Laptop Restarting On Its Own

My laptop has been recently rebooting on it's own when I'm using it. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing when this happens. I just formatted and installed Windows XP on this machine a few weeks ago. Not sure if there is some program that might be causing this problem.

I checked the Event Viewer to see if it provided any information on this and all I see that might be alarming is under the Application area. I have 2 warnings that repeat itself a handful of times.

I checked my list of Services to make sure COM+ Event System was not disabled and sure enough it's enabled and running.

I even checked the Startup and Recovery option in My Computer->Properties->Advanced to make sure that the Automatically Restart option under System Failure is not checked. All looks ok there, so I'm not sure what could be causing this random restart.

The laptop seems to have proper cooling as I can hear the fan spin from time to time. The computer is also free from viruses or spyware.

Is there any way to find out what's causing this restart? I wanted to view the MiniDump report since I saw that there is an option that writes to that file, but don't know where it's located or named after. It's at %systemroot%\MiniDump which I assume to be C:\Windows\MiniDump. I already enabled all hidden files and folders, including system related ones, but can't locate any file/folder that might resemble this.

I have never seen the exact error that your getting before but Ive done a bit of digging around for you and Ive come up with this page

It seems it could be something to do with the COM db being at fault.
Follow those instructions on how to remove and rebuild the COM db and hopefully you should be ok

%SYSTEMROOT% = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ it's the System root directory, not the Windows root directory.As for the problem in event viewer, this may not be the cause of the rebooting, unless you can verify the time the reboot happened and that this error occured not long before it rebooted.Since you said you've done a reinstall, problems are more than likely incompatible drivers, you need to insure that the drivers you're using are uptodate and correct for your laptop, sometimes you can only rely on the laptop's vendor's drivers because of changes they needed to make to get it working.I would also disable any non-signed drivers if possible until you can eliminate the actual problematic hardware, if any exists.If still no luck, look into heating issues and also the memory including graphics.Cheers,MC

I deleted the COM entries and let the Windows Components update and reinstall it back. I thought we're in the clear since it didn't seem to restart on me yesterday, but it just did about a hour ago.I opened up this laptop before and don't recall seeing any capacitors on it (or at least couldn't see any from the angle I opened up at). Is there any way to tell if the motherboard is failing? I see these kind of issues happen with memory and bad motherboards, but usually I will notice the bad capacitors (desktop machines that is ). I will run the memory test to see if that's causing the problem.It might be time for me to just build a new desktop instead. This laptop has served me well for 4+ years already and the screen is going bad on me already (separate issue...have been using external monitor for a few months now). If it's anything more than memory, the thing will be up on eBay LOL.Thank. Will let you guys know if it's the memory or not

In order to see if the mother board is faulty, I would rather boot on a Linux LiveCD and let it run a whole day to see if it continues rebooting.If it does not reboot while booted under Linux with the LiveCD, then this means that the motherboard is not faulty, then the problem is software.I also had this problem when bad events occured on the network, poorly formed client request killing wy wyndows server. This kind of events is still a software problem (the server PC crashing due to a client PC problem) and so, changing the motherboard would solve nothing.

I'll give the Linux boot CD a try. I do have an old version of Knoppix on CD somewhere ;)Just need to find something to keep me occupied while I leave this machine on...unless it can detect my wireless PC card?

Hi WeaponX,Have you tried the safe boot. Since if thats successful, it means there is a faulty driver. You need to identify and uninstall that driver from safe mode.If Safe boot also fails, there can be a genuine memory issue. Try to get the RAM checked.Also finally Win XP without SP2 is liable to get infected, which results in reboots. So, try to have that checked as well.best luck

Why ?
If it's a laptop, you can put it close to your router and connect through the Ethernet cable.
Because I'm pretty sur that the Ethernet adapter of the laptop will be detected, and you will be able to connect to the Internet using the DHCP on Ethernet, which is the default mode for most of the Knoppix versions and most of the routers. It worked for me everytime I tried it (it's precisely the usage for which knoppix has been designed for).
So, you may surf on the net all the time long.
If this first test is successful, you will be able to do a second test, verifying that you are able of safe surfing : the viruses and the spywares will not be able to spoil your Operating System disk because it's a read-only CD, so viruses and spywares will only be able to disturb themselves...

I doubt its viruses or the like.I had a friend who had this happen I think. It was something complex. Easiest way to fix problems like this is to reinstall Windows, if it continues then I'd say to investigate it while in Safe Mode.
If it was made by reinstalling windows then I guess the fix is there too Or even better get a desktop.

laptop restarting?Laptop Restarting On Its Own

hi all,

please help me fix this issue up.

I have a dell latitude d600 laptop. it is restarting on its own. As soon as I switch it on,it takes me to a page where it gives me 3 options.

start in safe mode

last known good configuration

start windows normally.

no matter what I click it again comes back to the same page. It keeps restarting on its own.

please suggest if its a problem with the mother board or do I need to format the system or is it time for me to dispose it off.
