have a Ruby Forum, Ruby is prospering, athough relatively few people know about it, it is powerful, and, I think, sets teh way for even purer OOP languages, paving the way for the furure of programming. Here are a few Ruby websites: /en/ (the official Ruby site) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ("the source for Ruby") http://blade.nagaokaut.ac.jp/ruby/ruby-talk/index.shtml (ruby talk) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (the Programming Ruby book) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (the same book, but here you can actually execute the ode samples right from your browser!) http://rubyforge.org/ (you know sourceforge right? well this is rubyforge.) There are a lot more links, you can fnd the best ones here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.

Eyvind, That's Me. What all the other threads here are.
eyvind replied to eyvind's topic in Introductions
A+ as in SCJP or MCSA (or whatever), no, but I have llooked over a SCJP review book, and I seem to know everything (except the limits of the primitive data types by heart, ugh)i have a website here at astathost on Java, but it will probably be changed to OOP, to broaden it a bit. -
Oh there sure are things to complain about, you muight not have encountered problems. But I have, the big thing is that they use frame rediection, not URL, so cookies, POST and a few otehr things are mesed up.As I said I cheated to overcome their frame redirection, so now everythign is fine, youlikejava.tk, now works, it did not under frames.

It does not cost $100 to have a domain name, if that is what you mean, (if it isnt't what do you mean?), it costs more like $5 or $10 max a year.Astahost does not put ads on your webspace, that is the reason I came here, .
