Hibernate

hi alli want to enable hibernating on my computer with windows xp2; i go to control panel>>power options, then hibernate tab; i enabled hibernate, when i click apply or ok, then a window titled "power policy manager unable to reserve hibernate file" informs "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"i tried many times to enable it, but it's the same every timecan anyone help me please?thank you very much

Not every machine has hibernate as an option. Please try to close all your programs before you hibernate. If it doesn't help, please read the instruction manual that came with your computer or motherboard.xboxrulz

in order for hibernation to work, you need as much free space on your hard disk as the size of the RAM in the computer. So if you have 2Gb of RAM, you'll need 2Gb of free space on the hard drive. If there's enough space, windows will create a file named hiberfil.sys in the root of your system drive (so it's usualy c:\hiberfil.sys , it's a hidden system file).If the file already exists, but hibernation isn't enabled then you should try removing it in safe mode.

this computer i used to hibernate it before; but after formating, i can't hibernate it. i closed all programs but it's the same.

there is enough space on the hard disk and i found the hiberfil.sys file; so what i have to do, delete this file in safe mode? and if i delete it can i hibernate the machine later?

You need to delete the hiberfil.sys. Use unlocker or some other program that can close handles on processes while they're running. Delete the file, restart, then enable hibernation.

I would turn on your computer and push the F8 key, before the windows logo appears to get the boot up menu to appear (press the button multiple times, before the windows logo appears). Then select the safe mode option. Once your computer boots into safe mode, go to my computer, go to the hard drive, and to c:\. Then go to view --> options, and make sure that show hidden and operating system files is checked. Then look for the file, and delete it if it is there. Also try enabling hibernation while in safe mode, to see if that works.

Perform a search for "hibernate hotfix microsoft". This should point you to an article to contact. Submit your email address and they should send you a hotfix file to add the Hibernate button.-Spiderman
