ClarkConnect

Hey Guys!I was looking around for a replacement router for my linksys since she likes to disconnect whenever I get a phone call on my land line. Anyways, I also wanted better content filtering and website blocking (the one built into the Linksys firmware doesn't even work and you're restricted on the numbers and it's really dumb). Well, my next problem, was finding one that worked as a gateway too. My DSL is PPPoE, which requires authentication by my ISP's RADIUS server. That was always a problem. But then I found ClarkConnect!ClarkConnect is based off of Red Hat and it includes all sorts of cool goodies! The free version, Community Edition, limits some functions such as the number of email accounts you can have if you choose to also use your gateway as a mail server. It has a pretty good firewall and DHCP and the web based admin interface is something I've been dreaming that Linksys would have. It's the dream interface!The proxy is Squid, naturally, and the content filter is Dan's Guardian which is pretty good. I have the proxy setup as an invisible proxy so I don't have to change any settings and my parents won't notice (until they try to go after a blocked site!)If you're going to run it on a larger network, a better server is suggested. I'm currently running it on a PIII 900MHz computer with 512 MB of RAM. Also, if you're going to run in Gateway mode, two NICs are required! Since you don't know which one is going to go to your local network and which one faces the Internet, I left one NIC unplugged and then installed Clark. Then, once it was setup, I just plugged in my modem and reboot the modem and it connected no problem.I highly recommend! Now I can use my trouble causing router as a regular switch now [N]F

I've tried clarckconnect in the past (never with the intention the actualy put a sever in our network, since we don't need it), but I've never got it working right. The album page kept giving errors, the computer was visible, but I've never been able to make a connection with it under windows and a lot of other stuff that didn't worked to well .But I'm thinking about trying it again, just for fun , I've had a linux course at school, so I'm a bit more familiar with things now.

I didn't install any of the "useless" stuff... just the core things a gateway needs: proxy, content filter, DNS, etc. Besides clark eating up all the physical RAM and refusing to use the swap (nothing was used on swap.. by nothing I mean absolutely nothing, 0 KB) and content filtering really slowing down loading times, it wasn't too bad.
