Selective Startup Cause Windows XP To Require Reactivation using msconfig

Recommended Posts

Something rather odd happened and I wondered if anyone knows how I can avoid this happening again.I used msconfig to disable startup features and suddenly Windows says that excessive hardware change means that I am required to reactivate Windows XP. Well I don't want to go through that repeatedly or Micrsoft will think I am pirating their software.I am trying to figure out what is wrong with the copy of windows on this particular hard disk that has slowed to crawl and so I want to disable services that may be responsible, since avast and spybotS&D and adaware are not detecting anything.

From what I found on a website once your Windows OS is activated, the hardware that is installed at the time of the activation is hard coded into the rest of the system. So that means you change enough of the hardware on msconfig to warrant a reactivation, which means you have to reinstall it again.Who knows when you reinstall the OS you could fix the problem your having.

When you replace your motherboard (or a whole mix of hardware) windows will register the OS as being installed on another system. In your case, changes to motherboard.Give them a call and it'll be fixed, I've known other people on forums who did it this way. I believe customer support is a free number but I don't know which. That's a search for you :P What I'd do is make sure these are the settings you'd like to keep (boot), and then try calling. Have cd key and stuff ready.

I think it is 1-800-MICROSOFT. Anyways, their main hotline should direct you to the activation department. Don't worry. From what I have heard, the activation staff are usually understanding and will give you an over-ride key or something.
