I use 9.2 on duron 700 and 64 ram, i installed everything. It was stable ,but slow (I used kde). It should works quite well. I don't know what do you wont to use this computer for but win98 is better for common using.

Problem with IE is good pretext to start using Mozilla Firefox .It is the best browser I have ever used .You can export your bookmarks ,cookies and passwords from IE into MF

Few years ago linux was really unfriendly for common user. But now linux is more flexible, drivers are generally available in internet ,you can even play many games.It is no problem to install simultaneously windowsXP and linux (you can download it).This is easy way to to acquaint this great system.But when computer has no internet connection linux is not recommended for games or entertainment but is still good in office or for programers.And is more stable then Windows

I think that linux is better. It has much more virtues then windows:is free, safe and stable. There are many servers included in Linux, so shouldn't to hesitate.
