In Singapore...the maximium internet connection speed is only a 25MB per second cable connection by Starhub and that 25MB is only a fraction of what the ISPs here can provide. In fact, there are only three...SingNet, Starhub and Pacific Internet that is providing residental internet service. The plan itself costs S$112.50 if I am not wrong and and the access time is unlimited.I pay for a SingNet 256KBps but I don't know if there is a possibility that it has been upgraded to 512KBps and I pay $56.90 for it monthly. Compared to what other countries are getting, I think internet plans are one of the most expensive in Singapore.

When I first saw Microsoft Powertoys last September...I thought they were really some tools that can really make XP more "powerpacked". From what I know now, it's merely a few tweaks with Tweak UI that you can find in system utilities programs like TuneUp Utilities 2004 which you can get for free and so on. The only useful tool I found there was the HTML Slideshow. If you really want to make XP more "powerpacked", get some programs by Stardock to change the visual stules and user interface and a couple of system utilities to optimize your system for maximium performance.

I bought this game when I was 12, ignoring my friend's advice of buying Halo: Combat Evolved when it just came out. When I first saw the review on the Computer Times, now also known Digital Life, I decided to check out the game by downloading and installing the trial. It seems very nice at first, until the game timed out by itself and I got a glimpse of the "Starkiller" torpedos or something and the destruction of the Donau was actually caused by few missiles. The typical German cruiser can withstand more than that...and when I first bought those "Javelin" missiles and shot them on Westpoint Academy...the station did not get destroyed...I did. Thought that they are virtually indestructible in the trial version so I bought the full retail version...found out that it's still the same and gradually lost interest in the game but I did earn 4 million credits buying diamonds from the Red Hessians base in some Omega 5 system and selling them at Leeds, travelling through systems via jumpholes. Get the Dromedary freighter for this kind of job since it has a 275 capacity, the ship with the most amount of storage space available. Here's the fuel for the flight, Lancers Reactor. Also, take note that the strategy I used to earn 4 million credits is not included in the guide. You have to cruise very carefully to avoid mines on the frontlines between the Corsairs and Red Hessians. Have your reputation fixed with the Red Hessians and be enemies with the Corsairs. Always wait for a Red Hessian patrol before proceeding to the jumphole behind enemy lines.

The end of Google Web Accelerator? I hope not but I seriously doubt that they have reached thei maximium capacity of user support especially when their GMail email service has its inbox growing every second for every user! My point is that this is just an excuse to stop any more downloads and Google has just put it in a nicer way to hear but after all, it's still in beta testing stage so there's nothing more we can comment on it. What do you all think?

Research: Really How Popular Are Blogs?
PC Astray replied to rhodesian.dragon's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You do have some point but you are not entirely right. How could the majority of the people resist the offer Google is providing in the form of free registration with Blogger? A blog would seem much cooler than writing a journal with a pencil and everyone is blogging so why not keep up with the trend? I agree with you that most blogs are a waste of storage but this is only your opinions and you can't really do much about it as long as Google continues with what they are doing. The staff obviously know what they are doing but this is their bid to gain popularity with more users. If you don't understand what I'm saying, don't bother... -
Remember the usual blue screen of death Windows (all) gives when it comes up with some critical error? (I see it often ever since I installed WhatPulse) Well, Microsoft Longhorn testers are now seeing the red screen of death. And about the security flaws you find in Windows XP, I don't think Longhorn will be as safe since Microsoft is always targeted by attackers so sooner of later, they find some exploits someway, somehow. For more information regarding the RSOD, refer to this articile.

You are definitely wrong. Microsoft Antispyware is based on GIANT Antispyware just after Microsoft bought the company and gave its user interface a new look It still connects to the GIANT company website for the latest definitions. But even in beta stage development, I do think Microsoft Antispyware ain't that bad only that you may wish to disable some of the "Security Agent Checkpoints" such as "Windows Messenger Service" (If you have already disabled the service via services.msc and "WiFi Connection" if you don't have one to make sure it doesn't take up too much resources.

Mac Mini Will it convert Windows users?
PC Astray replied to Space Orangutan #2's topic in Science and Technology
The Mac mini is iPod's companion, which crushed all other music players when Apple introduced it in 2001, simply because of its striking looks and a somewhat low price tag to boot when compared to other Macs that Apple has to offer but I bet I can build a budget small-form-factor PC much cheaper than S$928 which of course, will have its own pros and cons. What's so good about the Mac mini is because of its preinstalled Mac OS X and the iLife 05 suite. It's perhaps the best entry level PC you can get from a computer manufacturer since the features Apple has to offer in the mini is something you cannot find in an entry-level Dell which is oftcited as the most affordable PC brand in Singapore. All in a 1.32kg unit (from what I was told by Athena) that can be overclocked, the Mac mini is the perfect Windows desktop replacement and the big idea behind the Mac mini is that small budgets are not synonymous with small performance. If only Apple comes up with a killer gaming rig at this size...I'll rob the bank to get it. -
Notice from qwijibow: Coppied and pasted from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ correcting hostiong credits. Please take note that this program is still in beta test mode and there have been concerns about this product leaving you logged into sites as other users since it automatically stores and updates the content of pages accessed through it. The same thing happened to me when I visited the phpbb2 community forum. Notice from PC Astray: For your information, I did not just Copy & Paste this entire post and at least I made an effort to add in my opinions...No offense but I do not see the reason for doing this when I can see lots of people doing the same.

There are many reasons why people are switching over to Mozilla Firefox or other alternative web browsers and the main reason being the security of these browsers that seem to have less security vulnerabilities than IE but that will soon change as long as more users turn to such "safer" alternatives, attackers will soon follow suit so it isn't the amount of users downloading Firefox that worries me...it's the amount of attackers targeting it. Given Mozilla's status as an open source organisation, I trust that they will provide a swift response to these threats like what Microsoft did to get SP2.

I'm not sure if my reply suits your category but these are some sites that I frequent for news regarding the computing world other than OSes. Being only a Microsoft Windows user, I only frequent sites that contain more about Windows XP. I don't visit much sites since I'm still a student with many things to do, but unable to complete. Neowin.net - Where unprofessional journalism looks better: Probably one of the largest online community I know of, it has everything I need and the only problem lies with their server loading time of their forums. Most of the news here can also be seen from other news sites like WinInsider but I prefer Neowin than them since it's more convenient for me. The Channel Insider - Technology Channel News for IT Distributors, Resellers, VARs: Reliable insider information on emerging technology. ExtremeTech - Deep technology for enthusiasts and professionals - Build It, Tweak It, Know It. I got my PC specs from here with help from some kind guy working with Microsoft Singapore. CNET.com: One stop resource to everything that is related to the term "digital technology". (Well, perhaps not everything) LonghornFan.com - Microsoft Longhorn Windows Tips, Tweaks, Guides, Info, Downloads, Reviews & Blogs: Updates on the latest Microsoft OS's progress and other info.

I've tried using ZoneAlarm Version 5 and avast! Home Edition 4 last year and ZoneAlarm was unable to detect avast! HE4, AntiVir PE or even AVG Free Edition 6. There were no problems then, only that those two programs were really lagging the entire system badly as it was only running on 128MB of 266MHz RAM with alot of standard Windows XP features disabled. Until two hours ago, I tried using avast! Home Edition 4.6 with my pirated copy of InJoy Personal Firewall with all the features in avast! disabled except for realtime protection and I noticed it still takes up more resources than AntiVir PE (Update module memory used included) and AVG Free Edition 7 (Update module memory excluded) but the results may vary on different computers but to me, I will only trust AntiVir Personal Edition with my computer. avast! is good but I think it's bloated like ZoneAlarm with "extra" features like the stupid alarm notice when a virus is detected.

Anyone Old Enough To Have Played - WarCraft I, C&C I & Dune I ?
PC Astray replied to dissipate's topic in Computer Gaming
Believe it or not, I was already using "Blitzkrieg" with people on LAN in Read Alert when I was only 7 and I really have to thank the kind attendant for allowing an underaged student to do so. I just seem to build alot of light thanks until I have like seperate groups of around twenty each before flanking the enemy and at least one group to defend my base. I find all other units useless except for Rocket Infantry for anti-air since they're simply cost effective. And no, I haven't played the other games... -
Google didn't state whether they allow this kind of software and while upgrading their GMail BETA, it seem to break GMail Drive shell extension's ability to connect to the respective accounts but this doesn't mean that they have already imposed a ban on them because it they do, it will lose its popularity. Besides, who needs "infinite" email storage when they only recieve mostly text based emails that don't even take up 10KB? Well, maybe they'll be "shared" but since alot of people use GMail for online backup solution purposes, I don't think Google will do such a thing.

I've used OpenOffice 1.1.2 last year since I couldn't afford Microsoft Office but I switched over to the latter after I found out a way to do so since there was some problem with OpenOffice's Presentation and Microsoft's PowerPoint, where the bullet I was trying to rid of will appear there, no matter what but I don't know if this has been corrected or whatsoever but Singapore's Armed Forces administration is switching over to Open Source soon and this is their first step.

Mcfee Saves' The Day correction of vunerabilities
PC Astray replied to darkool's topic in Security issues & Exploits
darkool, even though I have no right to say this as a member of Xisto but I can't help but notice that most of your topics are just Copy & Paste. This topic is almost the same about Trend Micro you posted about earlier... -
Of all the bands you have listed above, I find Blink 182 the best since I haven't heard of most of the bands above since I've been listening to Japanese anime music for sometime but either way, I still like First Date and All The Small Things which is kind of old but still...a Blink 182 classic.

Why Is Astahost Loading Slow ?
PC Astray replied to l337 Nurse Pedestrian's topic in Websites and Web Designing
It depends on what kind of advertising server you are using. Refer to the Advertising forum for more details. -
You need a codec in order to run such files and they are available here at: http://www.free-codecs.com/ I would recommend K-Lite Mega Codec Pack since I use it myself or you can install standalone ones.

Microsoft Service Pack 2 Cd (free) Windows XP
PC Astray replied to denis's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I ordered mine this morning at 2am and I just recieved it within 13 hours. This is the second time Microsoft made me impressed...other than taking over GIANT Antispyware, slapping a new skin on it and called it Microsoft Antispyware BETA 1 but well, I still have to thank the local postal service too. -
Editing The Apps That Open At Start Up. help please
PC Astray replied to emotion's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Try running services.msc to disable some services that don't appear in msconfig like AntiVir Update or whatsoever. Disabling services and hardware such as USB ports via the Device Manager which is accessible from Control Panel you won't need also speeds up your boot. -
I Need Good Programs? good programs
PC Astray replied to il-cs-clan's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
There are alot of freeware programs that perform even as well as Paint Shop Pro 9 and I would highly recommend Paint.NET 2.0 or GIMP 2.2 but you can try out others from here: http://download.cnet.com/s/digitalphoto-editing-processing/windows/= And of course, there are many other ways but if you get caught of whatsoever, I won't take the blame. My cousin downloads trial versions of shareware and get keygens or even cracks for them but I, an honest Boy Scout will stick to freeware -
Everything built-in? I don't remember seeing an adblocking feature in Opera browser and that's one of the reasons why I chose Mozilla Firefox over it. I agree that Opera is the fastest browser but it also consumes more resources than Firefox and since I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall, I don't use Opera as my firewall can't filter out ads. I am very conscious about the amount of physical memory used so I always aim for resource light programs. If you are stuck to IE, I would recommend Maxthon Lite since I've been using it for a while but I am not ashamed of myself using it as I update my Windows XP manually instead of enabling Automatic Updates.
