Macs

Recommended Posts

Yo, i'm a fellow mac user, i think macs are way better than PC's, we should have a mac section for mac users to talk, my dad got vista and he's had problem after problem with compatibility issues and also programs keep freezing, the computer is like 1-2 weeks old and it's crashing constantly.I have a home computer and it's completely useless, got millions of virus's. No wonder i got a mac and thank god i did ;)Macs Rule ;)Everyone get one!

@Lewisthemusician: Please post in the correct section next time. This is not a tutorial or how-to topic which is where you posted before. We do have a Mac section and I have moved it to the proper area...MacOS ;)Your dad is probably having issues with that computer because it's using Windows Vista. No one said it was a stable OS...heck even Windows XP is not 100% stable. But I'm sure if he goes back to using Windows XP, it will be much better in terms of performance and using other programs that he's having compatibility issues with. The war will never end between these two operating systems (Mac and Windows). I personally am a Windows user but love how the Mac works. Simplicity is one word that comes to mind. But for those who have been a long time Windows user (like me), converting will not be as simple. For your every day newbie user to computers in general, if they have to start off using a computer, I do recommend the Mac over Windows. Better yet, get one of the newer Macs where it will run Mac and Windows (using Bootcamp). The "better" or two worlds in one computer ;)Yep. The MacOS code does seem to have some *nix code in it, which is why it's very robust for the most part when compared to Windows. Unix is a very old operating system, but when you want stability and better performance, I think it's hands down one of the best operating systems to use.

I know a ton of people who run some pretty serious software and hardware on vista and love it. Others hate it. Similarly I know alot that love macs and alot that hate macs. Hardware and operating systems will be a battle that is probably never ending as long as we're given the choice especially since people like a variety of things. Windows, *nix, MacOS, all of them have pros and cons regardless of what you want to admit. Windows has more commercially supported software, *nix has more power and flexibility, macos does what it does very well, but has some limits in the realm of software variety.

True, I just recently got my first Mac since I've been dying for one since 8 years ago when I was 8. I finally got one after my new HP bricked on my 3 times (3 separate laptops). With no better alternative, I made the fateful leap by smacking down double the price to get the Mac. A bit less features, but got what I wanted, a Mac with MacOS X, and a great machine.Macs are gaining a lot of grip at my school, with the laptop segment almost 60% PC - 40% Mac (of all people who uses their laptops at school, not counting ones at home). It's most popular amongst the grade 9 and 10s. Not so much the older grades. However, the trend is shifting to have the whole school. If I split that estimate even further, Apple overtook HP and Acer in one school year. People say it's just the Intel processor. I say it's because Apple finally nailed the correct laptop solution, but it so happens to have an Intel chip instead of the great PowerPC chip, which I'm still disappointed that they ditched it. They were so close to closing a deal with P.A. Semi to produce the next generation PowerPC chip that ran at about only 25W TDP (desktop, dual core).xboxrulz

Thats the thing though Mac computers have been a been a huge deal in schools for the last 10+ years, of course when you get a used outdated one they are fairly cheap then getting a brand new computer. For me though I have hated mac computer since the 1990 with the constant crashing and BWONG sound repeating itself over and over when it does crash. Of course the one thing Mac computers are having a problem on is playing games though, and although I have been out of touch on what Mac's can do, their set up could never play that many games, So has that change or are most Mac computers limited to what games can still be played on it?The only thing I know Mac are good for is heavy duty multimedia designing, I believe pixar uses Mac computers for their movies.

Yep! That's true. I've been playing Command & Conquer 3. It's my first game for my iMac 17" (old version). It's fun to play but sometimes it's lagging. Moreover, mac game need more specifications and space compare with windows.

I guess you don't have the glass and aluminium iMac with the powerful ATi Radeon HD 2600 PRO eh?

That thing is a monster!

Personally I think the new iMac's are ugly. But that's just me. I have a 17" iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo with the ATI card) I bought last year. Haven't gotten 10.5 yet, figured I walk in to the Apple store and pick it up when I do the rest of my Christmas shopping this year. I've talked to a couple people who swear 10.5 is faster than 10.4. Guess I'll find out soon. I have an old 2Ghz Celeron Dell laptop with XP Pro and only 512MB of ram (Max it would hold). The DVD/CD burner still reads discs, but won't burn anymore and the battery needs to be replaced. I usually end up running FreeSBIE on it most days. I have XP pro on my iMac I run via Parallels so I still have a windows box that runs Falcon 4.0 A:F without any problems.

A lot of the people I know, and my friends say they really hate macs. The fact is the only mac machines they have used are lower than OS X, so they've only experienced macs with OS 9, or 8. And truth be told, those OS's aren't that very great, and I would probably choose Windows over those ones. But OS X has really stepped it up, it's really easy and fun to use, and the GUI is amazing. The only mac I own right now, is a old iBook clamshell G3, it not be very fast, it's only 366mhz, but it's running pretty fast with Panther. I do my school work on it with no problems at all. I tend to get more work done on my mac, than my windows machines. I'm going to upgrade this Christmas hopefully to a Intel based mac from my old PowerPC. Another thing that I hate when people say they hate macs, is the "one-click mouse" thing. The whole reason behind the one click mouse, was to have it so it wasn't confusing, you only had to push 1 button. But they've changed it with the new macs, you can just use 2 fingers with the track pad, and it will right click, and even the new mighty mouses have a right click. It's not even that hard to click if you have a old mac, you just have to push the ctrl key, and click.

With MacOS X Leopard, you can install Boot Camp and install Windows natively to play all your favourite games without buying a crappy PC. However, just a note, Leopard has its fair share of problems, so I'd wait for 10.5.1 if I were you for them to iron out the first batch of bugs.

That is true, a lot of people are still thinking back to pre-MacOS X and haven't looked at the new MacOS X and its stability and performance. Also, what's sad is that most people don't see the power of UNIX because they've been blinded by Microsoft and their antics.

I know that in general Macs are less susceptible to viruses and are more stable, but it depends on the user. Your dad probably just isn't a good computer user. What I'm trying to say is that I've had a windows machine for six years and don't even run Anti-virus software on it. I don't need to because I'm just careful. So for people like your dad the mac might be the way to go, but for a savvy user, there is nothing wrong with windows.
