  1. If you don't want to spend anything one option is to download Flash Macromedia MX at http://www.adobe.com/ with a 30 day trial and search the web for some pre made templates and just customize them to your needs. The only problem with this approach is that there will be no way, after the 30 days is up, to update your site - unless of course you pay for flash or find "some other" way to make it work. There are plenty of programs you could use that are on the net for free though too. You may also already have MS OFFICE - If you do you may have FontPage - You could use that to do your site also - though it isn't the best it will work and it also has a bunch of pre-existing templates. Good Luck
  2. What kind of animation are you looking for??If you want something for free - do you have anything to offer for trade?? Something useful to somebody?? Depending on what you want done and what you have to offer in exchange you might be able to get somebody to do it for you.
  3. I work for others in a design environment. I work with an art team and we do all our corporate pages for several of our companies. I think ones opinion as to what is "professional" is subjective - if you are interested in doing web design as a job or just graphic design you must first begin to get over the idea that unless you are "the best" or close to it that you aren't "professional" - Where I work there are plenty of people helping to make hundreds of $$millions$$ a year for our corporations doing many different jobs from graphic design to upper management and support who consider themselves "professional" and they are really more 'hacks' than the people on forums like this who consider themselves 'hacks'. So really professionalism is relative and quite subjective to ones opinion of ones self. Have more self-confidence. People who can do what is going on at sites like this - search for answers and learn how to use software & hardware - are much brighter people usually than those who go college for years.A degree is just paper.
  4. Interesting, considering the internet makes possible the technology that the book 1984 was based - A communications system capable of gathering audio and video from peoples homes and public places - delivering the info to a central HQ - and filtering out the members of society who didn't agree with the political machine. Strange parallel that the earliest year people were registering domain names was right about 1984.- also the same year Apple unveiled that commercial based on the book 1984 that was pulled after it aired once because it was so creepyApple - First Personal computers1984 - Book outlining governmental control of populations using centralized communications systems to monitor thier activities.Apple opens pandora's box of personal computing making possible a future centralized communication system - year 1984Apple = Evil?Adam and Eve eat of a forbidden fruit and thereby become concious of the struggle of good and evil - the forbidden fruit?? An apple.Put that one in your pipe and smoke it.....
  5. Ok. I think this was a good topic to post a tutorial on actually. I was going to post a tutorial on batch files as well - seeing as how most have forgotten of them and the rest never heard of 'em. There actually are some good uses for batch files still believe it or not but I won't go into them now. I think we should make a series of these. I will post one soon - maybe somebody else can post another too - outlining thier uses for batch files now-a-days. I wanted to point out a couple things here though.Echo (command)Echo displays the text following it to the screen. The only way this really works though is if you first turn off the local echo of your batch commands. This is why most who have looked at a batch file are familiar with the Echo Off command. In the preceding example this command was left out - rendering the example a little confusing probably to some as each command was displayed instead of hidden and thus causing commands using echo to be displayed twice.Start (command)I believe this command is relatively useless because in a batch file you can just invoke a program using the command interpreter. So instead of using:Start notepad.exeYou could just type notepad.exeProvided you are in current path that notepad.exe is located or the path has been previously set using the command:Set path=Anyways time to go home more later in the week. Looking forward to another batch tutorial.
  6. Rapco - I would definitely make sure you 'mount' the drive on a computer running a NTFS platform such as NT, 2000 or XP. Preferably the platform this drive would have been formatted with in order to really rule out the physical damage issue. It sounds like the drive should at least be intermittent, from what you describe. When mounted on the correct platform - if there is truly a physical problem you, I would expect the drive to befunctioning intermittently. For instance perhaps you might be able to read the contents of the drive but have errors when you try to access the actual files or just some of the files.
  7. Why does that not surprise me? That's why Bill Gates has so much money. The world pays for his software while he pays for none. That seriously is really funny though.
  8. There really isn't much audible difference between higher end sound cards. Once you get into 20 & 24 bit digital sound sampled at 48 khz or higher 90% of people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. There might be an occassional issue with slight sound coloration which, unless you are mixing down audio for a professional application, wouldn't matter and you wouldn't notice. As far as ones built right into the motherboard, the major issues are really dealing with MIDI and the occasional IRQ issues usually only when you add extra sound cards. Most cards come with a satisfactory A/D D/A chipset - to convert digital sound to analog and vice versa with little discernable sound fidelity difference, again, unless you are a sound engineer or pro-musician and even then you may not notice much difference. So the only real problem is when you are using your computer for professional audio. In my opinion, if you aren't using it for pro-audio don't bother wasting your money.
  9. I would say between running win 95 and IE 5 you have more problems than is worth running your computer for. If this is the only computer you have I suggest a couple of things.1. Beg Borrow or Steal a newer computer. Well don't actually steal it but you should be able to spend roughly 25-50 bucks or trade something for a newer computer than the one you currently have.2. Get Windows 98 SE - somebody you know probably has a copy they don't use at all they would sell for 5 bucks or even just give to you rather than throw away.3. Update IE - you should be able to get a free update online - check msn.com4. Get a firewall - Zone Alarm is a relatively decent free one - not the best but it's shareware will help to knock out 85% of the crap entering your computer.5. Try running your computer without going on line. The next time you reformat - wait until you test the computer for a few days before going online. If it works offline then you definitely are having issues with old software and/or security isues with IE. If not then you are having another problem not related to the internet. 6. In the future when you format always plan ahead and backup important files and drivers and gather the software you will be installing first BEFORE you format just in case you are missing something. It's easier to locate and salvage before you format.Good luck
  10. Hey I'm just curious if participating in this forum, other than to help answer others questions and requests - such as soliciting answers, counts as posts for hosting. I'm not trying to be a meiser, just curious really.
  11. Some may be familiar with the concept of Enhanced Audio CD's. For those that aren't, an Enhanced CD is much like a traditional Red-Book audio CD (the normal format for audio cd's - what you would purchase in a store). The only difference is that, in addition to being able to put your CD into a CD player and listen to music, you can also put the disc in a computer and access more features such as graphics files, more songs, or even create custom navigatable menu's and programs. All this enhances a consumers experience of your media. There is much to be learned about the topic and far more to be imagined as far as what can be done with this format. The best thing to do to get started is to learn how to make the most basic format of an Enhanced CD and place some files on the CD in addition to the CD Audio. This tutorial will assume you have a basic knowledge with computers and burning traditional audio CD's. The purpose of this tutorial is to raise awareness of the Enhanced CD format and it's uses and teach those who already know how to burn a traditional Audio CD how to utilize the Enhanced CD format to maximize resource utilization on each disc. 1. First you need to acquire the software to create the CD. There are many programs you can use. My usual program of choice is Roxio. I couldn't find a trial or shareware version of Roxio out there but most programs you normally use to burn CD's have the ability to create Enhanced CD's built in, most don't realize or notice and it goes unused until discovered. Musicmatch is another program that has Enhanced CD capability. I found a shareware version available at : Sofotex.com 2. Each program is a little different as to how you have to create an enhanced CD - a short reference to the help file should tell how to open an Enhanced CD session. Most programs, once you start an Enhanced CD session, should support a basic drag and drop interface and are divided into to segments. a. Audio Files (for normal CD Audio) b. Computer FIles (additional files to be stored on the CD) 3. Once you have opened an Enhanced CD session, the next step is to select the files you want to play as normal CD Audio. Drag and drop these to the corresponding CD Audio section of your session. 4. Select the file(s) to be added as computer files (i.e. graphics. add. music, etc.) and drop them to the resepective section for computer files in your session. 5. If you wish the CD to play automatically when the CD is inserted into the computer, you must construct and add a Autorun.inf file. This is basically just a text file with a couple labels and some commands to run files. I will give an example of a basic Autorun.inf which will run a program called startme.exe. ******* Autorun.inf ********** [autorun] open=startme.exe ******* End of file *********** It is crucial that this file be named Autorun.inf in order for the computer to recognize that it must be run upon insertion of the disk without any user input. startme.exe can be substituted for another executable file or the file name of a graphics file or another file. If the substituted file is not an executable file (.exe, .com) whether or not it will autoplay will be dependent on that computers current file associations to tell it what program to use to open the file. The Autorun.inf file must be dropped into the computer files section. 6. Once you have your files placed in the proper sections of Audio files and Computer files and you have your Autorun.inf file added to the computer files section, you are ready to burn your first Enhanced CD. Burn the cd just as you would any regular Audio CD. A few things to mention about Enhanced Audio CD's. Enhanced audio CD's are a little different in the way they are burned. They are burned in two sessions. The first session is to burn the audio in Red Book Format. The second session is to burn the Computer files. Once you get the hang of how to make a basic Enhanced Audio CD, you are ready to step up your presentation of your materials. To create custom menu's there are many programs available to you. 3D-Studio is a popular program that allows you to create a 3D world that users can navigate and experience the additional content visually. Flash Macromedia MX is another excellent program to use that you can add custom menu's and graphical interfaces with. You can download a free trial version of both pieces of software from Macromedia's Web Site This should get your foot in the door to the world of Enhanced CD's. Once you know the basics, what you can do with this media is limited only by your imagination.
  12. I agree with you and I believe that since internet and virtual reality did not yet exist during the time of plato and socrates that the Allegory of the Cave was an attempt to portray our normal perception of reality as possibly being merely as shallow as a virtual reality game seems to us now. The matrix was an excellent portrayal of this view point as in life you are unable to remove yourself enough to prove that life is merely an illusion or not and yet in the electronic world where you can tell there is a difference in reality, you can still exit the electronic world and prove it's inferiority to reality. The matrix sort of bridged the gap to say well what if you take what you know as not real (electronic games etc.) and make it so people couldn't tell if they were in the game or not? You will invariably have people who don't know that the game is not the reality. I suggest the defense of socrates as further reading on the topic for any interested parties.
  13. Windows gives that error for many hardware issues that it can't identify or contain and thus it crashes your system. I would check in the control panel for any devices causing a conflict. You might need to disable some hardware or change irq's on something or it's possible you didn't have a correct driver installed for something.
  14. Web rings make an excellent cross-promotional tool. You could also register with search engines. There are things you can do to make your site more visible to searches - some that cost some that don't but your best bet is probably to gather as much info as possible and determine your needs vs. wants and make your decision from there.
  15. The only way I know of is to actually get Flash MX from Macromedia.com and learn how to use it. After a few tutorials you can generally get the idea and start to do your own stuff. If you are looking for a builder that does the work for you, I don't think one exists that I know of. Although there are plenty of freeware flash templates that you can find on the web and use to make your own site that way. Once you get the idea, you can use some parts from one and put in another, etc.
  16. I would also suggest flash for more serious work it produces professional results in comparison if you know what you're doing. I know a free trial download is available for like 30 days at http://www.adobe.com/ and you can also access tutorials and sample programs made with flash. Although depending on what you really need to do, since you didn't really specify, you may not even need flash - you may need something all together different.
  17. The reason for programming anything using C++ versus assembler is the sheer amount of coding it requires to program anything using assembler without using libraries of existing pre-programmed functions and procedures. Even in the case of programming a basic(not the language) OS(which is miniscule in size compared to current program sizes) you would expect to spend countless hours structuring the thing and be balding after debugging it. Add to that the fact that it's virtually impossible to use a top down approach and that without many supporting libraries your results will vary widely depending on the machine you are using the OS on. At this point I'm really quite curious why you would want to program your own OS with so many already available. Maybe I'm ignorant, but it seems there would be more fruitful ventures to explore than that. In any case good luck at that. You can locate a compiler with a simple web search for C++ or Assembler.Hope that helps
  18. I think in order to really properly diagnose this problem you have to tell us what the error message is after you changed the disk from the primary drive to the secondary. It should no longer give you the press ctrl-alt-del message. Depending on what it says will determine your next step. If you are able to boot the computer and visually see an icon representation in windows then the drive is plugged in correctly and the jumpers are set properly and the partition is still set properly or it wouldn't even recognize anything. I would suggest you run norton utilities to check this drive and see what happens. You may very well end up not being able to recover these files so be prepared to deal with that fact.It should be one of the following things:1.Access level error (ie windows XP, NT)2.physical error (controller, heads, etc.)3.virus4.program write error (a program encountered an error while writing and wrote over the FAT)In any case running norton utilities and telling more about the error and circumstances surrounding this error would help to paint a clearer picture of the problem. It is doubtful this drive is intermittently working as previously stated or it would work ocassionally. In the event this is a physical error this may have been the case once but the problem has become so severe that the drive no longer works at all.Good Luck
  19. In my 15 years of computer "experiences" I have found an abnormal amount of Seagate and Western Digital hard disks with faulty conrollers that seem to burn out after about a year or two. But really it probably all comes down to what manufacturer they are getting parts from and in all manufactured parts businesses, there are batches of bad parts. Through some cosmic force they always manage to sneak a few through and they end up in disk drives anyways. Even still all seem to last about a year - just long enough for the manufacturers warranty to run out. Oh well.Good Luck
  20. There are literally a million sites out there if you want to download midi files of classical music. I suggest you go to a popular search engine like google.com and try to search for ".mid classical music" you should find tons of stuff that waybe prepared to sift for the pieces you want.Good Luck
  21. I'm sure there has to be a freeware program to do that. If you go to google.com and search for .mov to .swf converters you should get something. If not you can download the Flash Macromedia MX from macromedia.com and get a 30 day trial version and it can definitely do the conversion for you. If you can't figure out how to use it to do the conversion then you can search for tutorials on macromedia.com.Good Luck
  22. You have to enable active desktop first in order to do what you are asking. To do this go to your desktop and right click the desktop and choose properties. You may already be familiar with that step. You are also going to need some flash background to do this as well. You will need to get Flash MX to do this. If you go to macromedia.com you can download a 30 day trial and get some tutorials on how to start using the program. Good Luck
