Paramount & Dreamworks Drops Bluray Support

Recommended Posts

Announced last month on August 21, 2007, Paramount & Dreamworks will drop Blu-ray support and backing only HD-DVD. The decision behind this is because the two studios claim that the HD DVDs are "market-ready technologies" and that the cost for manufacturing HD-DVDs are cheaper than Blu-ray discs.

The releases will cover those produced by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The first HD DVD to be released by Paramount under this exclusivity to the format is Blades of Glory on August 28 (which is now released), followed by Transformers and Shrek the Third.

"I believe HD-DVD is not only the affordable high-quality choice for consumers but also the smart choice for Paramount," said Brad Grey, the company's chairman and chief executive officer.

For more details read here.

I myself, cheered for this announcement as I'm an HD-DVD backer myself (even though I have yet to have the means to buy a player, because the discs itself are still too expensive for me)

I think this fight is silly! its VHS V BETA all over agian 25 years later...You would had though Sony would have learned!! they took a beating last time and lots millions on the superior BETA technology.I think that this fight will go on for a few more years yet, but whats funny is by the time we get a winner and get used to its format - there will be a NEW product out there!!I am not buying any new player for a few years till theres an outright winner, I think most people are doing this also.In a way by not buying a player we are also fueling the fight because the market the two formats are trying to win is very small at the moment and not rising in numbers for instance like when DVD came out.I think it will be another 5 years before these players become natural in every home.
