  1. I am in a similar position to the OP. I have pretty much got comfortable with html and css and I am not sure which part to learn next.Java looks like it would be quite difficult to me. It's great that there are so many free scripts available out there however I would be more comfortable knowing how to do it myself. That way if I wanted to customize the script I would know what to change etc.Where as the PHP I have seen seems a little more logical and closer to a combination of css and html (in a way). As for SQL I know very little about that and although I understand it's a database, I don't totally understand how it works in relation to your site. For example, does it hold information that can be pulled out on to your site or does it store information which is input through your site? Maybe both... who knows. I have not delved in to it too much. Web design is not as easy as some people think. You have to learn so much and then after all the hard work you have to work even harder to get people to look at your site. It's still a very satisfying way to keep the brain working though!
  2. If you want something really basic but extremely helpful then take a look at this site. On just one page it tells you the most basic information that you need to start off learning html. The best way to learn it is to type what you see for yourself. Just open a notepad, type what you see and then save it as whatever you want to call it.html Usually when you are setting up your own website, the main document will either be called home.html or index.html. There is soooo much to learn but there is loads of information out there. As per the previous suggestions w3schools.com is also very good however try not to get too overwhelmed by the amount of information. Learn some html first until you become comfortable setting up a basic page, once you have that under your belt then you can look towards css. CSS makes life a lot easier! But it really helps to understand the basics first. As you learn, if you get stuck or don't understand something, then I am sure there would be someone here who could help you out! Good luck to you! I am also learning myself, there's something new every second in web design!
