Star Ocean 1 is the best game on the system. It was never officially released outside Japan, but there's a translation patch available that will let you take the Japanese ROM and get an English version. You'll also need a fairly new SNES emulator since it used some odd chip that didn't get emulated until recently.

Thanks for the advice. I'd like to get something going fairly soon so that I can actually build a real site...

Wow, KitKat you're a C64 fan too? You'll have to visit my site. Once it's worth visiting. Anyway my fave old-school games would have to be Katakis (C64), Space Quest (a zillion platforms) and SMB3 (NES)

If RPGs are your think then look around for RPG Maker 2k/2k3/xp. Some people consider them warez, but seeing as they were never released outside of Japan and the english versions were made by fans, I don't think you'll get in trouble for using it. If point and click adventure games (a la Space Quest, Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry ) are your thing then check out Adventure Game Studio ( http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ ) If 3D games (FPS, 3PS, etc) are your desire then check out Reality Factory a very nice Open Source toolkit that lets you make simple shooters without writing a single line of code and complex 3d if you learn the simple scripting language. If retro systems are your hobby, then check out SEUCK for the C64. Although if you're actually in 8th grade you prolly don't know what the C64 is...

It should be attached to the window like in windows/most *nix setups. that way you always know what program's menu you're using. The problem with a menubar at the top of the screen is that it can be confusing, to me at least. i guess, the best system is actually like in KDE where you get to pick where your menus go.

I noticed that Fantastico gives me a large choice of various CMS systems to chose from. I was just wondering what the advantahes and disadvantages of a Wiki versus a more mainstream CMS are. On the one hand, for a community-based site like the one I'm planning on putting up, Wiki could make it easier for collaborative content, on the other hand, a normal CMS is harder to deface. ATM, I'm just going to put up an SHTML under construction page, though...

A GOOD midi tune can sound wonderful. It's just that most MIDI tunes suck... And SID rocks. Go old-school 8-bit music.

Linux + Laptop = No No? A question for those who know..
madcrow replied to Adwodon's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I've NEVER had a problem with Linux on my Laptop. It works fine. -
There ARE smaller bandwidth-friendly formats like MIDI, MOD and for those with a real retro love, SID. Even the best SIDTUNES are under 60KB, after all they had to fit into a computer with only 64KB of RAM while leaving room room for code and graphics... To include SID tunes you need to use something called SIDPLUG tho.

Downloading Internet Radio Is there a way?
madcrow replied to redsox58's topic in Websites and Web Designing
For those who say this is techniacally illegal: BS. It's only illegal if you go and put the files up on P2P or something, otherwise it's perfectly legal. Saying that recording netstreams is illegal is just as dumb as saying that it's illegal to record a TV program or real radio broadcast to watch or listen to later. That said, thanx for all the cool tips for how to do it. -
Do Aliens Really Exist? Hot Debate! do they really exist?
madcrow replied to tcave's topic in Science and Technology
I don't see any reason why there COULDN'T be aliens. After all space is so large that out of all the stars in all the galaxies, I find it hard to believe that ours is the only one that has a planet with life circling it. That sid, I find it highly unlikely that there will be anything even remotely resembling us humans out there. Evolution probably won't have worked the exact same way in any other place. So when we finanlly find aliens, they may turn out to be hyper-intelligent slime molds or something... -
QNX is still free for non-comercial use. I have the CD for 6.2 stitting around my house... I also used OS/2 from version 2.1 until Version 4.0, but I wouldn't really consider it a hyper-alternative OS. Instead, it was the same sort of second place alternative as Linux is today. Lots of old OS/2 people seem to have moved to Linux, btw.

Doom 1 was the first FPS i played and I still love it. It may not have all the bells and whistles that some the modern games do, but it's great if you just want to engage in a bit of mindless Zombie-blasting. Has anyone here played it using one of the modern source ports that add OGL rendering and sometimes even 3D models are added.
-
I still play it on my PC using an emulator. Playing it with a mouse and keyboard makes it even better... Graphics-wise, it looks as good if not better than any PC FPS from that general time period. I like how it has a mix of mindless blasting and tactical elements. Moderns shooters seem to be either/or, with no good combo games. BTW, if you like Goldeneye 64, then also check out Perfect Dark, another great espianoge shooter from Rare. Except you play a hot chick in PD

Who here's tried out some of the VERY alternative OSes that are out there? By this, I mean, who has used alternative OSesbeyond the Linux/BSD scene on their PC? I know that's it's been something of a hobby for me. I've used BeOS (very cool), Syllable (looking good), AROS (a sweet implementaion of AmigaOS for modern x86 hardware) and I used to do stuff with SkyOS until the people developing it decided to start charging for it. They keep promising that they'll release a free version once version 5.0 is done, but 5.0 has been in the works for years and is now looking VERY stable and usable, yet still nothing...

Cherry OS did you discover it yet?
madcrow replied to finaldesign1405241487's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I had heard about this spat. It really sucks when commercial companies rip off the source code of various free software/open source projects and then pretend that they've done something special. I've been thinking about trying out PearPC, but I really don't see any need at this point. I do want to get a REAL G5 someday, though. -
OS-wise Mac OSX is by far the superior system. It's nice and stable with Mach/BSD underpinnings and the GUI, which combines the best features of old MacOS and NeXTStep... That being said, the whole menu bar at the top of the screen doesn't work well on a modern hires multitasking system. It was great on a singletasking OS running on a 9 inch screen, but in the modern era, it just doesn't work. That's the only qualm I have tho. I really wish that they had gone ahead and finished the PC version of OS X rather than abandoning it after a couple of Betas...
