I have just recently tried this, but with a different program. I'm using StyleXP, which is considered to be the best one for these things. I've changed the boot screen (now it says "Windows Pirated Edition" :D), the login screen (Biohazard image) and the main theme (Vista-like). Besides changing these major things, StyleXP also offers a few minor tune-ups.

However, I can see that the program you mentioned also tunes-up Windows in the sense of speed. Honestly, I don't use those tools, because they rarely help. They just clean the registry and perform some similar actions that do not affect the speed very much. The best way to speed up your computer is to buy new hardware ;)

This is quite increadable - I can just imagine the look on people's faces if I walk into a meeting boot up my laptop and it says "Windows Pirated Edition". I'd probably get myself arrested too. This though seems to be alike a pretty good tool to play around with the OS.

Most of my customization as of present is done through the regular desktop properties route.
Right click on desktop> Properties> Appearance tab

Throught this I have currently managed to alter my desktop windows settings in the following ways:
Active Window - Lialac; Inactive Window - Shades of Grey; Tool tips - yellow;

This method of changing the regular window's look and feel does not use up any extra memory - I'll have to use the various applications and figure out if they're utilizing any memory after they've made changes to the OS.

Good stuff though

Awww,I HATE shareware. This is merely a trial. So is StyleXP! I'm not bunching up these 'utilities' on my harddisk with only 3.01GB left out of 18GB! The way to fasten up your PC is to drop the load - delete unnecessary files and your PC will be a fast as new in no time! I'll do that when I get enough disks to store my files on...Good program though,~souradipm

StyleXP from TGTsoft is a great program, it can be used for loginscreens, icons and most importantly: visual themes.

A package of visual themes that I really like is the Vista Transformation Pack from neowin.net. I simply love the Royale Glass theme.

An example of it, although the one I'm using now is using a darker shade of blue

Check the package out :D Also includes a way to change login screens, transfer windows, into one of the vista themes without the need for an extra program like styleXP

oh god, I just hate those programms. All those programs that offer you more speed are nothing else but lies ... Tweaking might improve speed a litlle bit yeah, but the 5% gain isn't worth the money ... In fact, one program managed to slow my computer down so much I just decided to reinstall XP. If I can give one tip to everybody in the world ... don't install software you don't need and if you want to try some software, do it in a virtual machine. Defrag from time to time and you're off to go.And all those fancy looking themes and stuff ... 4 words; bey bey 5% . They eat resources and they are of no use. Bootscreens, 3 seconds and it's gone, logon screen, 3 seconds and it's gone (if I manage to enter the password correctly :D ), main theme, nice in the beginning but boring after a week or so.Nope, I simply prefer the W2K theme, small and fast (notice the small, yes, Luna is bigger in size)

Does this slow down your computer at all? Does anyone know of ones to avoid that are adware/spyware because I would be interested in trying skins for XP but I thought they were mostly buggy/spyware.

I currently use Windowblinds 5, and it actually speeds up system performance and UI drawing (Microsoft's Theme engine is very poorly designed, believe me). So not everything comes for eating system CPU and RAM.

I'd suggest Flyakite 3.0 for a quick Mac OS X emulation setup though still using Microsoft's theming engine.

Some other useful links to customization (some mainly to MacOS-like customs) are:
GUIStyles
Aqua-Soft
Interfacelift
Customize.org
Stardock

For years I've been skinning my system to look and/or work like a Mac, but always keeping an eye on system load. Currently WB5 is the best call, though it's shareware...
In these links you'll be able to find many and many useful (or eye-candy) programs and skins.

I don't know of any of these I'm suggest who come with spy or adware, since they're commonly developed by the modding community itself.

Any further questions, follow the links, or ask here and I'll try to help =)

I am using WindowBlinds5 and IconPackager and I don't really feel any speed differences, just a better appearance of my windows, besides there are so many nice skins made for it and icons too, but you can change a lot of things manually through windows preferences and deeper, you just need to know how, StyleXP or WindowBlinds doesn't do any magic, they work only on XP as I know, so you can do it to - I think so. :DFor the Speed, the main thing is the optimization and taking care of your OS! Using it for yourself and not the default.

I noticed a slowdown when i used stardock, though i had the full package and not just the windowblinds. Right now i use a great theme from http://www.crystalxp.net/, there's vista, Linux, and crystal(Mac) transformation packs. Along with a neat app called Rocketdock, from the same site, i get the cool Mac-style expanding dock, which i get envious comments for from people who think i'm running Tiger on my Acer machine. :P

RocketDock is smoother than Stardock's Objectdock, but up until now, it didn't have a save/load feature (what is TERRIBLE) and hadn't Docklets (dock utilities, let's say). Also I remember it eating up more RAM than ObjectDock. But, as a freeware community-based program it might eventually get much better than Stardock's program.

I have Window Blinds. I have my login screen saying "Social Security Database". I like it when people ask me questions like, "Do you REALLY have access to it?!" If they are a person I like, I tell them that it is just a fancy image. If I don't like them, I make them believe that I know as much as the government does about things. (LOL) It is really hilarious to see the look on their faces. It is true though, the login screen is only up for a little while on most machines. Mine is up whenever I am not using it. I hit Function + F6 on my laptop to send it to the login screen because when I am finished, you have to type a password to my account to do anything. The login screen actually does see many hours on my laptop. I am very paranoid about my roommate whom I do not trust with my stuff in the least. I also like the "fade out" thing I can do to the password box where you actually have to study the screen to see where the password box is. Once you find it though, it highlights itself. I love it! :-)
