  1. I know what a terabyte is. :P The comparision to the 250MB was to add further relief to the contrast, and the obscene nature of having a terabyte of e-mail storage when most e-mail are only a few k.
  2. The old ones got much hotter then the new ones do, but you have to consider that it's all relative as they're built on a bigger process then the Intel processors, the Athlon 64's are still .13micron when the P4's have moved to .09micron. If your going with an older AMD processor just make sure you spen an extra $20 or so and pick up a good heatsink/fan from Thermaltake and some Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound and you'll be good.
  3. There aren't the 50 to 60 thousand on at any given time that classic CS had/has, but there's still at least 25 thousand on at most times which is still pretty hard to match for any game and 1.6's player base built up over years. I personally never liked CS all that much, but the game always kept me coming back like nothing else even if it was only to play with the folks in my clan. While the guns are still the same the gameplay isn't, even if it's very similar, and it takes quite a bit of initial adjustment to from 1.6. I wouldn't hesitate about buying it though, you'll be getting Half-Life 2 with it which is an amazing game.
  4. There was a mention that they were going to be releasing a pc version so I'm hopefull that'll happen.
  5. Bad warez monkey!!! /me pulls out hot branding iron and pokes the warez monkey several timesShoo warez monkey, everyone knows Longorn isn't out yet and ya shouldn't wonder why a product that's not done doesn't work./me pulls out the big ole freakin trout to own the warez monkey
  6. Like was said it's largely dependant upon how much your willing to spend, though I'd probably just avoid the whole over clocking thing for now since, and don't take this as an insult or anything especially if I'm wrong, you don't sound like the most knoweledgable person about hardware and don't want to wreck your new investment out of the box. Also I'm not quite sure what this seperate PCI card holder is that your talking about since the only computer I've ever seen where the PCI slots weren't directly on the mobo was my old IBM 486 that had a board perpendicular to the mobo to hold them. Unless you've put a new video card in sometime in the last two to three years you'll also be wanting to get at least an entry level one of those even if you won't be gaming. Another thing will also be a new Power Supply Unit since the new processors really need at least a 350W PSU to run comfortably, which means it may be smarter to just spring for a new case like the X-Dreamer II case which for about $50 comes with the casse and 350W PSU which is only about $10-15 more then a name brand PSU. If your looking to go with a more budget price for parts but still want good performance I'd suggest the AMD Sempron 3100+ that uses the Paris core and is socket 754. It is by far the best budget processor, an Athlon 64 with the ability to do 64 bit computations disabled but that's still moot as it'll be a while before 64 bit programs become common, and since it is socket 754 will allow you to upgrade to an Athlon 64 on the same motherboard down the road. I'd suggest getting 512MB of PC3200 for your ram, like the Corsair Value Select 512MB PC3200, and a mobo like the Albatron K8X800 which is a good price with good features and integrated sound and ethernet. What video card to go with would depend largely on how much of a gamer you are so I'll reserve any comment on that, but this is an excellent budget system and while you'd be spending a touch more if you can't afford to upgrade reguraly, as why you'd probably be buying a budget system, it'll last a good while and be more cheaply upgradeable for quite a while. No matter what your going with though use ww.newegg.com, it's by far the best computer store on the web. The prices are almost always the lowest, and even when they're not they're really close and the excellent service, reliability, and shipping speed, I've gotten everything I've ordered early or on the first two days of the arrival window, more then make up for it. Anyone who's bought from them will say the same most likely. Edit to ssjojo- The mobo's for a P3 450, it's not even worth upgrading without taking a step up to the current class of processers.. To get one over 1Ghz you'll spend more then on the Sempron 3100+ and it's a pointless upgrade as you'll be upgrading again in no time and have spent far more money.
  7. Well they were able to be sell the A labeled processor for a bunch less then the higher clocked versions that came out months earlier. This allowed them to still offer more budget minded customers the ability to have a processor that's built on the newer core with new features, and a smaller core which consumes less energy and pruces less heat, all while costing them less to make. Plus it probably ended up being cheaper for Intel to underclock their faster processors on the newer core then spend extra money developing a slower set of processors. When these came out though it was almost 3 years ago too so they were pretty decent and an excellent buy for those in the know.
  8. The only WGE111's on Ebay were almost $100. I had ordered one off Newegg earlier tonight for about $70, but I've since cancelled and go with the WRT54G router from Linksys instead since I've been informed that it can be set up to run as a wireless bridge. That and Newegg has a one day sale on it for $50 with free shipping which is almost $30 cheaper then the WGE111. Thanks for the help all.
  9. Giant squids own you. On the other hand regular sized squids are quite yummy for eating, especially deep fried.
  10. Hmm, the thought of sanding or polishing my rear is unsettling. Anyway I just use Endust of a paper towel, while it's probably not the ideal solution it's worked well enough and hasn't damaged the screens of anything I've cleaned.
  11. I'd love to have a Mac, considered a Mac laptop for a while, but it's just so impracticale for me being a hardcore gamer with no software almost, and the few things that do get ported being months late and costing $50 years after release.
  12. You might have a great processor to overclock there my friend if your lucky. If it's a P4 1.8a then it's built of the Northwood core meaning that instead of the 400Mhz bus that it's underclocked to, it's acctually built on a 533Mhz bus effectivly giving a 50% performance increase to 2.4Ghz. The beauty of this is because that's the speed those processors were meant to run at and on that bus it produces almost no extra heat, and the dangers unsually inherint in overclocking are all but non-existent, all the with one little change in the bios. I specifically bought that proc for my last computer for that reason, though some won't do it as well mine set itself to 2.4 the first time I booted it up, so hope you have yourself one of those.
  13. Who needs a terabyte?!? o.O I don't even come close to the 250MB limit of my Hotmail account and I'll get well over a hundred spam any given day. I've been wanting to try G-Mail but no one will ever invite me. /me cries I'll burn em all.
  14. This is just really lame. EA was beat and they knew it , why they dropped their games prices, so they just went and eliminated the competition. I really prefered the SEGA games and now that there's no competition, EA also owns the rights to Arena Football, NFL Europe, and something else I'm forgetting, the quality of the EA games will start to stagnate fairly soon probably. Not only that but now SEGA's sold Visual Concepts, the 2K series developer since the start, and the 2K brand to Take-Two and are out of the sports game. To top things off EA's even swayed ESPN from the 2K camp and now have a 15 year contract with EA.
  15. Eh, I was really interested in Guild Wars when I first heard about it and started reading up on it, I was really excited for the open test weekend thing they did back in October I think it was. After that though my interest in the game just kind of died. It's horribly linear, their doesn't seem to be all that much to differentiate charecters, and to be succesful you really have to play with other people while I prefer to solo around %80 of the time I play a MMORPG. So it seems like it's just going to end up being a MMORPG 3D version of Diablo, which shouldn't be surprising since the developers were key members of the team at Blizzard that created the Diablo games, and while that will probably please alot of people it just doesn't seem to float my boat. Granted the lack of a subscription fee means I may still get it, especially because the fiance loves it, but if there was a standard MMORPG pay system with it I think far less people would be interested for $15 a month.
  16. Well I'm a horrible Warcraft player so there take that!!! You could probably take me down with just two hunters and bear druid thingy I'm that bad. I'm just not good at RTS games though, most of them are too fast for my slow handed have to think about thigs play style. That and I'm a turtle.
  17. I acctually never bothered to pick up the full version of AoE2, probably since it still sells for like $20 or $30, came close more then a couple times but usually bought something else. I did play the demo for the Conquerers quite a bit since I got that on a PC Gamer disc once and it was rather fun, it's too fast for me anyway though since I can never play fast enough to win.
  18. I picked up Age of Myth when it first came out after being hooked on the demo, and I enjoyed it quite a bit beating the single player in less time then I had any game prior to that. I sucked at the multiplayer though, as I do with every RTS , but I still put in quite a few hours and read tons of stuff to try and get better. I haven't played it in a while though since I lent it to my friend and I haven't seen him in a while, but I've been fairly tempted to just buy the combo pack now that it can be had for the same price as just the expansion.
  19. No the series is still alive and kicking, EA just announced the third Red Alert game even, Westwood just bit EA's axe and EA LA has been handling the series since Yuri's Revenge and Generals. It's a shame though since Westwood was really a great developer and I'll always have a soft spot for em. I really hope though that the next C&C game will do a little to modernize the series in terms of gameplay, I've been playing Generals for a review and it's starting to feel sort of clunky when there's been so many improvements in other games over the years. If nothing else though the left click for everything has to go.
  20. Red Alert was the game that got me hooked on gaming, fond memories, and was my first game I owned so while I was around I didn't play them till a couple years down the road. As much as videogames have caused me to slack off over the years I think Red Alert's still gotten me into far more trouble then any other game lol.
  21. I like Sims 2 alot, my biggest complaint with it is that I feel like whenever I play I have to be ready to sit there and invest a couple of hours in it, no 15 minute quickie sessions. Could just be the way the games structered, but that's kept me from playing nearly as much as I otherwise would, which has been quite a bit anyway.
  22. I love Halo 2, but there's no way the single play can even touch that of Half-Life 2. While not as revolutionary as the original, it really upped what's expected from a fps just like the original with a slick immersive presentation and an actual use for physics in a game beyond making things look neat.
  23. I recently purchased myself an XBox, but now I find myself in a pickle trying to get it networked up without having to take it and set it by the router everytime I want to get on Live. The situation is that there's two phone jacks in the entire house, neither of which by where I desire the XBox to live, the router, Netgear WGR614v4, is hooked up to one and the computers all connect to it wirelessly. I'm done trying to figure out a way to get it to work without buying any more networking equipment, even though I still don't like paying $70 to $100, so I'd like your opinion as to what to use. Right now I'm really leaning towards the Netgear WGE111, which can be seen here. It's not as horribly priced as some of the other ones, and being Netgear I'm assuming far less likely to have problems with the router. Any thoughts on this, or any other hardware that will work?
