Wire-less Power ?

Recommended Posts

US researchers have outlined a relatively simple system that could deliver power to devices such as laptop computers or MP3 players without wires. The concept exploits century-old physics and could work over distances of many metres.
They are planning to use resonance to instagate power wirelessly to other devices. Resonance is a phenomenon that causes an object to vibrate when energy of a certain frequency is applied. The concept is to use resonance of electromagnetic waves.

If you bring another resonant object with the same frequncy close enough to these tails then it turns out that the energy can tunnel from one object to another

said the researcher
Do you have anu thoughts on this ? this is definately a breakthrough concept. imagine all the devices in the room without wires to charge. wow!

This was my idea since I was like 5 years old, 'cuz I was like, why should we use wires, if we can find a way to power things wirelessly.'cuz of course, back then, I didn't know physics/chemistry to understand how electricity worked.xboxrulz

I'd love wireless power!! Then I could get rid of that bundle of power cables behind my monitors (I have dual monitors) and behind my desk! I use 1 full power strip (maybe 1 free outlet) for my computer alone (speakers, 2 monitors, power supply) and lets just say, I almost need a PVC pipe to organize all the cables, lol! Then on some other outlets, I'm actually out of room. My room consumes the most energy, that's for sure.[N]F

I would be worried by this resonance way of providing power..the great Tesla from Russia did a lot of experiments using sound waves and resonance to move things..he moved banks of fog form a valley with a huge soundsystem playing different frequencies to dissapate the fog...he also did experiments on goats and unfortunalty humans ;( (mainly prisoners or gypsys) on how to break down specific organs with different frequencies of sound..he basically mapped out the human body and what frequencies destroyed what..ever since the USA and the UK have denied working on such things but its accepted that the USA have sonic weapons! they have a riot control cannon apprantly that can hit the right frequncy to disable your sence of balance..yes you could knock down a crowd of protesters with one shot ;(So if you think about this and the scares weve had in the last few years to do with electic transmission cables possibly causing cancer in children and ofc the big debate over the frequencies and resonance of mobile phones..and now WIFI is also being looked at to see how it effects us long term...I think I would pass on any product that allowed wireless transmission of power for a long time till they worked out the damage to living things...imagine being hacked and someone changing the frequncies to make you sick!! this could be a possiblity if this is used...Not all things are a great leap forward....

I think Especially in consumer market the technology will not move forward if its harmful. The above mentioned research is being done in the usa and at reputed instutute like Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Offcourse we will have to wait until we are sure that it is not harmful before we use it. Instead of using acoustic vibrations, they are trying ot use the resonance of electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic radiation includes radio waves, infrared and X-rays. which might be harmless range of frequencies.

Wow, I've never thought of a wireless power but it would be really grounbreaking news. Without wires, things would really be much better. Can you link the page where you got the source from? I wanna read more about it because I don't quite understand the reasoning behind it.Wireless internet, now wireless power. wow, think of all the room you would gain if you lose all the annoying wires.

Well here's a wikipedia article on it, although it says at the top of page that some content may be invalid. It is still quite an interesting read on the background of wireless energy transmission, and if you have recently seen the movie, "The Prestige," you will understand some of the phenomenon that takes place:

I think this would be quite spectacular and life-changing. I was started to get excited after reading those first few posts, until I came across Mark420's. If the technology isn't safe enough to prevent people from using in a ways like that, I'd be really worried. Imagine someone shotting sound waves at you that could destroy your organs...thats scary!

I've heard about this. It will make charging cell phones utterly unnecessary. Batteries will not be necessary. Wireless laptops will be much more usable because you will not have to worry about short battery life. IPods will be much more usable because no cords are necessary, just change your preferences on your computer and the next time you walk by (or while you are sleeping) the IPod will be charged and updated. Bluetooth and wireless energy will be a lethal combination that will greately improve their use. I have been thinking about this idea for sometime, but haven't come up with a way that it would be possible. This is now possible!! I expect to see huge developments in this area over the next few years, starting with one city and moving to the next.

Unfortunately, as more things move to wireless technology via waves, the stronger all signals need to become. Wireless interference is growing at an exponential rate. Soon people will be moving back to wires (or on to new technology) because the problems posed by too much noise becomes too significant. There is another way to wirelessly transfer electricity though. Since all electricity produces an electro-magnetic field, and is caused by a change in electro magnetic field, you can cause an electro magnetic field created by some current to cause electricity to flow in a remote wire. The current problem is that, because the field falls apart with the cube of the distance (volume and all that), it takes an incredible amount of power. But as research is done in focusing electromagnetic fields, it becomes increasingly cheaper powerwise to do so.~Viz

yes, the more things becoming wireless, the more interference it will create. That's why I don't use wireless as much as possible. This is rule especially applies to my network connection like to my XBOX 360, 'cuz I hate really crappy connections.xboxrulz

I read this somewhere a long time, and really understood more about waves when i read some of Marconi's radio webe manusciptures. Now i know that his work is anicnet but one of the problesm that he used by using powerful transmitters was heart condition problems. Do we really watn to kill the old and young folk. Also, lets say we could use wireless energy, how would you encrpyt it. I would not want to my by neighbors usage charges. Back to the health topic. Its already quite bad that we live in a world of waves. Cell phones, and wireless connections are acctaully quite unhealthy and can cause braine damage. Imagine what power can do at high voltages.

First of all, encryption doesn't prevent people from obtaining data, just understanding it. Second of all, you can't encrypt energy, it would take more energy to encrypt energy than to transmit it in the clear, so really, you'd be providing even more energy to your neighbors. Thirdly, waves spread in, for the most part, spherical or cylindrical patterns, so you will lose the energy whether it goes to your neighbors or not. On the plus side, if everyone had this kind of device in there home, and the power companies used it, eventually the whole world would be powered with only a few paying, which means we would eventually need free or governement provided electricity.

True, ive been studying this in physics and have not really thought about that when i wrote it.
