I have managed to install a copy of apache on my win xp machine, but that was using xampp. Its a great program that contains many other server features, like

Apache, MySQL, PHP + PEAR, Perl, mod_php, mod_perl, mod_ssl, OpenSSL, phpMyAdmin, Webalizer, Mercury Mail Transport System for Win32 and NetWare Systems v3.32, Ming, JpGraph, FileZilla FTP Server, mcrypt, eAccelerator, SQLite, and WEB-DAV + mod_auth_mysql.

Its easy to install and easy to use, so if your looking for a test server, or want to get a home server started - this is the program to use. It works on all OS's and is free!
