Pregnant teenage waitress in Roanoke, Va. gets $1,000 tip from stranger

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A pregnant teenage waitress got an unexpectedly large tip when a sympathetic stranger left her $1,000 in cash, the Roanoke Times newspaper reported Friday.

After a lunch of burgers, fries and drinks with a bill of $26.35 US, the woman left Amanda Newkirk 10 $100 bills and a handwritten note reading "Keep the change! Have a great day." The 19-year-old thought it had to be a joke. But the manager at the Ruby Tuesday restaurant confirmed the authenticity of the bills with a counterfeit-detection pen, according to the newspaper.

Erin Dogan, a 28-year-old widow, later called Newkirk's general manager and said she had left the tip while at lunch with her fiance.

"It involved a lot more than good service at a great restaurant," Dogan told the Times. "I didn't need it. It helped someone who . . . needed it. God put us there together. God answered my questions."

Dogan, whose husband died last year, told the paper she loves to shop and could easily have spent the money at a nearby mall. But she decided to put it to better use.

"It made me feel phenomenal," Dogan said. "It has changed my life."

Newkirk plans to use some of the money to help pay for medical bills related to her pregnancy. But aside from a few national radio and television appearances, life continues as normal for the teen.

"I'm not going to retire with a thousand dollars," she said with a laugh.

I think that it was generous of that stranger to give her $1000 USD in tip.

Now, that's a really nice gesture. I mean, 1000$ may not be, as she said, enough to retire on, but it's not a small sum by any means. Especially when someone whom you've never met in your life gives it to you for no reason at all!

thats really great.wouldnt it be nice if those people, who there are atually quite alot of, that could easily afford to give money to people who 'need' it much more than them, did. the world would be a much nicer place.

If only Bill Gates was eatinh at her restaurant.I was watching a TV program about the worlds richest people.Bill Gates is only leaving 0.02 % of his fortune to his children after he dies, with the rest going to charity.0.02% is still more than anyone could spend in a life time, and the rest will be great for those in need..maybe if he went to her restaurant, he could have given her maybe 0.0005%..then she COULD have retired :oMicrosoft may be hartless when it comes to crushing the competiton, but where it really matters, starving kids, bills a saint.

Yea I've got to say Bill's doing the world right. He had planned to wait until he retired before starting any philantropy work, but changed his mind as is already making a big difference. Once he puts his money's full attention to charity it will be truly amazing. But about the actual article, that is amazing too. Whether or not losing the $1,000 affected the donator, at least she had the decenvy to do it. Alot of people with a crapload of money wouldn't think of ever giving it to a pregnant teen. By giving that money she helped out a mother and a future child alot. $1,000 when you have medical bills pouring in would help out alot. It's awesome knowing people like that are still around in the world.
